Actually, I think the remaining 7-8 GB are left for emulators for backwards compatability. The reason I think this, is because the hard drive on the Black Box was 8 gb... maybe this is it???
Why does my 360 HD only have 13 GB? I have deleted most of the videos and such, but I was only able to get to 13 GB. Any suggestions.
Hmmm this does sound logical. With all that, they might be using the space for updates also.
Most likely that the 7GB is the space on the original Xbox HDD that wasn't taken up by the OS and other files that weren't save space, mimic'd on the Xbox 360 HDD.
The original Xbox has a 8GB hard drive (might be bigger, though that's what it was in the original out of the box config), and I think about 1GB is used for cache files, the OS and other MS-related use.
I thought it was because the HDD was partitioned. The 7GB is for the emulator and other firmware type stuff and it is meant to be untouchable by the user (I'm sure someone will or already has hacked into it though). The other 13GB is for game demos, mp3s, XBLA and other crap downloadable through the dashboard... I could be totally wrong though...
Yeah, the original XB had 4.5GB chunk of space free, used for 3 caches. If I remember right C partition was about a gig, E was about 2.5 and F took 4.5(which doesn't exist on a real machine, that space would go between X,Y and Z, the cache drives).
The biggest problem is the FFXI beta which puts 5 more gigs of shit on the HD that I can't find any way to remove. They really should warn you about crap like that.

Ummm Yea you still need the FF11 Disc and you just choose uninstall and presto that 5 GB is free space again. I didn't know they needed and instruction manual just so people would know that.
Like they said before, someone else owns the other 7 gigs for mind control, shatting, spontaneous masturbation, updates, & anything else Bill Gates wants to use it for.
I think its for formatting and stuff. This was brought up when the 360 first came out but im not sure if microsoft commented on it.
