Worst experience at Best Buy ever!

CAGiversary!
Well this has to top everyones worst experience with Best Buy (even bestbuy.com). I was at best buy earlier today, and was getting the MGS:TTS deal (the one with the free memory card) and I realized I forgot to bring my gamers gift coupon for the $5 off. When I picked up MGS:TTS, i saw one there right next to it. However the case was badly damaged(there was a big crack on the front) and the front slip cover was missing so I decided to take the gamer"s gift card out of the case and bring it to the cashier so I could get the $5 off. That was my first mistake, Best Buy thought I was going to steal the stupid GGC! Upon going to the cashier I realized there was a lot of best buy employees hanging around the register (I was next in line) and they made a wierd announcement which said something like BMG at register 4, coincedently this was the register I was at. I decided that something was wrong so I put the GGC down and went to an employee who worked at the videogame section and told them that I found one which was already had been opened before, and damaged and wanted to activate the card and use the coupon on the back. After I spoke to the employee I noticed there was less commotion at the store and everything turned out to be fine. Stupid best buy, worst experience ever!

well they watch that place like its a casino! I guess they thought you were trying to steal so I can kinda see their point. They are trying to protect their investments.

If they are going to freak about it, they should really just keep it behind the counter or something. I've seen them at the counter or at the videogame section, but if they are going to start hassling people they should take the proper preventive measure in the first place.

What I don't get is why they would BMG (?) you. They are stressing out for a piece of paper and an empty card that really has no intrinsic value. I know that stealing is stealing, but if they are that concerned they should be putting plastic cases on it with metal strips or something.

I undstand. But what if it was YOUR store? Would you want a " potential theif" to be caught? Most of the time by calling stuff over the intercom and more employees will cause a "potentail theif" to not steal. First thing learned by working in retail. As you can see it worked. You put down the item. Not saying you were trying to steal or anything. Put yes that actually works 90% of the time. The other you don't know that they are stealling till they beep out the door. Or they are so good they can get around that too. Just watch though now that they thought you MIGHT be stealling you will have a lot more people ask you if you need any help anytime you go into the store. (This also helps stop "potential theives" )

Wow I really didn't know that. This sucks so this means my picture or something is probably in their database forever and I could never get a job there?

the smart ones call the employees in the department and tell em to look over a person/possible thief . if they dont catch them in the act of stealing then cant stop them and ask to see their pockets or stop them at the door.

what happend to you doesnt seem like a big deal to me.

no not that serious. But many of the employess who actually care will remember. You got think they get all excited when something like that happens. The theme song from cops plays in thier heads. They think cops are going to bust in and raid the place and make you drop itmes and run and bullets and blood and guts. oops soory got a littled carried away. They tend to remember though. Anyways trust me it won't stop you from working there. I had a friend who stole from best buy like thousands and thousands of dollars. They busted him! The Next summer he worked there! The same guy who called the police and showed the taped and all hired him. Go figure! As long as you didn't get caught/ charged/ arrested/ spoken to your fine. The people who con't won't remeber you in a few days but the cash register people / low people on the totem pole might! No biggie!

Damn, thats a terrible Best Buy.. Ive had one of the best experiences with Best Buy evar.

We went on Black Friday to purchase many items and Star Wars Clone Wars on sale to 10$.. Regular price was 50$.. And we bought 2, when we paid my brother left it at the register. Then, we called in many times and no luck getting it back.. We went to the store a few days later.. And talked to the manager.. The store had sold out of the game.. So he offered us 2 games of our choosing.. Damnn, nice.. 2 Good games for the price of 20$

I agree that Best Buy should not have been so quick to prosecute a "potential thief." It's bad business. Beside the fact that the card has no value until scanned anyway, it is bad form to ever wrongfully accuse a customer until it is proven. That's part of what is wrong with the country right now. We're giving up our rights for "the better good" but I don't exactly believe big brother is looking out for our best interests. We're all suspected terrorists now. So much for innocent until proven guilty. I found a long time ago that you shouldn't argue with a customer over something trivial. You may have saved yourself a little money in someone trying to exchange an open disc, but if you are wrong, horror stories like this spread to hundreds of people. Unless the proof is there, it's better to go with benefit of the doubt.

On a semi-related note, did you know that a store doesn't have a right to force you to let them look at your receipt and the contents of your bag as you walk out? They can certainly ask you, but if you refuse all they can do is (1)accuse you of stealing and detain you until the cops arrive (at which point you would have a very good wrongful detainment case if you didn't steal anything) or (2)inform you that you may no longer shop at that store as you leave (basically that would be a trespass warning I guess - that might not fly in all states.) or (3)just let you go.

Now personally if an employee asked me to check my receipt, I would go ahead and let him. But at those big warehouse stores (like Costco) where people actually line up for the honor of having their receipt checked, I just walk right on by the line and out the door. Seems to me a shoplifter is going to do just that as well, but whatever. (Although I usually hold my receipt up as I walk by )

Whenever I try doing the GGC trick, they tell me to just pick up a new card and bring it with me to the register. They tell me it's more of a hassle to put money on it, then use the coupon AND the gift card at once. It must be a YMMV situation. I just end up going the normal route because I figure I'm bound to run into an employee without a clue (which is common there).

When I was at BB yesterday, I was approached 10 times by 4 different employees. Two tried to sell me a subscription to SI, one tried to sell me a subscription to GameFly and one just kept hanging around me making weird comments like: I should go to your house! You've got all the good games and other random things. I thought it was bad enough that they tried to make you take that survey upon entering/exiting but now they're trying to sell you random things while you're in the store. What's next?

Maybe you shouldn't steal? I would think taking something that wasn't yours (and you know youhad to pay a certain amount to get that coupon).

Why risk a lawsuit? Best Buy should be more careful. Realistically a person can walk in a store and place a CD in their jacket pockets if they want, as long as they intend to pay for it. I've done that several times so I'm not burdened by constantly carrying something around. It's called good faith. I also always go my local Walmart, grab a soda, and drink it while I browse the store, then pay for it before I leave.

Although you might get different answers from different stores, when I was in the Bestbuy in Kingston, NY I asked a bunch of questions about the GGC and GC's in general and I was told there is no minimum to the amount you have to put on it. The guy said to me "You can put 1 cent on it for now..... Every time I put at least 5 dollars on because I'd be too embarassed to put a cent on...I'm sure the idea is that they'd like you to put $20 or more on...but I've put only $5 on many GGC's at many different bestbuy's and never had a problem.....

Hmm.. .that's considered stealing? Whenever I use the GGC, I just open the case, rip off the card, and keep the cardboard back with the coupon. I just throw the case and the card back onto the shelves :?

Never had a problem.
