WoW can you have more than one player per CD code?

My question is do you have to pay extra for more than one character or is it when you sign-up you get to have multiple characters in World of warcraft

With one CD key you can have one account with up to 8 characters. All the characters can be on different servers too.

That's incorrect. One WoW key allows you to have up to 50 characters over five servers. You can have up to 10 characters per server.

I think only FFXI charged for extra characters back in the old days... No idea how it is today though.
