Would this work?

Anyone know if this little cheap ass plan will work?

I'm buying a PS3 sealed in box 80g machine from an employee of WalMart who got it in an employee contest. He has a gift receipt with it (which I want for warranty purposes as much as anything else).

Can I take it in to the store and exchange it for one of the bundles? Its the same price...?

Thoughts?

Sounds like something that would be handled on a store-to-store basis, given the circumstances.

I'd say give it a shot. Maybe you could return it, get the cash or store credit, and get the other ps3 at a later time, as to not appear to be doing anything shady? I don't know.

Im wondering if I can just spin it as 'you have this new bundle with a game I would like - I got this as a gift and haven't opened it yet. Can I just exchange it?'

They may not, since exchanging a game-free console for a console with game is not a straight-across exchange, but you have nothing to lose, so give it a go.

I think my plan then would be to tell them to refund me - give me store credit or whatever...then I can go and buy it myself. But who knows? Worth a shot.

Either way, its still a decent price for a brand new, still under warranty 80G

If they are the same price, I would say try to exchange for the bundle. If they aren't the same price, get store credit and pay off the extra.

Does the gift receipt show what they PAID(in this case, $0) for the console? I ask because when I had to send in my PS3 for in-warranty service in April they said I needed a receipt which showed what I PAID for it.

If the gift receipt is just a simple receipt that says '80gb PS3' with a barcode for them to scan with no amount for it listed, they may deny warranty service.

Plus, I wonder if the store that gave it out as a prize maybe zeroed it out in the system or otherwise marked it so it can't be returned?

You could run into quite alot of trouble for trying to return what was essentially a free system which was given to someone else.

But the fact that they gave them a gift receipt shows that they anticipate that the winner may have needed to return it for some reason. I'd definitely ask first before returning.

Why would they give him a receipt in the first place though if they were going to zero it out? Particularly a gift receipt of all things? I know for inventory purposes, they need to scan it out...but it seems to me, why give him the receipt then?

I don't have a clue why they'd give him a receipt for it. You could try the return, but don't be disappointed if they deny it.

Personally, I'd like to know what you paid for said PS3, since I was itching to find a PS3 for under MSRP. I paid $320 for my 40 gb after using some FYE credit I had and that was too much imo.

So much for that idea. Met with the guy and he couldn't find the receipt. Said his wife threw it away and he'd look for it. I told him I didn't want it without the receipt, plus I couldn't tell if someone had really carefully removed the seal on the outer box or not.

Made me nervous even if he was really nice and prompt and called back a lot. So I told him if he found the receipt to call me. Still on the hunt.

And he was asking 300.

Yeah, but I wasn't even -that- sure it was actually unopened? The seal looked decent, but not perfect? Wasn't sure if it was just because it was warm, or if it was opened at some point and I was going to get a brick.

He won't let you test it out before you buy it?

Yeah, for any system, I'd test it before I bought it, unless they specifically said it didn't work.

I'm totally with you for backing out of this deal. Could be stolen, you'd never know.

In part I was buying it for the receipt for the possibility of returning it and getting the bundle I really wanted - I'm wanting MLB 2009. So without the receipt, I have no warranty and no possibility of getting a game at that price. So the cost to me just went up and I lost my protection in the event that it had been opened and he just gave me a brick.

He seemed like a nice guy and on the level, but I was offered something for 300 that he couldn't provide. Still...I want a PS3! Just don't want to pay 399 for it.

Flipping games, movies and cd's for store credit might be a good option for you, since right now FYE has a hell of a trade deal going on(45% total extra credit) and they usually give a bunch more than Gamestop and many other stores.

There's a thread about it on the Video Game Deals board, in case you want to check it out.

That's how I picked up my 40 gb PS3 for a hair over $300 in April of 2008.

Of course, last fall I had about 700-800 in GS credit, due in no small part to the bonus credit deal they had going then as well as the $4 last gen game sale going on from Hollywood Video at that time.

Funny thing is, that $700-800 in credit only cost me around $150 to make. There's some more food for thought for you if you're looking for a way to get a PS3 on the cheap.

No one does  that's why I don't have one yet.

I agree with CheapestGamer. Try flipping for store credit if you really want to save on a PS3
