Wii composite/component comparison

Here we have a detail of Legend of Zelda's title screen. Note first the fact that the top line of smaller text is much crisper and stand out more clearly from the background. Note also that the colors are more defined -- check out the white accents on the E and L.

But finally, look at the intricate design that peeks out from between the E and L. With composite video, all the little lines blur together into one indistinct blob. But with component video cables, each little line is individually defined.

Nintendo promises that component cables will be available at Best Buy, Gamestop, and other B&M retailers at Wii launch. If you can't find them, my advice is: bitch. Bitch loud and bitch long. It worked for me, it can work for you.

Oh, and please remember once you get the cables to go into your Wii settings menu and set the screen resolution to 480p. Or you'll get nothing out of your purchase.

not the best comparison I know, but its something at least

Those screenshots are so shitty it's hard to tell any difference at all. You can't tell this stuff from screenshots or online video anyway, you need to see it in person. Component will look better, and that's what I am going with.

Yeah, take a photograph of a screen is hardly the best way to judge this, especially at slightly different distances from the screen.

Component will be better, but I'm not sure this proves it to me at all. :)

The comparison is appreciated, but this is the reason I'm not ready to splurge on HDTV and component cables simply because of my gaming habits.

The day will come when I pony up, but for right now it seems to me that too many of the benefits of spending all that money are things that only videophiles can appreciate. I've seen lots of games all whored up for HD at the stores, but it's still not a big enough draw to suck me into that kind of expense.

I'm going to get a component cable when I can, but I can still live with composite. Then again, I need glasses for distance and rarely wear them while gaming/watching TV

I'd get Component Cables, but my television doesn't support progressive scan. So it'd probably be a waste of money getting them.

I do hate having to go back to Composite though, I've been using S-Video for my GC for a while now. Can you use the same S-Video cables for the Wii?

Then use svideo for the wii.

Thank you for answering my question. I didn't think we could use any Gamecube cables with the Wii. I guess it's just Component Cables, eh?

you might as well get the component even if you dont have progressive, it will still give u a nice picture and you will prob eventually get a better tv, so u wont have to buy another set of cables

I ment I would think nintendo or 3rd party would come out with a svideo cable.

Nope, the video jacks are different.

Even if you can't do progressive scan, but have component inputs, the colors will be better with component vs. Composite or Svideo. I'd get them, especially being that you're used to Svideo. It may not overall look a ton better than Svideo on your TV, but you wouldn't want to take a step back, either.

Oh, thank God -- the cables will be available at launch... I saw that Gamestop had 12/15 listed as the release date and I was pissed because we'd be left with a system that essentially looks like shit for an entire month. Launch is less than a week away and I can't fuckin' wait.

That comparison is horrible... if you're gonna do a detail comparison, give us a high resolution picture at least.

It doesn't make any sense to say that based on this comparison, since the Wii doesn't even support true HD. We're just talking about the difference that progressive scan makes, and it's relatively subtle. The different between HD and SD on something like the Xbox 360 is like night and day.
