[quote name='chickenhawk']OK....thanks for the clarification. It seems I misjudged your ability to look at your teams flaws. They do have good defenders in the guys you mention, but they don't play them enough. Daniels was a rookie this year so maybe he can help them in this regard. I think you stated the problem without even knowing it though. "The Big Three will probably never be good defenders..." Their three best players, at 3 crucial spots do not play good defense. They have been in the league long enough that I can safely say they aren't going to start playing D now. IMHO, one of them needs to go (or come off the bench) so they can start a stopper who can play the opponents best perimeter player.
Re: the shooting %...you kinda changed your tune. Before you were saying that they played decent defense if you looked at the field goal percentage....then I quoted the actual numbers and now you admit that that wasn't the case.
Anyway, we could go all day on this, which is probably bad for both of our jobs.

LOL, yeah but I enjoy talking sports, so I'll go one more time, since I'm done with my work for the day.
Don't forget, Josh Howard was a rookie, too. He played awesome most of the season, but he kinda took a step back in the playoffs.
The Mavs will always get burned if all they play is man-to-man defense. Don Nelson knows this and that's why the Mavs play more zone defense than anyone else in the league. That helps to hide our weaknesses on defense. but in order to play a good zone, we need a good center to help stop the streaking guards who slash through the zone and get shots in the paint. I believe Ostertag can help in this regard.
Because they play the zone, they don't have to have Nash or Finley always playing super defense. But Dirk needs to play better defense. It sad at times to see when he has to guard a faster player. He gets his feet moving really fast and then I know something bad is going to happen. He's such an agile big man, but I just have no clue as to why he isn't playing better defense. Nash and Finley are probably too old to start playing better defense now, but Dirk is still really young. He came into the league at like 18 or 19.
On the percentage issue, I was talking about the regular season. I knew they didn't play good defense in the playoffs, but I could remember reading countless articles on their improved D during the season. Also, Nelson made defense a point in the preseason. It seemed to have helped, but like I said, playing Sacramento will always hurt your stats and defense.
