Ever since my 360 came back from RROD repair, it's prompted me to configure the wireless network adapter (I have a pre-S Xbox). I haven't got around to it, so when I've wanted to go online I have connected via Ethernet cable (at least, I thought). The 360 Ethernet jack is connected to a switch, and then I connect a cable from my router to the switch.
Recently I disconnected the cable from the router to the switch and found that I can still connect to XBL. The "Configure Network" screen says my Wireless Mode is Off (Ethernet). Also, the IP address looks unfamiliar.
It doesn't make sense to me that I can go online with a wireless network adapter that's not configured/off and without a wired connection to my router. Is it possible the Xbox is "lying" and it's actually using wireless networking - perhaps to someone else's signal (it's not my router's IP pool)? Or am I missing something?
