Will GTA: SA be the first game you play with a black man as the main character?

I was thinking about this today...
I've never played Shadow Man, and I can't recall any others, so it will be my first.

Hehe, I brought up this same question to my roommate a while ago. Excluding those games based on movie license (like Blade), I think GTA:SA is the first game to feature a black main character.

I could be wrong though.
Riddick in Chronicles of Riddick is sorta black.
I think Vin Diesel's mom was black and his dad was white, but I'm not sure. I can't think of any other games besides San Andreas either.

Akuji the Heartless on PSone was a decent enough game, and all the Spawn titles are based on an African American lead. The Suffering featured a black lead as well.

Forgotten Worlds on Sega Genesis,
although the lack any minorites in most games is kinda weak, if you ask me,

I assume Albion(fable) means land of Albinos?

You assume wrong. Albion is an ancient name for England, and is still used in poetry for the most part. It been used in several games, Fable, as you mentioned, as well as the Creatures series. Remember that game creators, and some fantasy authors, largely lack the creatvity to come up with a new world, so they dig into obscure mythology, change a few letters, and come up with a "new" concept.

Back to the original question, I'll also throw in Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.

next time I'll alert you when I use sarcasm(sarcasm), see :D

Return of the Jedi games with a Death Star sequence have you taking on the piloting role of Lando Calrissian, at which point 'Chasing amy' must be referenced.

Sorry, sarcasm detector's broke today. Maybe tomorrow.

Doesn't Streets of Rage have a black character you can play as? Also I'm pretty sure Urban Chaos, the main character is a black woman. Since I played both of those and Shadow Man, the GTA: SA won't be my first.

Yes, yes, as well as Michael Jordan in the Windy City...
booyaaaaa
When I created myself in Def Jam - Fight For NY, I think I was the only white character in the game. Does that count?
Yeah, I was white also....with my white GF (Carmen Electra)

A lot of these games are sports or "famous" character games....
Michael Jackson's moonwalker, I admit I really liked that game WHOOOOO!
Wow, you leave yourself WIDE open for jokes on that one :D

Looking back on these posts, blacks are much better represented than Mexicans — can we get no love?

Seriously, who do we have... Tony Gonzalez in Madden?

And don't say Manny Calavera in Grim Fandago (great game BTW) because he wasn't anything — he was dead.

Danny Trejo in Def Jam: FFNY. Seriously, when I saw he was in the game is when I pre-ordered it. He is so cool!

Uh-oh guys — we seem to have offended the super-sensitive white kid.

Probably. I have a spawn game but haven't played it yet. I really don't keep track though.

Anyway, the stereotypical gamer (most of us) is a white male. It doesn't make much sense to have anything other than that as a main character. Unless, of course, you're using sex to sell your game.

hahaha no im not offended....this topic is just ridiculous. trying to remember if you ever had a game with a black lead character.

I can see how you might be viewing it as such, but as a minority I think it's a very poignant topic that's really opening people's eyes to the unspoken discrimination in video games.

Take San Andreas for example: The lead is a black "gangsta," not a lawyer or a business man.

It's actually pretty sad, and if I ever get my foot in the door of the industry it'll be something I strive to change.

OOOO OOOOO

I know....

Power Punch II with Mark Tyler

The cornball flop of a Punch-Out!!! sequel with Mike Tyson boxing aliens that was so bad for an NES game... they completely (and thankfully) severed it from Punch-Out!!! and Mike Tyson all together.... changing the name to... "Mark Tyler"

not really a sports game... but definately a black game character legend...

While I completely agree with you on videogame discrimination, it would be kind of silly to have a black (or white, or italian) lawyer as the main character of GTA, as the whole point of the game is to be a criminal.
