Wii U - General Discussion Thread

I now have enough credit built up at Gamestop to get a Wii U. Is there a list somewhere that points out what a Wii can do but the Wii U cant? I will ask the questions I am looking to get answered below I would be thankful for any help.

I have a bunch of virtual console games saved on a SD card will I be able to use them on the Wii U?

Does it play Gamecube games?

Will I need to hold on to my Wii's other controllers like a classic controller for anything?

Thanks,
Anthony

Wii can play Gamecube games. Wii U = no.

Wii purchases can transfer over.

I think all if not most Wii controllers work on the Wii U.
Not actually true, but you're free to believe whatever you want to make up. Wii U supposedly has a weak CPU and a decent GPU (better than the 360 and PS3).
About equal to the ps3 to be precise

Speaking of the ps3 what percentage of the cell processor have they gotten to work. Last I heard it was only using 60ish%

I dunno last I heard devs just use 1 or two.

Think I'm going to return my wii u to gamestop tomorrow. did you guys have any problems returning the console? what excuse did you give?? I actually have a legitimate excuse, it won't fucking turn on. I mean it turns on, but no signal is detected. I think it's bricked. I'm not sure I should even mention it, but if they open the box and see my messy plastic bags and disorder, they may deny the return.... worst case. I hate talking to those employees, to be honest. i want to be in and out.

They will likely deny the return... Just be up front with them, tell them it was a Christmas gift and the thing won't turn on. They will do one of two things: exchange it for a new one (if applicable), or deny the return and tell you to take it up with Nintendo.

if they exchange it for a new one... then i can pretty much just return the replacement as new, no?

In theory it sounds cut and dry but it's never that easy. Assuming they exchange it, you'd probably have better luck returning it at a different GameStop store. If they won't take it, just sell it on Craigslist or eBay and get your money that way.

yeah my plan was to drive 10 miles down the road and return it to the other one. this will also probably be harder since i ordered it online but i hope it doesnt make a difference. i really don't see why they wouldn't exchange it if they plugged it in and legitimately saw the problem. hopefully the combination of the lingering christmas spirit and mass amount of traffic they will get tomorrow will work in my favor

Correct me if I am wrong but I think when you return something to GS it hurts the employee's numbers of the employee whom is doing the return which is probably why we see animosity about GS taking returns. Numbers are everything to a GS employee and in some cases they may lose their jobs or get their hours cut if their numbers aren't up to snuff. Of course the general public doesn't know this, and you should play ignorant if you want to get the return done. Aka just say it doesn't turn on. If they didn't return it that would be pretty shady. Maybe if they try to deny you the return just tell them you had a very unsatisfactory experience with GS because of this non working console and tell them you have an anxious kid at home waiting to play the system and you don't want to wait 2 weeks for Nintendo to send you a new one.

I think you should do the return at the original GS and then if you want to return it again after you get the new one you should go to a different store. If you do this you should tell them that you just decided you didn't want to keep the console after you had a bad experience with it the first time. I would wait a day or 2 before returning the new one so it doesn't look like you are trying to pull an immediate flip.

Ive never had a problem with returns at gamestop. Hell ive done 2 return and rebuys with in the last month when they ran a sale a few days after I bought some stuff.

This is a different situation. You're trying to return a game console that you opened. Once it's opened, you're pretty much locked in to keeping it at that point.

The terms and conditions to the return policy are on any receipt from Gamestop. (I'm looking at one right now.)

Opened new merchandise (including tablets) = identical excahnge within 30 days of purchase (no refunds)

saraab, i am pretty much going to do exactly what you said

From the info on the problem I have gathered, I imagine MANY people will be doing this tomorrow. And I am a male in my 20s... can you imagine all the pissed off parents coming in over the same issue i have?? I am just going to keep my words short and say it doesn't turn on. That's exactly what happens, too. If they say they have no stock to exchange me for and cant do a return ill be fucked but prob just hop around to different stores and press my luck

thanks for the replies guys. im pretty stressed over this

I remember having some problem getting a signal from mine at first, too - but then it worked all of a sudden. It could just be an initial setup/HDMI issue.

Or is there some known issue with a lot of the systems? You seem to allude to a large-scale problem being discussed on some other forum.

My plaza menu is showing the default launch plaza (showing none of my played games) with no Mii Universe comments. I know I'm connected to the internet because I've been playing Black Ops online. Anyone else have this problem?

It takes time for the plaza to populate with information. Give it a few hours and eventually you'll see friends, random people, messages, other games, etc.

Not sure if its some kind of "gathering information" time or maybe its trying to figure out what to show you by profiling you. Dunno, but I know it'll show up in time.

I should have mentioned that I had my Wii U since launch and it's been showing the default plaza since about when TVii launched. Looking at the Nintendo technical forums I found out I wasn't the only one with this problem.

exchange successful will try to return tomorrow at different store. all i said was it didnt turn on and the manager said make sure everythings there and exchange it for a new one. as expected they were busy.

Just got surprised with a Wii-U, so I guess I'll be headed out tomorrow to pick up New Super Mario Bros & Zombi-U with some of the gift cards I received. :)

Excellent job, I would be pretty stressed if I made a $300+ purchase and it didn't work as well. Now you have an unopened item so you should be able to return to a different store, if worse comes to worse you can sell on ebay or CL and get money that way.

It doesn't matter now but I would think it would turn on even if it wasn't connected to a TV, because I think the other consoles at least turn on if if its not connected, but it might be different for the Wii U.

It's funny, I've had similar problems with my 360, which won't fully power on unless:
1) It's plugged into the TV AND
2) the TV is turned to the proper input.

My WiiU will power on and fully function even if it's just plugged into the wall. Example, I took my WiiU on vacation during Thanksgiving, left all of the HDMI/Sensor Bar cables at home, and was able to play NSMBU just fine via the gamepad (also able to surf the web thanks to Wi-Fi).

Played the Wii U over the break and it was a horrible experience. The tablet thing felt like a gimmick. I don't get the praise for Zombie-U, felt so repetitive with the cricket bat. New Super Mario Bros. was fine and dandy though. Without the 3rd party support, it will fail miserably over time. The last Nintendo that I enjoyed a lot was the Gamecube; I still remember the intro whilst turning it on. :)

I like turning my Wii U on because...
A - I don't need my TV remote to turn it on
B - I don't need my TV on in order to use it anyway

Being able to turn on the TV with the Gamepad is actually really awesome.

the third party support will be there the question is that will they get worth while exlusive 3rd party games to make people want to buy the system. Games that come out for wii u,ps3,360 will not be that much better on the u because of gamepad. The addition will be a minor one and not impact game much.

after using it for awhile i feel like tviii was a lame addon and waste of time.
Id say most 3rd party publishers hardly even do exclusives anymore.

Really, why bother? You get more sales doing cross platform.
very true. these days other then few exlusives they are half done and cheesy.

to be exact, what would happen is i would turn on the wii. the blue light would remain solid and the fans would run. my tv would read "no input." I assumed it was downloading updates so i left it on for a couple hours. no dice. the gamepad would not find the wii u. and that's as far as i got. if i can't get my money back i'll accept a gift card and just save it for the next gen of 2013. win win

I definitely feel like something around here is a waste of time, but it's not my Wii U.

ha.

Just to add my opinion, I have been pleasantly surprised by how much my family and I have enjoyed the wiiu since yesterday (holiday gift).
The gamepad is used well in the wii dashboard and nintendoland that I have experienced. I dont expect it to replace my gaming pc for games, but it offers a lot I cant get anywhere else too.

Actually, there are some genre's of games that will have huge improvements over their 360/PS3 counterparts. Any JRPG will instantly be better with touch controls on the tablet. Especially turned based and strategy. Also Strategy games like Command and Conquer (if Generals 2 comes out multiplatform), will be very noticeably better with the gamepad.

I've been having a weird issue with my Wii U.

I finally got it to connect to the Wii shop and started to redownload all my VC games (about 55 in all). It went fine for anything that was smaller (100 blocks or less) but when I got to the 200+ block Turbo Grafx CD games, it would never get the full game. Mario would be running along, grabbing coins by the ones and twos (never the big strings of coins like I'd get with the smaller games) but at some point between the second and third blocks, it would just stop giving me coins and eventually kick me out to "Try Again".

Moar firmware updates plz

those kind of games are made for pc gamepad or not just saying.

I finally broke down and bought my Wii U yesterday. I was a bit hesitant with all of the mixed reviews, even more so with the fact that I have a 360 and PS3. However, once I started playing the system, all of my doubts dissiapated. The interface is great and I have enjoyed playing the system. In my opinion the system is great, and I am glad I made the purchase. So, if your on the fence about buying the system...buy it.

If you haven't done so already, search the eshop for the Rayman Legends demo. That game alone makes owning the Wii U early on worth it, and this coming from someone who greatly enjoyed Mario U, Nintendo Land, and Sonic Racing.

I was still on the fence until I got hooked on Donkey Kong's Crash Course. What an addictive fricking game. Anyone who says Nintendoland is multiplayer only is nuts.

I wish the way controllers are used between titles wasnt so varied. Its difficult to know what types of controllers you need for what assortment of players.

an example, in mario wiiu multiplayer the gamepad isnt used to control a character.

Porn app coming to Wii U

http://mynintendonews.com/2012/12/25/porn-app-coming-to-wii-u/

SugarDVD, which offers unlimited adult TV streaming on your PlayStation 3, iPad, Xbox 360, or Android device, has announced that it’s bringing its application to Wii U. SugarDVD offers unlimited streaming porn straight to your video game consoles for $7.95 a month. The application is apparently launched through the web browser, and offers high quality, full length movies.

Saw that the other day, I thought for sure that Nintendo would have some approval process to keep those kind of applications for being allowed on the console.
