CAGiversary!
This is a story about Mii Wii.
After work today, I took my Wii over to my friend's house to try it out at around 6pm. I only brought a 2nd controller and Excite Truck, plus Wii Sports. The events that would follow can only be described as "epic." I roll up to the house, and my friend and I start making some Miis (avatars) and then begin gaming with a round of Tennis. After being totally surprised at how the Wii plays and how responsive it was, we went through every game in the list, save boxing. While we were in a heated game of bowling, one of my other friends walks in and is instantly captivated by what he is seeing. At first, he was in a state of disbelief seeing us actually bowl with amazing accuracy, just like we would at a real alley. In fact, that state of disbelief is what almost every person that saw the Wii today had when they first saw it. So naturally he also wants to create a Mii, and then we begin playing some more Bowling. Eventually, 2 more people that live in the house wander in and now it's on. Everybody is getting used to the Wii's controls and movement relative to the sensor bar, and laughing and shouting and having a great time. I go get some food with my friends, come back, and my friend's girlfriend is playing it with some other girls that live in her house, creating characters and bowling. Girls have this strange attraction to the Wii, almost like a mouse sniffing out a dead deer. At first, they are disgusted, then after staring at it for a little bit, move closer to inspect it, and pretty soon are feasting on it. After eating, we had a pretty incredible session of Excite Truck and Sports, and before we know it it's already 10pm. Then the real fun begins.
A few friends who live down the street come over with beers after hearing the Wii was over here and we have a big Sports fest, playing Bowling, Baseball (which gets INTENSE), and Tennis, also intense. Everybody seems to learn the controls very quickly, and after a few tries are getting much better at playing. More calls are made, and eventually we have people we haven't seen in a while coming over to drink and partake in some Wii. The only problem I really have with Wii is that you need a lot of room to play multiplayer games, especially the sports games. Luckily, this house has a fairly big center space with 2 couches and chairs all around, so it's a pretty suitable setup, but trying to play Tennis with 16 people crammed into a room is not really that easy. Still, it was nice to see everybody so interested in the Wii. As soon as people would see it, immediately they wanted to play it, and after playing it, didn't want to stop. I was a little worried about controllers getting stolen or damaged, but everyone was extremely careful with it, and not a single person refused to use the wrist strap. People knew that sometimes these games get physical, and the strap was doing a wonderful job of keeping the Wiis from getting damaged. Everybody just wanted to play it so bad. The Wii remote is so perfect in design and execution, it fit perfectly in everyone's hand, although some people wished there was a bigger Wiimote, which might not be a bad idea to see in the future.
Eventually by the end of the night at 1:30 or so, my Wii ballroom or w/e the
it's called had over 20 Miis in it. The biggest question that was encountered when creating a character was "to Mingle, or not to Mingle?" Most Mingled. The Wii interface is very easy to navigate, and very streamlined. Very easy to set up, too, as long as the sensor bar doesn't move. Everything is so sexy and sleek it seems to fit into your entertainment centers perfectly, and doesn't look very invasive at all like the 360 does. Most people were also pretty enthused about the price point, and it instantly became everyone's "must-have" gift for Christmas. Not to mention, it can play a mean game of Double Dash.
Looking at the Wii channels, the mere thought that all 3 pages would eventually be filled with different Wii channels was too much to comprehend.
The future looks amazing for this console.
Overall, the Wii seems to have a natural gravity about it, drawing people in and really getting people into the experience. I have never seen people so happy to play a video game in a very long time, and it definitely sparks more interest and interaction than just mashing buttons on a standard controller. Everybody will likely be talking about this system tomorrow and the Wii will be on the top of the lists pretty soon. The experiences had with the Wii completely blow everything else on the market out of the water in terms of interactivity, and while single player games are fun, it is clear the most enjoyable times are had in the company of others. I truly think that the Wii has everything it needs to be the most successful console of this generation. It was also a consensus among the party that gaming is now much cooler than it was. As one of my friends quoted Grandma's Boy, "it's the future of gaming." And he's right.
The future is about Wii.
