Why or how did you get an Xbox?

I got an xbox, because I received lots of gift cards for Best Buy on the Chistmas that the Xbox was 199.99 and came w/Sega GT 2002 combo pack plus Blinx for free, and plus my friends said it was an awesome system. I had planned on getting loads of PS2 games but the titles didn't look interesting and since I had surround sound and already 2 tvs (first this was just for one-gaming and one-satellite, now one doubles over for system link) I decided to go for an xbox and now it's my favorite system by far. Fable, plus other exclusive games, was pretty much the reason I got even remotely interested (I use to be a ps2 fanboy and told my xbox friends that all they had was halo). The overall effect is I sold my PS2 after a couple of months cuz it became a dust collector.
So basically I got it for the games.
Two of my friends got it for the system specs.
Another friend just got it as a gift.
I'm basically bored and was wondering how or why you got the mighty xbox.
Was it because of the games?
The power of it?
Other reasons?
I could have done a poll but there is just too many reasons so please post.

I got Xbox primarily because it seemed to be the platform Sega was focusing on the most. The DVD player was a plus (I didn't have one back then), and of course, all the games were key.

im gonna get flamed for saying this but i only got my x-box outta neccesity. i only wanted it because of a few very important exclusives. titles like panzer dragoon, toejam and earl and oddworld were what influenced me. i hate halo and that in no way influenced my decision, and "exclusives" like fable, well its being made by peter moneleux(?), a pc game god, so it will probably be ported to pc. many x-box games are either pc ports, or will be ported to pc. i only got it cause i needed to.

That's cool SneakyPenguin, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I admit that I absolutely hated GTA 3 on my ps2 when that's what everyone was talking about and some are still talking about. Another reason I got xbox and you made me realize this is for some of the hit pc titles that were/are ported over cuz for some reason I can't stand playing PC games (except C&C, Starcraft, and the Vampire: Masquerade). I prefer my comfy bed or a couch and not having to sit so close.

Had a couple of PS2s go out with disk read errors and decided I'd had enough. Probably just bad luck on my part, but decided I'd switch to the XBOX.

Why?

Games such as Halo and. . .um. . .games released later I guess.

It also serves as my DVD player.

I don't regret getting the XBox at all. Even though for a while there wasn't too much out besides Halo that interested me it is now more than worth the purchase.

The Reason:Halo
The circumstances:My birthday
How i got an xbox:I got some gift money, and i went up to EB to see what kind of a deal i could get. They had a $10 credit for every dvd special that day, so i ended up running home and grabbing 30 dvd's and some of my old games, i walked out with an xbox, 2 controllers, Warcraft 3 Collector's Edition($30, then retailing for $70) and about $70 credit. That was a pretty good birthday weekend as i probably spent an average of $5 used per dvd.

i got it for alot of reasons, one is because i had lots of money and i just got DSL over the christmas week off. another is the games. i never had halo but i loved playing it at my fraiends, i never got GTA: VC because i never felt like shelling out 50 bucks for pretty much an expansion pack of GTA 3. and there are alot of exclusive games coming out like Ninja Gaiden, halo 2, halflife 2, doom 3, and DOA online. also i need a good DVD player for my room cuz PS2 sucks at playing DVDs.

I got it because of KOTOR but now I regret it. I don't regret buying my XBOX because I love it but because I didn't like KOTOR

I was unsure about getting the X-Box. The only games I really wanted was Panzer Dragoon Orta, KOTOR and Ninja Gaiden. But then EB had the 4 Games plus a $30 rebate so I just bought it. That was the end of last year, now I have like 12 games for it and Ive barely touched my PS2 or GameCube since I got the Box.

I got my XBox since I had some graduation money to spend, and wanted Halo, PDO, plus it had (in my opinion) the best performance for multiplatform games. I also planned on (and will eventually) getting XBL. Oh, and being able to have your own soundtracks on games kicks a lot of ass.

I'm with paean on this one.

I read about Steel Battalion and placed a pre-order for it at EB the next day. When SB finally arrived, I bought the Xbox & SB together.

ever since then it's been all uphill/downhill (depending on whether or not you consider gaming an addiction).

I got mine after the E3 price drop in 2002, but now I regret it. I never play it and just end up waiting for the newest games to come out. I had live but thought it sucked.

The only reason I am holding onto my Xbox is the SNK and SAMMY fighting games that are coming out with live play

I used to bad mouth Xbox during its first two years because it wasn't a good system. But it gradually got better, and right now I'd say its the best overall system (although it really is best to have all three). But a couple reasons contributed, in no particular order:
1) No more PS2 caliber jaggies
2) Surround sound is one of the coolest things to happen in video games
3) www.xbconnect.com
4) Introduction of the Controller S (I probably wouldn't have gotten Xbox if they were still using that stupid big controller)
But most importantly, the games just got better. MS didn't release as many terrible games like Bruce Lee and now they have a healthy supply of first party games.

I got it for Halo, and getting Xbox was just a damned good decision. I really enjoy it.

I got mine mainly for KOTOR, morrowind, and to see what the big deal was about halo. I loved KOTOR but Halo was a disappointment and I'm starting to think Morrowind is gonna be a chore just to play because it's soooooo slow. I don't regret getting it though. I got it under shady practices (I got games with the EA stackable coupons then got GC at walmart with them), so I only payed $68 for it... oh well, I'm happy with it at that price!

I got mine because I had a couple hundred dollars and of all the things I could think to spend it on, my mind came back to the Xbox. So I got it a month before Christmas last year, a bunch of games. I played the hell out of it, PGR2, Top Spin, RBS3. But now, the only thing I do is power up my Xbox to see if any friends are on Live. If not, I power up the PS2 and get my gaming on. I'd say right now its about 70/30 PS2/Xbox. But I really like my Xbox, and Live has some good and bad features when comparing to PS2 online. I think the Xbox is more capable but the PS2 has the games that I play, and that makes all the difference to me.

I got mine because I have a friend who works at M$ who gets games at something below cost and who is willing to loan them to me. Plus I was playing at his house all the time and it's so damn pretty. I love my PS2 but the X-Box has a lot of nice features. I try to stay away from M$ in general but it would be silly to deny that they've put together a really nice console.

I got mine because I had been wanting to get a system for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. I really wanted to be able to play GTA and when that came to Xbox that eliminated the biggest con I had with it. I still struggled with maybe getting as PS2 as it has more good cheap games to choose from (and several exclusives I would like to play, like FFX, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, probably some others) but in the end the X won out for a few reasons.

1)It's the most powerful console. The geek in me had trouble justifying spending more money for an inferior (tech wise) system.

Going hand in hand with #1

2)Hard Drive. I hate memory cards. Deciding which old save game to delete always agonized me (Even though I knew I would probably never go back to it.) Plus having custom sound tracks is awesome.

3)Surround Sound. I finally have a surround sound set up and love that the Xbox takes advantage of it.

4)Most cross platform games look best on Xbox

And perhaps the biggest one

5)My buddy got an Xbox for Christmas so now we can system link.

To top it off I had finally made up my mind to get one when Best Buy sent out that 10% consolation on cancelled $5 PH orders so I used it to order from BB.com the first day it was good. And they just happened to be running an Xbox bundle with the usual Tetris/Star Wars plus Fuzion Frenzy and GTA Double Pack for $200. Sweet the one game I really wanted was bundled! And it turns out I've gotten a lot of play out of Fuzion Frenzy as well. I would have never ever bought that game, but turns out it's a lot of fun for a group.

So there you have it. I would still like to get a PS2 at some point, but that'll probably be a long time from now when they are good and cheap.

Slightly off topic, but
Addressing the fact that "Xbox only has Halo". My biggest gripe with PS2 is that it has no multiplayer games of its own. I'd rather have 1 good game rather than 200 crappy games.
If you know of any multiplayer PS2 game, let me know.

I'm not sure if you mean online or not, but if you do, then I'd suggest:
SOCOM II
SOCOM I
Tribes:aerial Assault
Tons of soprts games

Non-online:
Lots of racing games
TimeSplitters 2
Tribes
every sports game.
Baldur's Gate

This is not even the beginning of the list. Do you mean mulitplayer like 2 people or like 4 or like 16 (Tribes is the only game out where you can play with 31 other people!) If you are saying 4 people on the same PS2, I understand your gripe (need multi-tap and a game) because yes they are less abundant than XBox, but if you are online, then I think you really need to do some research because PS2 has more online titles than XBOX.

I'm just trying to help you out, you asked for multi-player titles.....

Back in '01, I was already going to get a DVD player and figured it was worth it to spend another $100 on a kick ass game system. That left Xbox or PS2. Then I looked at the specs and games list of both systems. Xbox won me over with exclusives such as Halo, Rallisport, and Orta. Plus, multiplatform titles were rated the best on Xbox. The fact that you don't have to buy a memory card and can rip your own music when playing a game appealed to me as well.

I got mine at Best Buy a couple of days after launch. They were impossible to find (in my area at least) and as I was pulling into the Best Buy parking lot I saw a guy carrying an Xbox into Best Buy....so I RAN in behind him and followed him to the returns counter and found out he was returning it because it was a duplicate buy. (Him and his wife both had bought one for their son) So I bought it from the returns counter right on the spot.......I love my 'box. :D

I got an XBox because my PS2 broke, and I didn't want to get another PS2 since I already had most of the great games for that system.

I had a preorder on mine a few months before it came out due to the fact that it was all sparkly and new in the eye's of everyone at the time. I still own it, all the faults I have seen about it I consider to have a certain truth to them but I don't mind it ( I never did have a problem with the controller though). Halo definately has been played on my box more than any other game easily.

i got my xbox, because i wanted to have ps2, xbox and a gamecube. Since each system has its own "exclusive" game.

I bought mine used a little over 1year ago.

I got the xbox for it's raw power, built in hard drive (no memory sticks for me), and overall capabilities.

I've been happy with my desision ever since.

I love my box.

I bought my Xbox because it is technologically more advanced than any other console on the market. Xbox Live, custom soundtracks, built in hard drive, DVD, surround sound... oh yeah and Halo.

Did I mention I bought it for $300 in February 2002? Yeah, I think the price dropped to $200 merely two months afterward.

The main downside to this is the hard drive might be 2 gigs smaller (I think) and I have one of those damned Thomson drives that crashes the game very now and then, and gives you that stupid dirty disc problem. WTF Microsoft? Couldn't you just use a Samsung drive for ALL your Xbox models?

Now I'm going to end up buying a new one and throwing my old shitty one on eBay or something... what a hassle. Still, worth every moment of my time playing it.

The game that finally broke me down and forced me to buy an Xbox was Panzer Dragoon Orta. I needed that game bad.

Turns out it was one of the best investments I ever made. In less than a year after that initial purchase, my Xbox library ballooned to about 17 games.
I'm starting to think Morrowind is gonna be a chore just to play because it's soooooo slow.
Morrowind Xbox is buggy, slow, and it crashes. The GOTY version fixes some of the bugs but it is still slow as fuck. Get the PC version. It takes no more than five seconds to load a game, instead of five minutes on the Xbox.

Got it last year in preparation for Conkers Bad Fur Day.....still waiting.

It gets a ton of use for dvds, and I have got some deals and fun games since....Plus, for 150$, it came with 3 games jsrf/sega gt, and oddworld. And Badlurs gate was on sale at Bestbuy for 5$ that day too.

It is because of CAG that I got my 'Box. Best Buy had that sale with Fuzion Frenzy, Star Wars/Tetris, GTA Double Pack for $180 the same week that my aunt paid me $300 to fix her computer (which was the most frustrating experience ever but thats another story). I was planning ot get one of those DreamX overclocked Xboxes but I wisely held off until they had reviews out.
So I caved in and dropped the money. I drove 2 hours to get my XBox because they ran out of stock in the Best Buy by my apartment. All they had was Fuzion Frenzy, and of course, when I got there they told me they didn't have that either. I went home straight and picked up the other games and the XBox (did I mention I had got in that CC sale so I had some other games besides that before I even had the console, thats how excited I was). I didn't enjoy the experience fully because I was missing Fuzion Frenzy but I was able to pick that up the next day. Long story short, I had my XBox and I still can't believe it to this day.

But I'm still tempted to send it in and get one of those DreamX dealies cuz they have a trade-in offer...
