Wii is a massive prank perpertrated by Reggie the Prankmastah

IGN Wii: Some fans have already started petitions in hopes of somehow convincing Nintendo to change the name. Any message for these people?

Perrin Kaplan: Live with it, sleep with it, eat with it, move along with it and hopefully they'll arrive at the same place.

Because there is a damn good chance this is a joke.
Okay, so like, two random people in the branding industry expressed their totally baseless and unfounded (there is no upholding evidence whatsoever behind their theories) theory that the "Wii" name is a joke just to stir people up, and this idea somehow magically has enough credence and credibility to render their being "good chance" that it is, indeed, some sort of bizarre and pointless joke that would do little other than confuse the masses in the long run?

Wii is the final name. Deal with it.
No there's not. Deal with it.
Care to explain why? The fact that there is no trademark for "Wii", the fact that there is still a revolution.nintendo.com, but no wii.nintendo.com, and the fact that nintendowii.com was only registered yesterday and only held for 2 years while the main site is for about 10 would say that there is a chance that this is a joke.

Not to mention that nintendo representatives have answered "I don't know." when asked about the trademark. If there was a reason, I think they would fucking know.

Now I wonder why this trademark never worked?

Care to explain why not? I edited my post. Here, I'll save you the trouble of scrolling up:

Also, check the Kotaku post, it's been updated.
Update: This just in from Nintendo on the subject of the missing Wii trademark: “Nintendo has filed many trademark applications for Wii. Trademark Web sites often take time to update, and you can expect the Wii trademarks to appear shortly.”
There is no credence to this "Wii is a joke" thing. There's a lot more evidence to the contrary, I would think. Sure, it's possible that it's a joke, but it's hardly a "damn good chance."

Let this be a joke and I'll fully accept my ownage. I'll also enjoy watching all the Wii lemmings rescind their love and support.:)

yeah.. try http://www.nintendowii.com

Its real guys, deal with it.

edit: hrm.. that directed me to nintendo's homepage an hour ago.. maybe they're doing some server moves

Everyone thought NOA played a joke last year at E3, what with all the strange videos, supposed viral marketing, etc.

After 48 gruesomely agonizing hours, the dust cleared, and nothing had changed.

It's real, folks. It's called the goddamn Wii.

Seconded. It's pretty simple. Love it or hate it, it's the next Nintendo console.

I hope it's Wii. I don't like the name, but I'm still getting the system, and this just goes to show who the real gaming fans are. My buddy who is a Nintendo fanboy actually renounced his Nintendo faith yesterday because of this. That's sad when a name of a console stops you from buying it.

I think there was a pretty good chance that he was not a Nintendo fanboy if the console name was his deciding factor.

Indeed. He must have been very weak and flimsy in his Nintendo fandom, to let something like that cause him to "renounce" his love for the company.

I heard a ruomor that they will change the name to Miamoto's Wii.
So how many people out there are looking forward to playing with Miamoto's Wii this year?

And the millions of teenages that thought Nintendo was finally growing up that will never buy a console called Wii. Nintendo isn't thinknig about the fact PS3 fans want the "cool" system, even if it's shit, just look at the PS2.

The name sells, and this name will not.

We are all hoping it's fake because it is the worst fucking name in gaming history.

Elvis is dead.
Andy Kaufman is dead.
Jim Morrison is dead.
Paul was (not) dead.

And the Revolution is now the Wii.

Accept it, people.
Elvis is NOT dead you asshole! I JUST SAW HIM IN A COMMERCIAL!

EXPLAIN THAT! HA!
Jubzilla you can't even work iTunes, so I wouldn't expect you to know what's what.

:)
I'm with Coffee Edge on this one... I'm still amazed how pissed people get for a company naming their kid/system what they want.
What if it was called the Nintendo 12-inch Fuschia Gleaming Schlong? Not all names are good. I agree with you, in principle, but still, was the "Wii" name market tested? It'd be better if it was called the "Double-you-2". It would make no sense, but still.

I agree on the prank thing. Come E3 I'll believe it if it's still being touted. Also, It's not so much I hate it; I do hate it. But it's not a name. And when I first saw it I was like Why. And then when someone said We I was like "Wheeeeee!" Very strange stuff. With all the PR it's gotten and the talk of them not having the logo copyrighted I think it's obvious. Not everyone is as willing as me to go into a store and say I'd like a "wheeeeee!"

No dude. Didn't you ever see the end of Bubba Ho-tep?

How exactly is the PS2 shit? Are you so severely brain damaged that you think your opinion is the standard to which all consoles are held? Do you mean you don't like PS2?

Anyone who's played all three systems has got to agree that the load times and graphics on the ps2 can be really sub par at times when compared to the other systems. Not all the time but enough with certain games that you got to understand where some people get there opinions.

For starters, they wouldn't be accused of pandering to children anymore.

Thats like blaming the frying pan for burning your breakfast. A lot of issues come from developers trying to code for all three systems at once. There are games on the PS2 with very short load times because devs took the time to code properly.

Gamers and people in general making unreasonable assumptions and opinions. *gasp* thats outrageous. C'mon man. Saying that reminds me of that Captain Obvious commerical.

It is Wii. Which sucks, sucks mucho grande.

The games and hardware will be still be fantastic. The experience marvelous.

Yes, it's called Wii. But I was never getting it to stare at the name and logo. I'm getting it to play games. People will be talking about it with this type of name, I think that's exactly what Nintendo wants.

Except the name will hurt the games too, and that;s why I'm pissed. The name will stop regular people and Sony fucking freaks from buying the system. The name isn't something "cool" and the fuckers won't buy one.

Less people buy the console, less games are made. So instead of getting one around launch, I'm waiting at least a year and see if the worst name in gaming histoy has an affect on games.

What, are you some kind of Stiffly Stifferson? Because I hate Stiffly Stiffersons. I wanna prank them for hours.. in my basement.

It might affect sales, but it might not. If the initial games are good enough, it'll sell because when people hear about the shitty name they'll probably go try it. And if it's so amazing, then they'll end up getting it regardless of the bad name.

So maybe it could work out. I'm cautiously optimistic. Of course, it could easily fall flat on its face because the name is that damned bad. Not just weird or stupid. It's ridiculous, sounds like something some African tribesman would say outside of the obvious "piss" and "pissing" and "penis".
