If I were to buy a black iPod nano, would it be easily scuffed up?
What if I had a case for it?
Is white just the better choice?
If I were to get it engraved with a name, is that smart? (Not looking to resell)

i don't think you can return a engraved ipod if you have problems with it

and i think the best case out there is agent 18 hardcase, i have a iskinduo, but i wouldn't really recommend it because the rubber stuff attracts dust

if you just want to protect from scratches and not drops, you can get an invisible shield (google it)

Yes they scuff and scratch easy so much so that, people filled a civil suit against apple when the nanos first came out. Wait a little while. Apple is rereleasing the Nanos in aluminum like the minis were made out of so they don't scuff so easy.

Never get an ipod engraved. A theory some of us Apple fans have is that Apple gives free engraving on the ipods because they know it would be harder to sell on the used market. Apple doesn't want their products on the used market for three reasons. one is that having products being sold as used lessen the prestige of your company name.
Two is that people will buy an ipod and fill it with music from itunes and then after a year or so sell it on ebay full of music. Which something apple doesn't want because they want the new owner to buy music from itunes.
Three is that they want the money from all of the sales of their products they get no money from used items.

Would getting a white Nano reduce some of the scuffing that would appear more so on the black version? I don't really have the time to wait for an additional color to come out. I'd prefer black but if the white would seriously reduce some of the scuffing, I just may settle.

No the ipod nano scuffs no matter what. I wasn't talking about colors, they have a new case type coming out. The nano is made of plastic right now and the new one will be made of metal. This will stop scuffing, no matter what nano you get it will scuff. They all scuff so bad that people filed a class action lawsuit.

The scuffing is so ubiquitous that, amongst a younger crowd, it is "uncool" to have an unscuffed Nano. I hadn't heard about the new Nano aluminum design. Sounds nice.

I would second the Invisible Shield recommendation, except I've misplaced it. It's invisible! (I'm not kidding, where the hell did I put it?)

Restoring lustre to your scuffed iPod isn't that difficult, though.

Are the video iPods getting that aluminum case? I was thinking about upgrading to a 30 gb video from my mini and if there was a new cover for it, I might just wait.

it wont scuff if you keep it on a velvet cushion in a glass box.

personally i couldn't care less about scuff or scrathes or chunks broken off, as long as it works.

The bigger ipods are in metal cases already I belive(?). If not the big ipods don't scuff at all. I have a 2 year old 15 gig ipod that looks pretty good.

The back of my Nano is cuffed but that's no biggie. The front is still pretty flawless. The wheel though, its seen a lot of use.
