In your opinion what's the worst videogame plot.

I'm not talking about early or deliberately surreal videogame plots such as Pacman or Katamari Damacy.

For me it would have to be Killzone 2. It isn't that hard to write a by-the-numbers war video game plot but they managed to fuck it up at almost every turn.

Eh, this is kind of an iffy subject because a lot of good games, Ninja Gaiden for example, purposely don't try to be very interesting in the narrative department since all they want you to do is go around and kill crazy stuff out of revenge for whatever.

So I don't know about the worst, but I think the best would be Shadow of The Colossus. Unless were talking strictly about writing in which case I again have no idea. I heard Planescape Torment is up there.

Alot of movies do this too. Iron Eagle was pretty damn ridiculous but it was also fun and I was rooting for the hero in the end. You could pretty much watch anything with Jackie Chan, Van Damme, or Steven Seagal and it's the same way.

I'm not talking about the most ridiculous, I'm talking about the worst. Something that made you hate the hero, hate the game, or just bored the crap out of you.

That's a tough call. In recent memory the most hilariously terrible thing I've seen in a video game story was near the end of Valkyria Chronicles.

You find out that some ancient weapon was kept hidden all these years in the capital city. It's a giant spear -- so they encased it in this huge tower (the spear itself is the size of a tower).

And right when you're thinking, "that's the most outrageous thing I've ever heard" -- one of the characters says in a completely serious manner:

"Oh! It was hidden here all along! Of course, no one would think to look in such an obvious place!"

Holy god...I vomited everywhere, had to buy a new Dual Shock 3 and everything.

I've seen some rather silly and/or dumb plots, but Chrono fucking Cross is way, way up there for me as far as sheer badness and irritation goes.

I think the writers of that game made it that fucked up on purpose just so people would never ask for anything Chrono-related ever again (and look how well that worked!). As far as I'm concerned, it's not canon, la la la *sticks fingers in ears*
Metal Gear Solid 2
lmao everytime i think of that game i cant help but laugh about how great the game was to play but the story was complete shit especially the ending.

that said my choice if gow3. the first 2 games had an epic story and an amazing lead charater who you wanted to help get his revenge that is until the 3rd game turned him into a whiny hypocritical asshole and the ending was worse than that of mgs2 imo.
i thought they were going to maybe say his action were leading to the creation of religion and religious mythos but no.

The Mario games all have the exact same plot except different setting each time and they've been doing that for so long that nobody expects a plot anymore. One of these days they'll have a real story and shock all of us.

hmm I gotta say, Mario Galaxy 2 is some bull, but something really gets me when I think about Deadly premionition, I've never seen twin peaks so nothings really that funny or interesting. All the DMC games as well.

my vote is for left for dead.

mario is close second. theres the princess, there she goes, there she is, there she goes. been going through that routine for twenty years

Modern Warfare 2, it made absolutely no sense.

I don't remember hating Killzone 2's plot, though I can't say the same about the dialogue.

Gears of War 2

The COG go from trying to keep the Locusts from dropping Jacinto , then they visit a lab, hear a tape, decide to drop Jacinto themselves and then the Locusts try to stop them from dropping it. That's like the rebels suddenly trying to stop the Empire from blowing up their own Deathstar halfway through the snub fighter attack. It's nuts.
Modern Warfare 2 has a plot that is beyond laughable.
This.

The game made about as much sense as women's rights.

But in all seriousness the game's plot was baaaaad. Then again they probably got a blind monkey to write the game's plot and left everyone else to multiplayer.

As for Chrono Cross's plot. It was weird and odd, but I still liked it.

I don't see what's so bad about L4D's lack of story. It's a zombie movie made into a game, and explanations never matter in zombie movies. Only who survives, who dies and how they do it is important, and those three things are always dramatic and interesting in L4D... even without a drawn out, prewritten narrative. No mean feat, methinks.

As for a bloody awful story, I'll go with MGS2 as well. I loved Liquid Snake's triarmphant revival for its absurdity, but everything else was shit.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Final Fantasy 7 (or else I missed it). That story goes everywhere and eventually just doesn't make any sense. It's the Lost of video game plots--fairly entertaining while it's happening, but in the end makes no sense.

You must have unlocked an achievement of some sort to insult Final Fantasy VII and Lost in the same breath, and have it be somewhat justified. Bravo.

Blaster Master for nintendo was fun playing it when i was young, but really had a total WTF plot looking back on it now.

Yeah, even after playing it a few times, to this day I don't know for sure what the hell happened there. Clones ruin everything.

This...

The game starts with a person named Jason who has a pet frog named Fred who, one day, decides to leap out of his fish bowl and out the door. Fred then touches a radioactive chest and, he grows to an emormous size; Fred and the chest then fall into a hole in the earth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_Master#cite_note-Manual2-1Jason chases Fred down the holehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaster_Master#cite_note-2 which leads to a large underground cavern. There, he finds an armored tank named SOPHIA THE 3RD—a vehicle designed to battle radioactive mutants that live inside the earth. Jason mounts SOPHIA to find the whereabouts of Fred and to destroy the mutants and their leader—the Plutonium Boss.

I have to admit...I was pretty disappointed when I found that out.

Anyways, I wouldn't call it the worst, but Bayonetta is all over the place. Its like they created the game, then decided to write a story around the characters and levels.

Lester the Unlikely for the SNES. Man, that shit is garbage.
A dinosaur kidnaps a princess and a plumber has to go rescue her. Can't get dumber than that.
Unless the plumber comes to believe he's a failed clone of the dinosaur, and ,riddled with self-doubt, fails to prevent the tragic death of the princess at the hands of the megalomaniacal dinosaur who has suddenly sprouted a wing and become a centaur, whom he will later battle to the death with his (foul-mouthed) token black friend and the princess's hotter sister.

What I always think when I see Gears of War. If only Unreal still existed.

As for worst video game plot, definitely Metal Gear Solid 2. As much of a fan I am of the series, Metal Gear Solid 2 did go a little too far in the story.

A few weeks ago i was bs-ing with friends about gaming and I realized that even though I had finished hundreds of games I was only able to remember a story or two. Most of them are terrible.

Modern Warfare 2 and MGS2 are two that come to mind but one series that has continuously sucked in terms of story are the Mario games (the platformers, not the RPGs). Besides SMB2, it's been "save the princess" crap over and over again with little to no substance. Does Mario need a story? No. But does a story help make a good game better? Oh yeah.

Zelda has the same story every time too but they put some depth and variation in each game.

FF12, normally I don't give a crap about the story in games. But this was so dull and boring, I just couldn't force myself to play through the game.

FF7 gets a vote from me simply because it (and other turn-based RPGs) have to rely upon story to such a degree.

Yeah, MGS2 is off the wall crazy but it doesn't really impact the gameplay (barring the naked, cart-wheeling Raiden bits). Same story with MW2, the fun comes almost entirely from shooting your way out of or into exciting situations and seeing some jawdropping shit.

With FF7, you're selecting "Fight" into infinity only to get to another plot device that serves only to further muddy the waters. I've beaten it before, and I enjoyed the ride (maybe because it was 1997) but playing through it now makes me realize how poorly written and/or translated it is. I want a remake if only so that the damn game makes sense.

I know there's worse, but I don't feel like any dropped the ball quite like MGS2. I still occasionally wonder WTF happened and go back and play it again (not that I mind the playthrough) but some of the concepts are, to be frank, ridiculous. Ironic that it's one of my favorite games of all time.

This thread confuses me... MGS? Gears of War? Ninja Gaiden? Yea those plots (compared to movies and books) are not good. But in the game universe they are amazing. There are tons of games with no story and complete worthlessness plot wise. All this thread will turn into/already is, post the most popular game with the worst story.

So a more proper title would be: Most Popular (story) Game w/ Worst plot

Or a more interesting thread would be post the BEST Plot. *I'll throw that up as well* Or combine them for the Best/Worst plots.
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Story was getting interesting then... oops, we ran out of time I guess we'll finish this up in a few years.
Holy Crap! I totally forgot about this. I hate games with cliff hanger endings

so Soul Reaver gets my vote for that bullshit ending!

Also the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the old Infocom game); That's another game with a "to be continued" ending. Someone told me that Psi-Ops had a cliff hanger ending too.

Oh yeah, Psi-Ops had a brutal cliffhanger of an ending.
