Trade-in deals, parental allowance and working hard are all viable methods of saving money towards PSP, which launched today in the US, but wouldn't selling your car be a heck of a lot easier? That's what 16-year-old gamer RJ Laroza of San Francisco, CA thought, too. Laroza sold his first car, a 1988 Volvo 744 Turbo, to a used car dealership for $600 towards a PSP.
Laroza claims the PSP hype convinced him to pull the maneuver, and his friends' plans to pick up machines only convinced him further. "I needed some fast cash, and had a crappy car to sell" he said. He should be picking up his PSP at a local Target right about now, but brushes away speculation the retailer will sell out before he arrives. "I will cut the kid in front of me if it makes a difference," he jokes. "I will not allow my self to sell my old car and not get the PSP when I want it."
A PSP isn't nearly $600, but Laroza plans on shelling out for a 1GB memory stick and some games, though he now says Ridge Racer will be his sole purchase, saving cash for later releases. What about the rest of the money? That's dedicated to the extravagant McDonalds breakfast of 4 apple pies, 2 Egg McMuffins, 1 extra large coffee, 2 orange juices, and 14 packets of ketchup Laroza planned for himself.
There is, however, the whole question of future transportation. Luckily, he just happens to have a Lexus RX 300 sitting around, waiting to be used. Originally, Laroza denied having another car for laughs, but fired back to online folk when "people mocked me for owning a shit car."
Many gamers' wallets have been stretched thin thanks to the PSP's extensive launch line-up, and while Laroza's dedication is unique, he's just one of millions eager to usher in the release of Sony's handheld.
Did he get a good deal or is he an idiot?
