What's the Nokia one?
Oops, looks like I was mistaken. I thought there was a Nokia Music app, but I guess I was just thinking of Nokia MixRadio.

I'm sure there are pros and cons to 8.1 but I needed the ability to move games onto the SD card as my phone was constantly running out of memory, so update I did.
Yeah, that is definitely a huge improvement to the platform. I got the 32GB version of the 1520 but I'm already down to 9 GB, so I'll likely need to use the SD slot in the very near future.

It's nice finally being able to assign a custom sound to text messages as well.
That was already a feature. Or at least it has been since I started using my new phone.

That has been the main reason I've been looking forward to 8.1. I will need to finish up a couple of games before I update though because I don't trust the update to not screw up my saved games.

I can tell you it didn't screw up my Angry Birds Space save, but I wouldn't have lost any sleep if it had, just moved onto one of the other 8 versions of the game.

Also if you move games from the phone to the SD using Storage Sense it specifically notes the size of the save file, hence I guess you can be fairly sure it's being moved with the game.

Couple pros for me, both on the home screen:  adding a third column and the option to have a background picture.  Makes it look like a brand new phone (Lumia 920)

FREE GAMES* (I love WPCentral)

"Asphalt 7: Heat – Launched at 99 cents, but now regularly sells for $4.99.

  • Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles – Launched at $6.99, but now regularly sells for $4.99.
  • Brain Challenge – Regularly an insane $4.99. Free might still be too expensive for this one.
  • Earthworm Jim – Launched at $4.99 but dropped to 99 cents.
  • Let’s Golf 2 – Regularly $4.99.
  • Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour – Regularly $6.99. Modern Combat 4, N.O.V.A. 3, and Order & Chaos don't run on the Lumia 625 since it only has 512 MB of RAM.
  • N.O.V.A. 3 – Regularly $6.99.
  • Order & Chaos Online – Regularly $6.99. Amusingly/annoyingly, this particular game doesn’t run properly on the Lumia 1520, one of the phones it’s being given away on. The inventory graphics glitch severely, making the game all but unplayable.
  • Shark Dash – Regularly 99 cents." - Paul Acevedo
My own opinions now of the ones I've played,

Assassin's Creed - Took awhile to grow on me. Once you get used to the controls, it is fun.

Earthworm Jim - I didn't enjoy this game at all

Order & Chaos Online - I really wanted to get into this game, but I can barely touch my phone while playing it because it gets so hot. I've been told not to worry about it, but I do to the point that I can't play it.

I'm pretty sure Brain Challenge has at least one glitched achievement. I'm not sure about the others.

* For Nokia Lumia 625, Nokia Lumia 1020, Nokia Lumia 1320, Nokia Lumia Icon, Nokia Lumia 1520

Nice!

I already own most of them, but still a huge win to get a few freebies. Here's hoping Order & Chaos get an update to work with the 1520 at some point.

ps. Here are the direct links (US) to the free versions for those having trouble finding them.

Assassin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles

Brain Challenge

Earthworm Jim

No freebies for my poor little 521. Oh well....

Red Stripe deal for WP is Carcassone....again! I am hoping Win8 doesn't get a repeat. I would love 4 Elements II , Keflings, or Royal Envoy. Anything really besides the stuff they keep recycling.

Anyone know if there are any hidden camera apps that run? 8.1 killed my battery life and when I look at usage the camera is 2nd on the list even though I wasn't using it.

Multiple tech sites are reporting that as of yesterday, Halo: Spartan Assault and Skulls of the Shogun are now universal apps between WP and Win 8.
Interesting! So does that mean since I bought Halo: SA last week for Win8, I can now get it free on WP? It must suck for people who paid for both last week when they went on sale.

Seems so. Apparently you need 8.1 on your phone because of the newer store version and the process isn't super clear. I've heard if you own it on Win8 and go into the store on your phone and hit buy it'll tell you that you already own it, but I can't try it out for myself and confirm.

I try buying both but my memory for my surface 2 and windows 8 phone was full.. so hopefully and does that mean are we not going to have separate achievements?

It has been working for some people. I haven't been able to get it to work from WP to Win8 for Skulls. Even after getting a Marketplace update today. Probably will be more available once 8.1 is closer to official release.

Should still have separate achievements, at least for the games currently released (like Spartan Assault and Skulls).

I bought it on WP last week and it's still trying to charge me on Win8. It looks like I got screwed.

The Windows 8 Red Stripe Deal is Shark Dash
Sweet! I almost picked this one up last week, but got side tracked. I thought MS didn't allow the price for Win8 games to go below $1.49. I'll pick this up later today. LOL $1 saved. I'll probably just pick the WP version with it. :)

On those freebies, is there anyway to download the games so that when I do upgrade from my 521 I'll have those games available to me? Similar to an Xbox game. Download it on the website then it'll be in your download history for when you really need it.

How much is it without redstripe? Ain't it like 1.49?
$1.99. I just checked from the trial by clicking purchase full version. Even now that it's on sale, upgrading in-game to full still asks for $1.99

They recently announced new pricing tiers.

I'm hoping Shark Dash becomes universal. Just got it free on 1020

I thought Fifa 14 is supposed to be free. Maybe that was a limited time offer.

A few months ago, I was looking for a Killer Instinct app that showed move lists so that I could look at them without pausing my game. I didn't find any. All the Killer Instinct apps were from before Xbox One came out. They were horribly outdated. I heard making apps on Windows Phone was supposed to be easy with App Studio, so that's exactly what I did. Took maybe a couple hours to make, but most of that was testing what it would look like on my phone and changing small details. With 8.1, you are able to project your screen to your PC. I know you could before, but it was more of a slideshow and didn't look smooth at all (unless there was a way I didn't know about). Because of this, I made a video of the app and put it on YouTube. If anybody is interested in it, let me know and I can send you a link to it. You will need an App Studio account and Windows Phone 8 or 8.1, unless they changed something.

It is missing Spinal and Fulgore. If I can figure out how to publish it to the Marketplace, I'll see about adding them. I wouldn't release it to the Marketplace without them.

Note that I didn't make the move lists themselves. They were made by dav3yb at SRK. He gave me permission to use them in the app and offered to make Spinal/Fulgore several months ago. I'm hoping that offer still stands.

Anyone know if those Nokia games for select devices are still free? They never said anything about that promotion so I don't know what's going on with it. Won't have my phone ordered and delivered until the 22nd.

I'd probably pick a few up if we didn't get a bunch of free games earlier this week.

how do you get them. I'm on a Lumia icon and can't see them in the store. The direct links show unavailable on product page
Try searching for them in the Store. There will be the normal paid version and then another version that is free. Some of the titles are slightly different, but still the same game. For example Brain Challenge™ HD is just Brain Challenge for the free version.

EDIT: I'm using 1020 with 8.1, not sure if that matters.

no luck. People on wpcentral were reporting the same on the most recent comments. But you can still access them or was that just the other day?

Are there certain ones that aren't showing up? I only checked Brain Challenge and Order & Chaos last night. Just checked O&C again and free version is still there.

Looks like you were right about Fifa 14. One of the micro-transactions is on sale. Same with Tetris Blitz.
Flight Control Rocket is also part of the sale $1.99

none of them show in the store regardless of how far I scroll or what I search for. And the direct links show the page but the games are listed as unavailable. The Lumia icon was one of the phones listed that this was supposed to work for.

This is probably not the best place to ask this, but straight up: How do you guys like your Windows phones compared to iPhone and Android?

I had an iPhone5 and just last week traded it in for an HTC One M8 android phone. I'm liking the Android so far, but I've always been interested in the Windows Phone platform. I've kinda messed around with them in the store, but I figured I would ask some people that have actually had them for a while.

I've never used a higher end Windows Phone before (Just my 520) but I really like the experience coming from iOS and Android. The phone itself is very smooth with little to no lag despite the lower end hardware, and I honestly have fallen in love with Windows Phones UI. The Live title interface is great, and I just like how everything flows together in WP8.1

App Wise I'm surprised that there is a lot of apps on the platform now. There are some I'm still waiting on like my Bank App/Investor App, Vudu's app and I think somebody needs to make a CAG app for it.

Honestly I was never very happy with Android. I used a lot of different phones and I just never had a very good experience with them. I think it's because I'm not one of those people who wants to go through the hassle of "Flashing/Rooting" if I have any issues, and I had a LOT of issues caused by bad carrier updates and the like.

iOS is always a great experience, I've just gotten bored with it and I like mixing my phone OS up every upgrade.

Never used Android and did use Iphone for a few years. Windows Phone was kind of a downgrade at the time I switched, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it is much better now. I've had far less problems with WP than IP and I love achievements (although XBL games haven't been coming out as much as when I first switched).

The only problem I have with it, is that it can get hot fast and sometimes battery life drains crazy when playing games. Mostly when playing Solitaire of all games.

Yeah, i agree with what bob said.  I just switched from Android a few weeks ago actually.  The windows interface and games are smooth constantly, with android you always had to worry about killing tasks and such.  The Microsoft/nokia equivalents of the google apps work well, but some of the 3rd party apps kind of suck in comparison to the other versions.  The only thing that bothers me is that internet explorer and the other skinned browsers for WP are slower than the android browsers.  Hopefully google follows through and releases chrome like they're saying that they might

With all the talk of WP8.1 earlier this week, I've finally written a lengthy article on the update's gaming features:

How Windows Phone 8.1 Xbox Games app changes your gaming experience

Android is so much better for gaming... Just a hell of a lot more games, and many of them support cloud saves through Google Play (cloud saving is a rarity on WP). But I have an Android tablet, so I don't know what it's like to use an Android phone. Also, it's annoying that you can't adjust an Android device's volume while a game is loading up and things like that. Should be system level and uninterruptible.

Some of my apps moved around on my home screen while it was locked. Little creepy, but luckily I had a picture of my home screen so I was able to move try them back. My phone is haunted

That was one of the games I wanted to buy, but was upgrading to WP8 at the time. I'm surprised to see it return.

EDIT: In Cortana settings I found a link to sign into Bing Rewards. Is that new? Searches still weren't counting to my daily :(

Thanks for all the replies guys. I've got until Saturday to switch my phone out, so I still might mess around with the Window's phones a bit, but I guess I'll probably hold off on the platform for now. I'll be up for an upgrade in a year though, so hopefully the platform will have caught up a bit more by then.

Where exactly was that?

Where exactly was that?
Settings>(swipe) Applications> Cortana > Search Settings

Decided last night to jump right into start screen changes and get used to them. Turned on 3rd column of tiles and got a background. Really enjoying it so far, but there are a few apps I wish were transparent.
