Why Won't Developers Give Me What I Wanted?

CAGiversary!
Yeah, I'm selfish, and I think the gaming industry should cater to my own desires because I have a feeling that other people want this as well:

1. More DLC maps for BF 1943 - Basically at PAX, they said there will never be DLC for this game. Why the fuck not??? We get tons of DLC for everythign else, but not the one popular game that screams for new maps.

2. Half-Life Ep. 3 - cmon Valve, take a break from LFD and Portal and give us what we freaking want!!

3. More Mass Effect Please - Game has been out 2 months, where is a good meaty DLC? Fallout 3 had tons of DLC in less than a year.

4. Final Fantasy VII remake - good grief, millions want this ,why are the developers been buttheads and refusing to give this to us?

5. Bring back turn based strategy - why did this great genre have to die out? I still mourn the death of 3DO. With the excitement already brewing for Civ 5, it is a genre that has huge fun potential. Instead we get more FPS.

6. More Choose Your Own Adventures games - cmon devs, thsi is what makes games super fun. Games where your decisions affect the outcome and ending. Mass Effect and Heavy Rain accomplished this somewhat, but it could be exploited to so much more amazing experience. Read the books to get and idea of this potential.

7. Half Life 1 remake - Valve gave us a horrible tease when claiming to have remake the original with the Source engine. It still looked like cra. Give us the original with modern graphics and we'll love ya even more, Valve!

I, too, want things that don't make economic sense for the developers!

Well, okay, except Episode 3 and the FFVII remake. That... that probably makes sense. But they'd just fuck up FFVII, anyway.

I would think DLC for BF1943 makes great economical sense. The game was a huge success and people would eagerly pay up for a new map pack even if it was over priced.

As for choose your own adventure games, I think the last real game I played that was exactly like one was True Crime: Streets of LA. It pretty much had every single trapping of an adventure book. I think it's a cool idea, but I really would get annoyed trying to get all the endings.

I don't think turn based strategy games really died out.. I think they still come out pretty often, they're just not AAA titles.

Ehhhhhh I'm just gonna pick one answer and force fit it onto all the questions. That answer?

HD Towns

Because Developers have to sell their souls to publishers to get financing.

Publishers are publically traded companies whose only interest is in increasing shareholder revenue.

They do this by making as much money as possible.

They do that by charging as much as they can for everything.

So instead of getting what you want, you get overpriced DLC, DLC already on disc, microtransactions, etc.

A fundamental part of modern game design is where developers sit down with publishers and decide which of their game ideas can be removed from the retail release and sold separately later.

Don't blame developers, they need money to develop, and that money comes with strings attached.

Developers are in the business of making great games.

Publishers are in the business of making money.

I doubt it does. Especially when the full game that everyone who bought BF1943 waited for has been out for nearly a month now. Besides, I would rather have DICE work on new maps for BC2 than new maps for BF1943.

Also, the first ME2 DLC comes out next Friday.

Um. Mass Effect 2 has had a bunch of weapons, a character+missions, and a vehicle+missions all for free, and a new character with more shit coming soon. I'm pretty sure Fallout didn't have, like, any DLC 2 months after release, and if it did it was the 30-minute Anchorage stuff.

So, given the title, these are things you wanted in the past, and thus, no longer want? I'd say the situation is win-win for all involved.

The why is BF 1942 still popular online? Many people enjoy playing in the WW2 theatre and sick of the modern crap. I had a blast with the BF1942 European maps. Storming the beach of Normandy. Sniping the helmets off Nazis. Good stuff.

I still want a game like Mercenaries 2(without all the glitches), but with the vehicle choices of GTA San Andreas where I could equip my merc with a parachute and land a jetliner on top of one of the rival factions bases and nuke it off the face of the in-game world.;)

But I imagine if a company ever made a game like that, there would be cries of 'terrorist simulator' and people suing everyone else over it and it wouldn't last a week on the market.

Then again, I also want a WWII shooter/strategy game where you can play as the Axis powers. Same deal with that though, I imagine.

EA laughs at your plight.

It took Bethesda 2 months to get it out the door, with an extra month to actually fix it.

4. Final Fantasy VII remake - good grief, millions want this ,why are the developers been buttheads and refusing to give this to us?
Square can't do HD towns. Didn't you know?

5. Bring back turn based strategy - why did this great genre have to die out? I still mourn the death of 3DO. With the excitement already brewing for Civ 5, it is a genre that has huge fun potential. Instead we get more FPS.
Valkyria Chronicles. NOW

You will like what devs tell you to like. That's their thinking.

That Black Mesa thing is supposed to be out soon. Don't know what it is though because I'm not that big on Half Life.
