As per the question in the title:

Would John McCain make a good presidential candidate in '08 for Republicans?

Would Hillary Clinton be a good choice for the Democrats?

Would either one be good for the country as a whole?

Your thoughts and opinions please

I don't like either, but as I've said before, those two running against each other would represent a dramatic shift for the nation, culturally, away from the nutcase extreme-right politics that have dominated the national discourse for the past 6 years.

McCain can pander to the right, but he can just as easily do so to the left (or more easily than other Republicans).

Hillary can run if she wants to make sure that we have 12 years of Republican rule in the White House. It disgusts me that 20% of the American public won't vote for any woman candidate on principle, but that's the reality of the world we live in. No way would I send out any female candidate, let alone one so horrendously despisd, as Hillary.

Agreed.

Where do you get that number that 20% of the American public won't vote for a woman? Assuming that virtually all women would consider voting for someone of the same gender, that would mean nearly 40% of men would refuse to vote for a woman, a number I find far too high to believe.

McCain would be a solid choice. He has solid military credentials, is generally viewed as someone who means what he says (including myself) and has shown he is willing to cross partisan lines to cooperate with other moderate Democrats. I would love to see a McCain/Giuliani ticket. Hilary Clinton as President, on the other hand, would be a nightmare come true.

It was a poll I overheard on CNN some months back. Sorry I don't have a specific source. I was incredulous of that result at first, but I have to think that, in modern politics, the only prominent woman is Hillary, so the high % could be from people interpreting "female candidate" as "Hillary Clinton."

Despite that, the same poll showed even more people wouldn't vote for Hillary; depending on in what order the questions were asked, the female candidate question could be representing resentment towards Clinton.

Given the political climate, I think Republicans would do very well to nominate McCain (or Giuliani, or both as was mentioned). They are the only real candidates in the race that can legitimately claim not to be well to the right of the average American, and thus they represent the best Republican hopes for winning. Not sure about them getting nominated, though, since extremists in both parties tend to be a much larger portion of primary voters comparatively and thus have much more power in determining each major party nominee.

Hillary Clinton actually has made some progress in getting viewed more as moderate, but her name alone leaves a very bad taste in a large percentage of Americans' mouths. She'll be a tough sell even if Democrats continue to have an electoral advantage, but she's become (barely) electable in the right circumstance. Again, though, would she be nominated? Far leftists aren't very happy with her war stance, and again these are the folks that matter a great deal in the primaries.

Of course, personally I don't really care for any of these candidates, so that is hopefully a non-biased view.
