Worst Final Fantasy Game?

Since FF12 isn't on this list, I'll have to go with FF8. That instantly took the cake for most hated FF for me when it came out at the end of the PS2's life. Until that point it was a tie between 5 and 8. 5 gets kudos for introducing the job system, but most of the game was pretty blah for me (only ff game where I haven't at least gotten to the end boss besides ff3, which I still have yet to play the ds remake).

8 did everything but the gameplay right. Arguably the best soundtrack ever, beautiful CG which still holds up well to this day, an outstanding ending (only video game ending I can easily recall). There are many compelling reasons as to why I don't absolutely hate the game. But I have to lament that the gameplay made most of that game a chore to play through, not a memorable/entertaining experience.

This is insane for several reasons.

So I'm guessing you hated the gameplay of this game more than any other FF you played? I too wasn't a huge fan of FFVIII for perhaps similar reasons, but I do have to say I'd rank it up higher than FF1-3 (not saying they're bad games, just wasn't compelled to beat them). Gameplay is definitely a very important part of a game so if it just didn't click for you, I can certainly respect that opinion.

I really hate FF2, sooo much. Especially the bonus part in Dawn of Souls.
My second unfavorite is IV, considering it feels more like Dragon Quest, only minus the zoom spells.
Two words: Mystic Quest.

Let us never ask which Final Fantasy was the worst again.
People really need to evaluate Mystic Quest on what it was and not just be like "HURR HURR ITS NOT REAL FINAL FANTASY LOL ITS FINAL FANTASY USA SO IT SUCKS NIPPON GA SUKI DESU."

I think it's still a great game, but compared to the others, FF8 really took a dive into mediocrity after the first disc.

And boy did I love the first disc.

Anyways, FFXIII is the best for me =D

Oh, I completely understand what Square was trying to do with Mystic Quest (broaden the American market for JRPGs), and I still consider it part of FF history, regardless of how Square tries to deny it. It was just a terrible game.

Eight was the first bad FF I played, and I got to savor getting all the draw spells and all the Triple Triad cards. An RPG without real weapon shops still seems like heresy to me.

Btw, FF8 is on my tradelist for anybody who loves it / has big money XD

I actually liked Mystic Quest, and I would go back to a bunch of the gameboy Legends titles before ever picking up a single Disney / meterosexual inspired lovefest.

Not really, it's just a matter of personal taste. My best friend shares very similar opinions to me. I've been playing FF since I was 8 years old (now 23) and am a huge fan of the franchise. I just absolutely loathed 12, only kept playing the game because it was a final fantasy. And like I said, I loved everything about 8 except the gameplay. I just hated the gameplay, what's so insane about that? A lot of people I know thought that the junction/drawing system was clunky and inept.
Ok... to you, too.

Thanks for a respectful reply. And yeah, the gameplay of 8 was the the one I hated the most out of all FF games barring 12. FF1 has huge sentimental value to me, and 2 was an nes game, so I may be a bit bias in holding 8 to a higher standard for being a ps1 game. I haven't played 3 yet, so I can't comment on that. But if I had to rank my personal order:

Final Fantasy 6
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 5/8
Final Fantasy 12

And for introducing the job system comment for ff5 i made, I meant truly expanded the job system, not introduced it. An error on my part.

I think people were more going after the things that were legitimately, undeniably, factually wrong with your post than your actual opinions. Not a lot of people like FF8. I usually just pretend it flat-out never happened. Observe:

No it didn't.

No it doesn't, as you seem to have realized above.

I went with 8. It bored me to tears. I've tried a number of times to beat it...can't. It just bores me. I want to beat it, because I've beaten every FF game I've played (haven't played some of the earlier ones), but I just can't.

On the reverse, I can thank FF9 for getting me into RPGs. Before that, I thought they looked like the dumbest games on Earth. I remember trying FF7 on one of those PS Underground discs you'd get in the mail...wow. I was like, "You have to wait to attack? That's stupid." But for some reason, a relative bought me FF9 for Christmas one year. I was close to returning to it, but I decided to keep it, and it was definitely right the move. I must have beaten that game four or five times over the years.

12 was my favorate so you'll understand why 13 is my least fav. So much disappointment by taking a step back with that battle system. I hate to have to wait and the strategy isn't grinding like it should be. If 14 is anything like 12 I will be into it but I can see people not liking 12 because its so dynamic and you have to stream line everything.

I don't see how 8 was the worst, the story actually made sense and wasn't all whiny with that "I want to be forgiven" BS in every game. idk maybe the main character always wants to be forgiven. Final fantasy games always are relatable to some type of porno bondage idealism.

I liked 9 the least, but haven't played 1 or 2 ever. Not saying it was a bad game, just thought there was no build up to that last boss whatsoever and it killed it for me.

Final Fantasy 12 released in late 2006 at some point if I remember correctly. Playstation 3 came out in November 2006. I consider that to be the end of the PS2's life. I guess I should clarify by end of life, I mean when the next console comes out, not how long the system is supported with new titles. I don't see how that's facutally inaccurate?

Edit: I realize it may have read as I was saying FF8 came out at the end of PS2's life. I was referring to FF12 and didn't really disambiguate.

But yeah, as for the job system comment I just mistyped. I just think the impact that ff5 had with the job system was the strongest imprint/influence for future titles such as final fantasy tactics etc.

I haven't had much expereicne with a number of those titles on the poll list. I played 1, 2, 7, and 10.

I do believe that the Adventure and Legend games in the series are the worst because they travel so far from the Final Fantasy formula that it does not appear as much like a Final Fantasy game.

I am kind of twisted thought because some of the later game sin the series like Final Fantasy XI-XIII are entering new worlds that Final Fantasy hasn't seen before and there is not one game in the series that is like the other in more ways than through terms.

I think it was the first FF game (aside from Tactics) in North America to feature a job system (on Anthology in 1999). III didn't come out over here until 2006. The first game had classes but they weren't interchangeable like III, V or Tactics.

When was this thread made? Why doesn't it include anything after X-2?

I'll just make my own list of crap FF:

#1 - XI - Why does a completely different style of FF get a numbered release? I tried SO hard to like that game, but playing solo was worthless and that's just how I play FF.

#2 - XII - Thank you for trying to make it more like XI. Couldn't you tell that most people weren't big fans? Only REAL FF that I have yet to complete.

#3 - XIII - So far anyway. I am about 7 hours in and I feel like I have done nothing. All I have to do is hit the auto battle and sometimes switch to a new paradigm. I really feel like it's been a 7 hour tutorial so far. Hope it gets better!

After that, most FF games have their weak points, but all the rest are great games in my eyes.
why can't i vote for ff13?

X-2 was terrible.
The only thing that's terrible about X-2 is the campy girl power stuff. The game itself is a fantastic spin-off of X, and the ending sequence is worth the entire playthrough (provided you got the 100% ending).

VII for me. I started it, but I just got bored of it. I hated the whole school thing and it just didn't feel like any other FF game. Although I've never played X-2, so my opinion could change.
We should have a new thread, this is a fun topic.
Done. I made it numbered only due to the many, many spin-offs that exceed the maximum of 15 poll options. :X

It's been a while since I played VII, but... what?

EDIT: Oh. VIII. Right.

FF VII was truly truly awful. Uninteresting emo characters I never cared about, piss-poor story. Just....ugh. Will never understand people's love affair with that p.o.s. other than it was clearly their first RPG experience so out of nostalgia's sake they HAD to love it. FF VIII, with all it's own faults, was still a much better game due to a stronger and ultimately interesting storyline. At the time it helped wash that bad VII taste out of everyone's mouths. :)
