Worth trading fat 80gb PS3 for $200?

I have an 80gb PS3 that I bought 3 years ago. A couple of months ago I started noticing the fan getting really loud and the console itself would get hot to the touch about 15 minutes into playing the game. It still works great though, but I'm worried it will get worse.

Amazon is offering a $200 gift card for trading it in in like new condition (I have the original box and manuals still). I can get a new slim one for $250, so it would be a $50 upgrade.

How much of a hassle would it be to transfer everything over?

If it has BC you might be able to sell it higher on your own, otherwise I think you should go for it. As for the transfer, you need to have them both at hand for the transfer (since you need to connect one console to the other)

I think he should go for it, but he doesn't need both at hand for the transfer. All you need is an external harddrive to make a backup. There's not much hassle at all if you go with that option.

Yeah, if you don't care about BC, then trading it in is a good deal. If you can't network the two units together, then I'd suggest getting a 3 month PS+ so you can transfer all your saves, otherwise, you'll lose the ones locked to your fatty.

No, it's not BC, so I guess I'll sign up for it and then try to get a slim before I send it in. I would wait to see what's available for Black Friday, but the trade in value would probably go down too.

Thanks for the advice guys.

cool thanks! I'm going to ask CS if they need original box, ds3, wires and all that. Shipping I'm sure will be a bit pricey.

For like new you need to include everything you mentioned. They pay for shipping (UPS shipping label) though so you don't have to worry about that.

I did this exact trade-in about a month ago and got the 320gb Infamous 2 bundle as an upgrade. Do it! The reduction in noise level is unbelievable and I appreciated getting the big upgrade in HD space, plus a good quality game. Why not trade it in now, and then upgrade to the Uncharted 3 bundle coming out on November 1?

wow $200 bucks for a PS3? that is a pretty nice deal, i'd trade mine in if I actually had the boxes and all the plastic wraps and such

My 60gb has been doing the same thing for the past month. After 15 minutes, the fan gets louder whether I'm playing a game or idle. Horizontally; the bottom right side gets really hot, but still plays fine. No freezing or game crashing either.

$200 is a pretty good deal. If you don't care for BC, definitely go for it. I'd honestly trade mine for that much but Amazon's only giving $122 for 60gb.

If you plan on keeping it though, you might want to get a CPU fan to help cool it. I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Mobile-Fan-External-Cooling/dp/B00080G0BK and I put it on the right side facing away to help draw air out of the system. I honestly don't know if that's the best placement since every review/video I've seen say this or that for the old models. While my fan still gets loud, the bottom part is about 25% cooler than before.

Here's a thread that should answer your questions about transferring - http://community.us.playstation.com/thread/611019?start=0&tstart=0

Thanks for the mini review :) I have a 500gb drive though so the size doesn't really matter.

I would wait for the Uncharted bundle, but then I wouldn't be able to transfer the data before sending it in. I think what I will do is check the day before I have to send it out to see if it's still at $200. If it is, I will cancel this trade and start a new one.

Yeah, it's weird. I would keep it, but I'm worried it will crap out and then I'll get nothing for it. I have it vertically now, but the position doesn't help at all. I put a desk fan blowing on the vents and that seemed to quiet it down, but then I have the noise from the PS3 fan AND the desk fan

Thanks for the link. I'll do some researching during lunch.

It looks like the trade in value dropped to $191 now.

Another question..The user determines the quality of the ps3. So I'm going to put it as like new so that I can get $200. Once amazon receives it, can't they just say it's not like new but in decent condition or whatever condition they determine it as? Are there guide lines or something for this?

Do it!

My 80 GB fat died after 3 solid years of usage and now it's worth nothing.

The new slim models are so much more quiet, too!

Yep, more than likely they'll knock it down to good or below. I tried to try in an iphone that was in like new condition but they rejected it. It had always had a cover and screen protector, was only used for a few months and always babied but they rejected it as Like New. Apparently it has some minor scratches on the Apple icon on the back that you wouldn't notice unless you specifically look for it in the right light.

You can have them reject it and send it back to you if they do not say it's in the condition you claim. But then they also can lose some parts or other nonsense and say that's why they're rejecting it. It's all a crapshoot.

That sucks. I have a PS3 that's in impeccable condition but who knows what amazon will do. Ah, screw it. I'll give it a shot. If they aren't going to take it as Like New then I'll ask for it back. This ps3 has a really low firmware which I know some people are looking for.

I actually got the Amazon $199 black Friday bundle for this purpose.. My old reciver took a nose dive so I went out and bought a Onkyo TX-NR809 and with the Slim I'll be able to now output Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio via bitstream. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/ps3-slim-gains-ability-to-bitstream-dolby-truehd-dts-hd-ma/
(though is this only for BluRay movies or do games do it too?)

Along with the larger HD I think it's a worthy upgrade so I don't have to mess with upgrading the 80g HD.
Though currently Amazon trade in for like new on the 80 gig mode is $134.. I should have traded it in earlier lol.

I didn't go through with the trade. I put the ps3 in a horizontal position and the fan is quiet again. I didn't want to run the risk of them denying it because of some minor scuff marks on it too. I also figured I would be losing $50 on the deal and I could come back to it next year and the price difference would still be about $50.

My new refurb went YLOD tonight when I was playing Uncharted 3, so anyway I made a post over in the trade forum about selling the replacement I'm going to get back after I send this one back, I just want a working system I can count on....

If interested in the new refurb 60GB, BC system I'll be getting in a few weeks check the thread out over there and lemme know.

If you're up to the challenge, you can try and change the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU yourself. I did this on my 60gb and it reduced the fan noise significantly. It seems difficult but if you can carefully follow directions it's a relatively simple procedure that will help keep your system cool and help prevent the YLOD.

Thanks, I might try that. I built my own computer so I'm used to working inside components.

I did a reflow with my launch system and it lasted maybe 2 weeks more before dying, not saying it wouldn't help him out, just know it's a long and tedious process and involves making sure you keep track of where everything goes back together when you have it taken apart (the darn things like a russian stacking doll when disassembled).

well I got a slim PS3 and now trying to back all my data up using the Data transfer utility and right when I get ready to send data from the fat PS3 to the Slim, right before its supposed to format the destination PS3, it's stuck at "Please wait...." how long is it supposed to stay like that?

Damn, I wish I knew about Amazon Ps3 trade-in in Oct. I would of trade-in my PS3 reflow (yloded) system. Way better than the $120 I got at gamestop.

Now i'm just freaking out about no off switch on the PS3 Slim and why its so damn quiet.

A reflow is more of a temporary fix after the damage has already been done while changing the thermal compound is a way to prevent the damage from occuring in the first place. I've also found the fan noise and system heat depend a lot on room temparture. Bottom line is you want to keep the PS3 cool and changing the thermal compound is a great way to do that for the older models. And you're absolutely right that it is a long a tedious process but that's why I initially said he needs to able to follow directions very carefully if he wants to do this.

Do you have an enclosure to remove the HDD from the fat to the slim? I'd recommend doing it that way.

But it shouldn't hang as you've mentioned, it should start after its calculated how much it has to convert the files into 4GB partitions then sends them over and reconstructs them on the new system.

I had like 25-30 GB to back up and it took 2 1/2 hours, but it didn't hang on any part so you just might want to start fresh and try it again or use the other method I mentioned (also look in the HDD upgrade thread here in the PS3 section for more info, that's what I used it was very helpful)

Well my 80G was almost full. Took a while to start but I think it took almost 3 hours altogether. Evertyhing seems to be working now but for some reason on my main Sinistar83 PSN account it won't let me activate the video portion of the PS3 on the slim.. Says I have to deactivate on another system but I did deactivate my game and video on my fat PS3. Not sure whats going on.

That'll tell you how much is activated on what system, etc. I had to use it to deactivate both of my dead systems on my accounts, and it'll tell you how many activations you have for your video content (which isn't many btw) You might have to call Sony to get this fixed.

You probably got your answer already but I say you should definitely trade it in. BC isn't worth a damn anymore. I'm sure you must have already played all the games you wanted from the previous generation. PS2 is long dead and all the games that are worth replaying are coming back in HD collections.

Thanks. I did not know about this feature on the website. I already called Sony over the weekend and they reset the video activation.. I just found the settings you mentioned under Account > Media and Devices and it shows I currently have 1 Video Activation, 3 Game Activations, 3 Music Activations, and 0 Comic Activations.
I didn't know about the Music and Comic activations as the PS3 XMB didn't have those options. Also it looks like it won't let me clear any activations on that page except for "deactivate all" of the Game type.

Since I only have 1 PS3 system now and don't gameshare on my main account at all do you think I should just do the deactivate all feature, then reactivate my new slim so I'll only have the Slim activated on my account? Or will it not let me reactivate the same PS3 system I deactivated?

Not a problem and thank Frisky since he's the one who first mentioned it, I'm just passing along the helpful hint.

My recommendation, do the reset, (I need to do this with my foreign accounts since my other systems have died and when I get the new refurb back in a couple weeks it pushes me up to 4 activations on my non-US accounts, which is unacceptable since I've only owned one system technically, but have gone through enough replacements that it added up sadly.

A note though, you can only do this once every 6 months (otherwise you'll have to call Sony to have them take care if it, so keep that in mind). Good luck. ;)

I disagree with that assessment, there are many great games not offered for D/L as PS2 classics or in an HD collection. It's a nice functionality that is very convenient to have and sucks having it taken away.

And if you're like any CAG on here, I'm sure we all have backlogs enough that we haven't yet played every great game from the last gen (and some of us even further back that that...)
