Why the hell are HDTV's so damn expsensive?! *sigh*

Don't worry about it too much OP. Get one when you can afford it. For now, just go over to your friends' house and enjoy the lovely HD that they payed for.

I was actually going to buy an HDTV, until my notebook started to crap out on me. So I had to spend my HDTV money on a new computer. That's life I suppose. So I'll continue to do my gaming on my 32" Sansui tube.
Get a Vizio 42" Plasma 720p, only $698, I have one and stand behind it, its a Great affordible brand
I bought one last summer (probably an older model that what was out now). Picture was decent, but it made a loud buzzing when bright colors were on the screen. Had a vizio tech come look at it and he couldn't fix it and said that model tended to do that.

So I returned it, payed $200 more and got the 50" Sony LCD RPTV and haven't been happier. No problems, and the extra 10" is a huge difference.

If the new models don't buzz, then it's a good set for the price. When the tech took it apart I noticed that the screen and other parts had LG logos on them.

Personally, I probably won't take a chance on a budget brand again--unless it's just for the bedroom.

The model I have was released in September, because they clearenced out the older model, this model does not buzz at all, Im very happy

I have noticed that HDTV prices have dropped significantly since the beginning of 2008. These days, a 32-inch HDTV can be found for around the 500 dollar mark (which is cheap to me).

I got an LG 37" for $700 a little more than a month ago. Probably more than I should've paid, sure, but it was on sale, and we already had one LG that we loved, so I knew I'd be happy with it.

And I am. It's fantastic. I love it.

I have a 32" LCD that I got last year and I am interested in getting a DLP just like others have mentioned. Is there a general consensus as to which are great for the price?

I purchased a 42" Panasonic Plasma 720p HDTV for $520 a month or two ago.

I love it.

As far as DLP goes... I could just have a bad experience, but I would not recommend getting a DLP TV. My grandma has a 64" Mitsubishi DLP TV and I think it looks considerably worse than her other 32" Samsung LCD, or my Panny Plasma.

This could just be a crappy model, or brand though.
They're not that expensive if you're an adult and have a decent job, and as people have mentioned prices have been dropping pretty quickly.

I got a 50" Sony LCD RPTV for $999.99 last summer, and I've seen a lot of good deals this fall. I could never go back to anything under 50"

My History is Sony 27" Wega back in 1999 or 2000 for $599.99 and then this 50" set for $999.99.

If you're a high school kid or something it's a lot of money. But still if you can find a part time job you have no rent, utility bills etc. to pay since you live at home so you can save up the money pretty quickly even on a low paying job.
Im 23 years old, almost 24, but live in Michigan, Unemployment is at the highest in the entire nation at 9.6 percent.
I have a 56" Sammy 1080p DLP. I love it. Excellent color/picture with no problems in the last 2 years I have owned it.
Seconded. The 56" Samsung DLP that I have has the best image quality of any TV I looked at. For $1,100 for 56" I couldn't have gotten anything better.

Looks 100x better than my parent's 42" Sony Bravia LCD.

Like I said, it's all relative. If you're unemployed and/or just don't have a stable job then you obviously can't drop a lot of money on luxury items like TVs until your situation improves.

Doesn't mean HDTVs are too expensive, just that they're a luxury item and people who have to worry about making ends meet shouldn't be throwing away money on luxury items.

I don't even think that that is a valid excuse. I bought my 56", 80GB PS3, HD-DVD player, along with some other expensive stuff (like a few thosand dollars engagement ring) when I either had a part time job or was a graduate intern and still in school getting my Masters degree (plus I have $15,000 saved up in the bank.) If you want nice things, all you have to do is be smart with your money.

HD TVs are inexpensive, you just have to save up a little cash so you can afford it.
