Wii owner - never played GC, need advice

CAGiversary!
Never played/owned a game cube and I am looking to pick up a wavebird, memory card and a few GC titles. Have there been good deals on wavebirds and memory cards in the past? I'd like to pick these things up for as cheap as possible. Am I best waiting for deals or have prices for these things dropped significantly since the GC launched? Any advice is welcome.

Wave Birds were quite expensive, and you could get a free one in ONM but not now of cause! But I don't think they are too expensive! And you can get some cheap memory cards from Gamestation, well If they sell them! The ones in Boston do, they are a pound there! Thats for a 64mb

Ebgames was selling the bigger Nintendo GC memory cards for $10 a year or so ago used. I've gotten Wavebirds for $20 or so in deals brand new.

Ebay is a good place to look. Buy from a reputable seller.

Otherwise prices on memory cards and Wavebirds haven't really fallen. I wouldn't expect there to be any major deals on them either as supplies are fairly low afaik.

GAmes are another story. Most GC games are $20 or under now with a few at $30 and maybe 1 worth buying at $50.

Pick up...

01. Beyond Good and Evil
02. Resident Evil 4
03. Eternal Darkess: Sanity's Requiem
04. Metriod Prime
05. Tales of Symphonia

A few tips:

1) Don't buy a third party memory card unless it does something special(I only know of 2 of these, and they do the same thing-allow you to put gamesaves into your computer. If you find one, get it, but otherwise, stick with official Nintendo ones)

2) I actually prefer wired controllers to Wavebirds. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, I don't want a Wavebird messing me up. The wired ones are cheaper, too.

Get a memory card 251(official one is black) if you plan on getting more than 5 games. The Memory card 59(grey) fills up too fast. The memory card 1019(white) is infinite, there is no way you could ever fill one up*
*you're results may vary if you're a diehard Gamecube fan

3) You have to buy Super Smash Bros. Melee. No matter what. Otherwise you might be a target of Nintendo fanboys who are also assasins.;)

Other good, cheap games(* denotes must-have):
Animal Crossing(even if you hate it, it comes with a memory card 59 for only $5 more than the cost of one, with a free game!)
*Timesplitters 2(Awesome multiplayer)
*Super Monkey Ball 1 or 2(Get 2, and if you like it, get 1)
Pikmin

Me too. They make a noticeable difference in gameplay in MKDD and RE4.

I just wish the damn cords were longer.
Wavebirds are over-rated. If you get tangled up in a controller's wires, you're probably doing it wrong. Besides, they lack rumble.
They're not overrated. Especially if you've got your GC or Wii stashed in a gaming cabinet or if your console sits more than 4-5 feet from your couch/chair. Even though I'd rather use a wired controller for certain games, I usually go wavebird simply for the convenience of it all.

how long is the cord exactly? I might be able to get away with getting a wired one.

Maybe a little over 6 feet? I'm not sure. My Wii is about 6 to 7 feet from my couch, and when I go corded to time trial a bit in MKDD, I have to scooch in a foot or so to give the controller a little slack.

It'd be worth googling, as my conception of distance is probably way off.

EDIT:
I googled, and the closest thing I could find quickly was a link to this dude at gamefaqs (I know, I know, but I'm just returning the results I got):

Says that the cord length is 6 feet. That seems about right to me.

You can buy cable extensions if you just HAVE to have a corded controller. I don't think Ive used a corded controller on any next-gen system since 2002.

I just bought a bunch of controller extensions. They cords get tangled up fairly often, but its better than spending 30 bucks or whatever a wavebird costs x4. I think you can get like 4 controller extenders on ebay for 8-10 bucks.

Wavebirds are underrated. I picked up a few of them used from GameStop for about $17 after discount about two years ago, which is much better than paying close to the $35 MSRP.

Everyone I know likes the wavebirds better but I love the wired controllers...they have rumble and are lighter and more comfortable. Of course wavebirds can play through walls.

Agreed. Once I got my Wavebirds, I NEVER went back to the corded controllers. I've never had any difficulty with them, and I used to play MKDD constantly back in the day.

As for games, Rogue Squadron (and to a lesser extent, Rogue Strike) is great if you like Star Wars in the least. Beach Spikers would be my first choice as a great CA game for the GC.
I'd be with you on Rogue Squadron II if it wasn't for the fact that Rebel (not Rogue) Strike includes the second game in co-op mode. Even with the flaws in the on-foot missions, I never understood the "eh, not bad" ratings for RS III.
I wish they'd have ditched the on-foot missions; that was really my biggest complain with the game. They just felt clunky and unneccesary.
Definitely pick up Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. That game is just as engrossing as the original.
QFT. I picked up a used copy of this game a few days ago (having never played it on PSX) and I love it.

Buy the Mega Man X GCN controller at Gamestop/ EBGames. It's $10 brand new and it works as well as a first party one, only it looks a hell of a lot cooler :D

Also pick up
Animal Crossing
Zelda Wind Waker
Viewtiful Joe Red Hot Rumble
Tales of Symphonia
Smash Bros. Melee
Bomberman Jetters
Metroid Prime
Mario Party 7
Mario Kart Double Dash!!
Paper Mario

and maybe Day of Reckoning if you enjoy wrestling...
