Wii U - General Discussion Thread

Pretty much. Only non-Nintendo system I own is a PS2 I bought cheap for Kingdom Hearts and Gundam games.
Wow, I honestly didn't think there was anyone like that out there any more. If you like JRPG's you'll probably need to get a PS3. The Xbox 360 had a few early on but the PS3 has a lot more. Then again, if all you want are platformer then I guess Nintendo is the console for you. I often see people on forums say things like, "OMG those other consoles are dudebro shooters!" but the truth is, the other consoles have much more variety than Nintendo's. Nintendo is almost entire platformers and Mario spin-offs.

Poor Tropical Freeze gets no love, it's the next big ticket title coming out for Wii U, and it even had a couple extra months of polish put into it with the delay (assuming so since this is Retro we're talking about). I may be in the minority here, but that is my most anticipated title, one that will be the first game I'll play when I eventually get a Wii U.

I just don't tire of good 2D platformers (as long as the mechanics are varied enough), I guess I'm the equivalent counterpart of the CoD / Battlefield epidemic on Sony / Microsoft consoles. I'm even looking forward to Yarn Yoshi too, as I'm just about to finally finish up Epic Yarn.
I'm excited for DK. The demo was awesome (at the Best Buy tour). I got paired up with a guy that was pretty good, and we were finding stuff the Nintendo Rep said nobody else had that weekend.

Except, I have no money, and a decent backlog. They also haven't been advertising like they should. I'm gonna have to wait on it.

Yeah, but the thing is you could totally live without either the PS3/PS4 or the 360/X1 but you kind of have to have a Nintendo console to go along with it. For me, I could live without the Microsoft stuff entirely. I only got an X1 because my son is a MS fanboy. I wouldn't be able to live with just the Wii U by any stretch of the imagination. But the Wii U and PS3/PS4 has me covered for 99% of what I want to play. There have been the occasional MS exclusive that I've played though (like Minecraft). But as you say, most of the MS exclusives that everyone raves about are dudebro shooters and I don't play those. I played Titanfall at PAX - have no interest to play it ever again. PS3, IMO, has the most diverse lineup of them all at this point so it is an easy choice over the 360 (which was my first HD console - remember when it was the go to platform for JRPGs?).

Of course for a lot of people Nintendo is useless if they don't like platformers, Mario, Zelda, etc. But I just think in general you can make a much stronger argument for owning a Wii U and then either an MS or Sony console than you can for owning both MS/Sony and skipping Nintendo.

The main MS exclusives that I liked were Fable, Gears, and Alan Wake. I'm probably not getting an X1 unless my kids want it in a few years. I will get a PS3 eventually (2014 or 2015 - probably next year unless everything I want is delayed).

Not JRPGs, Tales games. Though I have been meaning to seek out Arc Rise Fantasia. I also tend to get Nintendo-exclusive (sorta) games like Epic Mickey, the Ace Attorney games, and Sakura Wars V.

I have been tempted to get a PS3 for Tales games, Dead or Alive, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but before I do I would have to redo my entertainment center. I had to junk my Wii in order to fit my WiiU and I have to unplug my room fan in order to open up a plug for the console.

Plus, my PS2 has not been touched in almost 4 years and probably will not get touched anytime soon.

Yeah, I have always wanted to play Fable (own both in multiple versions) but never got around to it. I have a moderate interest in Alan Wake as well. My son played Gears and of course Halo but other than playing a little coop Halo with him (which was fun but I could live without it ;)) I'm not interested in those.

And did you mean PS4?

I'm playing Tales of Graces f right now and have Xillia on the pile. And I have the Symphonia remake preordered - I may finally complete it after getting about 90% through it on the Gamecube many years ago. Get a PS3 for those - you won't regret it. And play Ni No Kuni while you're at it, too.

To keep this somewhat on topic, I would love for those games to be on the Wii U as the tablet would be a perfect way to deal with inventory management (plus allow off-TV play which is a bigger deal on 100+ hour games). But then there is the allure of trophies, however slight it may be, that will always pull me to PS3/4 versions of multiplatform games...

I think their biggest mistake with the Wii U was not adding some sort of achievement system in. Imagine how awesome this could be on a Nintendo system. It would probably be "coins" of course and they really could have expanded the Mii system with it as well by allowing unlockable costumes/hats for your Mii with certain achievements. They really missed the boat on that.

And what is it with Mii's on the Wii U, anyway? They actually seem to be pretty much deemphasized (what with no Mii parade, or the voting thing, etc). Whereas on the 3DS they are a bigger deal now (the street pass games and hats). On the Wii U the Mii is pretty much just the thing you select upon logging in and then you don't really see them again except for standing around in the middle of the menus and in MiiVerse comments.

io - you're right, PS4.  Slip up after so many years of using PS3 I guess.

I agree that the PS3 is the way to go for the Tales games.  I also enjoyed Ni No Kuni but I didn't think it was as good as many others did.  I dislike SRPG's but enjoyed the hell out of Valkyria Chronicles.  That's a must buy for PS3 as are Journey and Unfinished Swan (which I prefer over Journey) and flower to a lesser extent.  I'm currently playing through Beyond Two Souls which I was lucky enough to get for $5 with the discount + Amazon's lightening deal on BF.  That game is (so far) very good too.  My wife is watching me play it and doesn't want me to play it unless she's there.  That doesn't usually happen unless it's a really interesting story.  Last time was The Walking Dead.

DNukem, I think if you get a PS3 you won't be disappointed.  If you just look at what I listed above, you can see huge variety.  I didn't even really touch on any shooters, open world games, or many other genres that the PS3 has that you won't find on Wii U.

I agree with you on the Mii part, IO.  In terms of games involving Miis, the Wii U is definitely lacking compared to 3DS.  I blame it on the lack of OS-level games like Streetpass Mii Plaza has.  I think there should be a Spotpass Mii Plaza with its' own set of games/things to do that has a more online focused effort, whereas Streetpass' efforts are locally focused.

Mii's on the Wii U kind of remind me of the avatars on the Xbox 360. outside of a couple of games it's mostly just there to look at (and for MS to charge you $3 for a virtual coat).

It won't be for a long while. Like I said earlier, I literally have no room for another game console right now. Plus, combining my Wii, VC, DS, and 3DS games, I have about 30-40 that are unfinished or lightly played.

Also don't like anything first-person and Strategy games are hit-or-miss with me. If they are more like Endless Frontier or Project X Zone, I will like them. If they are more like Fire Emblem, I won't.

Now that I bought one of these, my choices for memory are a 16GB flash drive, or a 2007 WD 500GB external hard drive with power supply. Since I am getting the 8GB console I will need one of these especially since I plan on downloading Wii Fit U and that will take up some space. Which one would be better to use. The flash drive will be either kingston or toshiba depending on which one I can locate first. Would it be safe to use an external drive from 2007, or is that too old? I take good care of the drive, I keep it unplugged and I keep a dust cover on it but after I use it for the Wii U it will be in constant use I think. I don't mind sacrificing the drive for Wii U only.

Or should I go out and get a 32GB flash drive?

Why the hell are you getting an 8GB console? Please slap your forehead or bang against wall in 3....2....1...GO! :wall:

I'm not sure flash drives work very well.  You can store stuff on them, but playing actual games off them is more read/write than they're meant to handle.  That's what Nintendo says, anyway.

My &*^%^%*(&(&%##%&*() gamepad won't respond!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not trying to deal with sending it into and this is no help: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/system_wiiu_gamepad.jsp?menu=screen_and_image&submenu=wup-gamepad-ts-screen-freeze.

Looks like it's going back to the store if Nintendo's phone line can't help me fix this thing.

How do I save Wii U games saves? I'm on World 7 in SM3DW.
Turned out I had to COMPLETELY remove the screen protector.

I was getting ready to take it back to the store, took off the screen protector, and Voila......fixed! Initially, I'd lifted a corner of it and tried the screen like that.

I do recall the Nintendo rep mentioning debris, or anything in the corner of the screen, could affect it. Maybe I'll get another and try to center it so it isn't touching any corners.

Um because the skylanders bundle was on sale for $220 free shipping and no tax from newegg through TRU and I have a couple storage options just sitting here. Guess I am cleaning out my external hard drive soon.

But the Wind Waker bundle was only $250 on Black Friday at Target!

I'm using an elago nano with a 32GB micro SD Card. You're right in terms of SD Cards not being good of long term reading / writing of data but the way I figure it, it's basically written to once to store the game and then become read-only in terms of the game code (think of when you put the game disc into the drive - it's not writing to that) and the actual game data such as saves, etc. are stored in the console's memory.

Yeah, good point. Seems like USB drives should be fine too, then, right? I have a new 32GB drive I could use in a pinch. Why does Nintendo say not to use them then, though? Y THEY LIE.

It really all should be the same to the computer/Wii U. It's just a USB storage device.

The only thing you need to watch out for is power requirements. A USB flash drive should be fine as the Wii U, according to USB specs, really should be able to handle the power requirements (.5A) of the device. Any spinning drives will likely need an external power source. Even the USB cases I have for my 2.5" drives have an extra USB A connector for external power.

There really shouldn't be any problems with USB flash drives on the Wii U, providing you have a decent flash drive (there are some cheap, crappy USB flash drives out there).

It seems very difficult to find an actual external hard drive these days that comes with a power cord, and I have been shopping for them recently. I don't know where Nintendo expects us to come up with such a thing when its not stocked by most major retailers at least from what I can see. Unless you have an old drive kicking around like I do. I heard about the Y cable, but I doubt that is recommended either. I guess I am using my external hard drive with this since I am getting a new drive for my PC this Xmas.

Basically what you are describing are desktop external HDD and portable external HDD. Desktop ones usually have ac adapters and are meant for desktop use. You will usually not find them under 1TB these days. Portable are the ones you are describing w/o a AC adapter and you'll find those usually 320GB or larger.

Most stores don't have a specific enough way to categorize the difference between Desktop and Portable or they usually lump them together.

Here's Amazon's list of Desktop External HDDs, but before careful because they still manage to include some USB Powered (i.e. portable) ones in there.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=lp_595048_nr_p_n_feature_five_bro_0?rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A%21493964%2Cn%3A541966%2Cn%3A1292110011%2Cn%3A595048%2Cp_n_feature_five_browse-bin%3A2419644011&bbn=595048&ie=UTF8&qid=1387383293&rnid=2419643011

In the future with USB 3 and beyond AC Adapter/Desktop HDDs aren't going to be necessary as USB 3 can power and data transfer just fine. I find it ironic that currently the Wii U is only "next gen" console that supports external HDD, but only had USB 2.0 whereas the Xbone and PS4 both have USB 3.0, but right now those ports are pretty much only use to charge controllers or for headsets.

I just bought a Y cable to attach an external hard drive I had around the house to my Wii U. Everything I've read says that should work fine for additional power.

Don't even bother buying one until you actually need it. Most of the games are small in size and unless you're going to download full Wii U games instead of buying on disc, it shouldn't matter for a while.

Blaster man is correct. When I looked into it I initially thought, "Oh, 2TB hanging off the back would be neat. I won't ever have to worry about it." Then I looked up the sizes of things and started adding it up and it'll be a long time before my 32GB micro SD is filled and, even after that, I still have plenty of internal storage.

It's not like there are going to be 100s of games you'll want or likely buy. The number, at least for me, is likely to be around a dozen or so.

I definitely agree with this. Especially since Nintendo's eShop/online system (or lack thereof) makes me lean towards physical media over digital more so than any other system.

What? The ones that are typically externally powered are 3.5" HDDs, and the ones powered by USB are usually 2.5" HDDs. The 3.5" HDDs use 12V, and the 2.5" HDDs use 5V. USB 2.0 provides 5V @ 500 mA, and USB 3.0 provides 5V @ 900 mA. USB 3.0 isn't going to eliminate external AC adaptors. It'd need to be able to provide at least 3-4 times as much current to eliminate AC adaptors for 3.5" HDDs.

Not sure what the size has to do with my statement. My point was that USB 3.0 passes enough to power and the bandwidth/speed is good enough that it's not an issue (in most uses). Obviously future USB (4.0 and higher) will improve on this. Also, the biggest reason why desktop external HDDs are 3.5" is platter size/denisty, but with 2TB 2.5" starting to become available, 3.5" HDD will eventually be phased out.

I already mentioned that I have a hard drive here that I can use for this purpose, as I am getting a new one for my PC, so I don't really mind using it. I just went to gamestop and bought a few download codes (wii sports bowling, wii sports tennis and earthbound) so I will need more than the 3GB that the 8GB system lets me have, plus I want to download Wii Fit U. Although that might be all I am downloading for a while aside from system updates.

The only reason I bought the codes is because 2 of them were cheaper than buying them on the actual e-shop as far as I can tell plus for pure convenience so I don't have to put my credit card info on the e-shop. Also these games aren't available in physical form, so I have no other choice than digital. It seems most of the Wii U's good games are digital games not available on disc.

I also have no interest in playing those mario games, so why buy the bundle, if I paid $250 for a bundle from another site, that is more like $270-$275 for me with tax. With the skylanders bundle I paid $220 with no shipping and no tax plus it has things I actually want in it. The point is that not every bundle is not right for every person, the bundle I bought is the right choice for me. Again I already have an external hard drive that isn't being used and just happens to be the right type, so its not costing me anything extra to repurpose it for the Wii U.

Miis on 3DS are REALLY important though, especially with the Streetpass Mii Plaza, which is like...the BIG GAME on the system.

So as far as I can tell, the Nintendo Direct today consisted of two things:

Hyrule Warriors or something like that--a Zelda game done in non-Zelda style by Tecmo Koei to sell Wii U's to Dynasty Warriors fans.  I don't care about it at all, and I doubt most of the West will, but it'll hopefully sell Wii U's in Japan, so it's a good thing.  That I otherwise don't care about...

NES Remix--This sounds cool as hell in practice, but... $15?  I would have bought it instantly for $5 or $10, but $15?  Ars Tecnica got a quick review out, too, and it sounds pretty underwhelming for $15.  Seems like a $15 demo to justify the existence of many of the otherwise totally uninteresting NES VC titles.

So that's it?  I realize I already bought a Wii U, so it's not me Nintendo has to impress, but I was hoping to hear about something I cared about.

Don't forget the Luigi statue released to club nintendo today.  Although I really wish they would release more e-shop games on CN, I keep waiting for something I actually want to play but I am just not seeing it.

No mention of playing as Cranky Kong in DK Tropical Freeze?

Also, while Hyrule Warriors looks awesome...Link is right-handed. That means more motion crap.

Woo! Rosalina is in Smash Bros.! Also, Pit and Toon Link are returning.

I only caught the end, but Mario Kart 8 looked fantastic.

NES Remix looked good to me until I read the arstechnica review. I'm pretty sure I'd be disappointed with it at this point.

Hyrule Warriors looked good to me.

I'm looking forward to Mario Kart and Donkey Kong, as well.

Hyrule Warriors has plenty of potential as a good mindless (yet still enjoyable) single player game (as most all of the Dynasty Warriors games are), but I'm more interested in how they handle the multiplayer (assuming that it has one).

Obvious inclusion would be two player co-op with one solely on the gamepad (Link and Sheik, anyone?), but there could be more interesting ways.  Two player vs. with one on the gamepad (Link vs. Ganondorf) for map dominance, even local four players on the main screen co-op vs. the single, more powerful solo gamepad player.

This could even be a gateway to a decent MOBA type game for Nintendo, they just have to come up with some decent playable characters to fill out the roster.

Somehow I feel my hopes will just disappoint me in the end, but I've always enjoyed Dynasty Warriors games MP much more than SP.

Wish that was for 3DS and cheaper than $15. I just can't see myself sitting down and playing a puzzle game in the big screen. Pick up and play games like that are better on portables IMO.
I thought this too, but then I also though, well, I use do remote play or whatever... But yeah. I'm scared it'll be a $15 Dr. Mario re-skin. But I'm also scared that that might be entirely sufficient for me to buy it anyway.

Yeah, I find the remote play on Wii U mostly useless due to the limited range of the Gamepad.

My media room is upstairs. Only places I'd want to use remote play would be the living room or bedroom downstairs and the range doesn't work.

Oh yeah, forgot you said that.  yeah, it's a real shame.  My Wii U is on my main floor (everything is), but the only places I can play it are the living room (where the Wii U is), the kitchen... maybe the bathroom... maybe like uhh the garage (that could be okay in the summer)...

Bedroom would be lovely, but it's really patchy there.

Can someone tell me if the gamepad saps battery when the console and the pad are turned off, red light on the console? I just don't want to come back to a dead Gamepad after 2 weeks or something,

Most stuff with a battery loses charge, even when off, and the gamepad is no exception, or at least mine isn't. You'll come back to a dead gamepad probably after two weeks, but why not just plug it in when you want to play, while playing, or charge it up before you want to play? It doesn't take long.
