Wii's that play DVDs

Trek234

CAGiversary!
Has anyone heard anything else about the Wii's that play DVDs? I am wondering if they will do anything else. Right now I am holding off buying a Wii because I am not sure if it would be worth it buy one of the newer ones with that feature or not.

Is anyone else holding off on buying for that reason? I was at Target and there were Wiis on the shelf sunday morning, but walked by because I knew that new one was coming out. Now I am wondering if I made a mistake....

There's not even been confirmation that DVD-enabled Wiis will come to the US (or if it's a hardware vs. software issue), unless I'm not remembering correctly. If nothing else, it will be out in Japan long before the US, so you'll know well in advance.

id imagine they will release a channel sometime down the line for like 10 bucks, the wii has a dvd drive so they just have to upgrade the firmware on it

It's just a software and license issue, since Wii games are on DVDs and Wiis would have no problems with DVD playback if Nintendo had decided to include DVD playback. However Nintendo doesn't want to pay the DVD Player licensing fees, which I understand since most people own more then 1 DVD player and don't need another.

weren't they planning on releasing it sometime in the 3rd quarter? or am i just remembering incorrectly? btw nice godzilla avatar ;)

I thought I remember some Nintendo employee saying that enabling it to play DVDs would be more complicated than just downloading a new channel, but I can't seem to find the source.

You aren't buying a Wii yet because you want to wait for one that plays normal dvds, eventhough in all likelihood you probably already have a DVD player? If you don't have a DVD player, that would be understandable but if you do, just buy a Wii. It is well worth it.

You can buy a standalone progressive scan dvd player for 30 bucks.
If Nintendo can make Wiis play dvds through a software/firmware patch, either for free or for a small charge, I'm not averse to that (though I probably wouldn't pay for it). I am glad they didn't add dvd playback and increase the retail price though. To me, now, dvd playback is a very minor benefit, and definitely not a selling factor. I have 7 DVD players, so paying more for a game console to play dvds is not an attractive proposition.
I can see the argument of "one device to do it all" would have a benefit in certain limited situations--apartments, dorms, etc. But for me, it's a nonissue.

$26 at target with prog scan =)

Dudes and ladies, it's not about that...

some people (like me) like a console to be able to play dvd b/c of space problems, like component inputs and cooling spaces under the TV stand. Another dvd player will take up space and av/component inputs. Not to mention other "side" problems, like extra remote controls.... the master remote control requires time to program and some dvd player brands can't even be done.

Anyhow, my PS3 does the trick for me so i don't need the Wii to play dvds... Of course, i will not kill my PS3's life by playing dvds, cause it plays BRs... Thus, i still wish the Wii could play dvds. For that reason, i'm in the market for another dvd player, see what i mean?

My Apex player has been with me for soooo long that i feel bad wanting to get rid of it.

Thanks. It's a screencap I took either from Godzila vs SpaceGodzilla or Godzilla vs Destroyah.

I'd imagine that's because there's no way to get a digital out with the current hardware setup. So no dolby digital if they do release software.

I read that too. (Nintendo saying it will require hardware change) Is it possible they could add an HDMI port or something extra too?

That is what I am waiting for. I read that Nintendo said it would cost more too. I bet they will add something else too to justify the extra cost. Otherwise who will pay more just to play DVDs?

One word: Harmony.
You can pay a little more and get one where you can program megamacros etc., but for a combination of price, power, and ease of us, Harmony's got it.

I doubt Nintendo would add an HDMI port to the Wii since it would only be used to upconvert DVDs, I doubt the Wii would be able to upconvert games.
Really a hardware revision would only be required for digital sound, since Wii mod chips let you play DVDs.

Interesting.... i'm gonna do some research...

But the Wii is Bluetooth. Not RF.

You're right, my Wii is the one thing (I've tried) that my Harmony doesn't work, because as you say it's bluetooth. For everything else, though, it rocks--and the Harmony couldn't replicate everything in the Wiimote anyway (rumble, sound, etc.)

I hate to be the one to break this to you but Bluetooth is RF, or Radio Frequency.

Wii has only analog stereo surround output, doesn't it? If Nintendo makes a DVD playing Wii, they ought to add some hardware capability to output digital audio. So it is just more than a firmware update. Otherwise, what's DVD playing Wii good for if it can't do Dolby Digital or DTS?
