I am tired of playing my Wii on an old 27in SDTV(though it does have component ports, it doesn't have 480p). Is there any deals on anything to plug it into a monitor(another CRT, but at least i'll support 480p), or should i just buy a new tv alltogether, even though the family is reluctant in spending $699-$1500 on a brand name tv(they don't trust non-names), when the current tv works "fine" for them. Please help.

Get another job and get your own damn TV?

Bottom line is, its not going to make much of a difference on Wii...and how does the TV have component support but not 480p enabled? That confuses me, what is the model id?
DO NOT GET A HDTV FOR THE WII! I can attest that in my experience it looks way worse then it does on SDTV.
what the hell? i have a wii on a 720p display and it looks way better than on a crt tv.......make sure you enable progressive scan and have component cables

It make look bigger but I doubt it looks better. I have a 46" Sony 1080p and the bigger and more lines of resolution the more flaws you see IMO. If my 1080p 46" was the same size as my old 480i 27" CRT (not that such a thing exists) I would play wii on the CRT hands down. Now 360, Blu-ray, PS3, and HD-DVD's are all another matter entirely :)

Wii Sports looks like shit on my HDTV. I wasn't sure if the lanes were jaggy, or if I was bowling up stairs.

Yeah, but you're talking about Wii Sports, here. The graphics aren't the draw on that game by any means. Try something like Metroid Prime 3 - that for sure looks better on an HDTV.

Firstly Wii is not HD, it's 480p (ED). Secondly you can get a brand name HDTV for much less than $699. Thirdly while an SDTV CRT is worse, CRTs can be excellent; there is nothing wrong with CRT HDTVs or CRT computer monitors.

If you just want to plug it into a computer monitor (which I highly recommend) a VD-W2 is the best bet if you only want to use it with the Wii.

If there are any other systems you'd like to hook up to a computer monitor you should get a component-to-vga transcoder like a X2VGA2 or a XCM VGA box.

That should display 480p right, but is it big enough. Plus, even though i have a 20in Widescreen at home, i can't use it because they play computer games on it all the time.

oh, only found one, but thanks. Do you know anywhere else i can find cheap/free monitors?

I have to disagree, I played MP 3 on a 34 inch SDTV and it looked great. Then I tried playing it on a friends 64 inch 1080p TV and it looked horrible, I had to quit playing because everything was small and jaggy.

was it on component cables? try playing a PS3 on a 60in tv with composite cables.

Nearly all, if not all, new SDTV's with digital tuners have a component input. If you pick up digital signals, you'll find that some stations have a SDTV digital signal as well as a HDTV digital signal. That SDTV signal is 480i. The new SDTV's are made to meet the Feb, 2008 requirement. Not all digital signals are HD.

Yeah.... I'm gonna call bullshit on that one. I had my Wii when I had a Panasonic CX36HT Tau CRT TV. We all know the component cables didn't come out till afterwards. It will look like shit if you're playing with just composite cables. The PS3 and Xbox 360 also look like hairy ass when using composite. It doesn't matter the TV IMO. It's what connection you're using.

It's all about native resolution. The Wii's native is 480i to 480p. The optimal video will be 480p, because it is progressive. Therefore if you get a monitor that can either change its native resolution on the fly (aka a tube monitor) then it will look better than an LCD thats native is 720P or higher (because it has to stretch the 480 image to meet its pixel count). You connection is obviousley important because you cannot run 480p on composite cables and because component gives you the most color differeniation as well as supporting crisper/higher resolution images. Bottom line, get a tube or an lcd with a native of 480p (640 by 480). The latter is very rare, maybe a 15 incl lcd tv perhaps. I would personally reccomend the Samsung 27 inch CRT that you can find around bestbuy (forgot the exact model name). It can be snagged for 450 or less and can change its native from 480i all the way to 720p /1080i . So it covers all your bases for hi def and standard def consoles, all the while making them all look stupendous. ;)

Metroid Prime 3 looks *decent* on my 42" HP 720p Plasma with component cables and widescreen/480p settings. All of the other games I've played look horrible. All of them don't even support widescreen, and that makes them looks extra horrible. I would no doubt play all of my Wii games EXCEPT Metroid Prime 3 on a standard SDTV. Metroid Prime 3 is the only Wii game I've played that doesn't burn my eyes on my HDTV. Buying an HDTV just for your Wii is a horrible descision, but if you ever plan on buying a 360 or other HD device, then things change. I love my 360 on my HDTV.
