Wii sells 600k+ units in first week; 454k Zeldas

A lot of the original Xbox parts were actually off-the-shelf, which made it much easier to produce quickly, but also made it more costly for MS.

Anyway, the most interesting comparison IMO is that Wii's first week sales are roughly the same as 360's launch-to-the-end-of-the-year sales.
The original Xbox parts were very similar to the PC parts of the time, so they didn't run into any production issues.
Ah, well, that makes sense, explains the girth.
So they sold about 100k more copies of a game than Sony sold/made PS3's?

and sold 300k more consoles?

Sony didn't even release 400k console on launch... it was around 150K. They shanked everyone

What everyone seems to neglect when looking at Zelda's attach rate is its appeal. Those that were expecting higher than 75% are crazy. I think 75% is actually too high. I would have pegged it at around 60%.

Why? Two reasons. First, Zelda is a HUGE name amongst gamers but beyond that you would get blank stares. Mario on the other hand is a household name amongst gamers and non-gamers alike. If Mario Galaxy launched instead of Zelda, we probably would have seen a higher attach rate than Zelda. Especially since it has been 10 years since a Mario title launched with a system.

Two, genre. Zelda is basically an RPG-lite. Not exactly a genre that screams widespread appeal. An easy to play platformer, it is not. Not even every gamer can get into a genre they don't like, and RPG-type games is a tough one to crack if you aren't a fan of the genre. So in comparison, a platformer like Mario has more widespread appeal since it is infinitely easier to grasp and play.

Through the end of the year I expect the Zelda attach to drop a bit as more Wii's hit.

It doesn't really matter how many Wii's are sold in the first week. I would like to see how it does on a week to week basis and also how it fares in its life cycle. Let's not forget that the system doesn't even launch in Japan until Dec. 2nd. I'm just hoping the momentum gets a lot of units out there in a hurry so the installed base is big enough to entice 3rd parties...especially those that are sitting out on the PS3 for awhile or that won't be making as much on a PS3\XBOX360 title. It should be a fun race this gen.
