As the title says, I am brainstorming for ideas on a topic and thesis for a human sexuality paper. Paper is due on March 31st. Currently, these are the ideas I have:

  • The effect that the United States' sexually charged media has on developing children
  • Evaluating critically and objectively both sides of the argument on abortion
  • Examine the effects that drug/alcohol use have on healthy sexual functioning
  • Examine what exactly determines the line between sexual norms and sexual deviancy in our society
I'd like to get a topic selected by this Thursday (the 25th) so I can start digging into some research and possibly taking my own surveys. Input is appreciated, and I am also open-minded to look at any other possible topics/theses you all might recommend. Thanks.

The Power of Tits

No seriously (although my topic could actually be made into a decent one if worded differently), of your ideas, I like the 3rd and 4th one. The first two are really overdone. Although drawing the line between "sexual norms" and "sexual deviancy" could prove to be difficult because it's going to vary greatly depending on culture, religious beliefs, etc. I guess you could break it down to actual laws (ie. sodomy being illegal before Lawrence v. Texas.), but that would probably be a difficult topic without being biased in some way.

That's really not a lot of time, how long does it have to be?

Anyway, go to scholar.google.com and start looking at articles that interest you. That makes for a good start.

The research on this never seems to be unbiased, but I'm not really an authority. Otherwise you can probably get plenty of stats and things to formulate conclusions.

Evaluating critically and objectively both sides of the argument on abortion

Couldn't you just pick one side? Covering both seems like a lot of work, and you're going to find more than enough research and examples and so forth for either camp.

Examine the effects that drug/alcohol use have on healthy sexual functioning

Dunno how clear cut this one is. Affecting physical stuff (erections)? Causing relationships to suffer due to increased communication problems? Sperm counts? Are you going to do a lot of substances and compare them, or just focus on one?

Examine what exactly determines the line between sexual norms and sexual deviancy in our society

This one seems too vague, since there's far too much to consider - geography, heritage, generational gaps, etc. If anything you could examine one particular taboo subject and go from there, since covering several just sounds daunting.

How about anti-homosexual congressmen being closeted? Plenty of examples, and you tie it into their voting histories, how their lives changed after the facts were out in the open (did their wives leave them, did they continue to vote the same way, did they get voted out at next election), etc.

You could go after recent scandals and how they affect people, such as Tiger Woods, but I'm guessing others have this idea. I.e., why do people react so poorly to them, why are celebrities held to higher standards, why does it seem selective because certain celebrities are given a pass on this, etc.

You could examine Chatroulette and how it may or may not be some kind of sexual outlet.

What about sexualization in children's toys and other products?

Tackle laws that get kids who send pictures of themselves to other kids put onto sexual predators lists, thereby potentially ruining their lives. I'm talking about high schoolers, in case that isn't obvious.

Subliminal sexual advertising on soda cans is always fun, among other products. I just remember soda cans being a big perpetrator.

Usage of sexually-themed news stories in order to gain ratings. One station is particularly bad about this, but I don't want to send this thread into a downward political spiral. Then you can just watch TV news shows (local, cable, national, etc) and call it research. Hell, compare it to independent news sites, international news stations, etc, and see how they all stack up.

Just some suggestions. Get mykevermin in here.

or:

  • why women always think they're right, even when they're wrong
  • women and their erratic hormonal behaviors
  • are women really needed beyond reproduction and lap-dances?
  • marriage, it's a freaking trap!

there's your A++, and you're welcome

ladies, please send your hate mail to my consigliere above, javeryh.

Why are people so addicted or attracted to this junk. That would make a great story because it's a question I ask all the time. To see people throw their money or lives away just for sex makes zero sense.

Hmmm....a Human Sexuality class and your location says Central PA. I had a Human Sexuality class when I was in undergrad in Central PA. Are you at Juniata College?

I don't know how easy it would be to find stats but maybe how sexuality has changed since the internet took over. Such as threesome percentages and basically anything else you would want to check out or add.

n8rockerasu: As far as the sexual norms paper, I was going to focus on modern western civilization, specifically the sexual norms in America. The religious recommendation would give me some good talking points, considering most religions frown on all sexuality outside of reproduction.

seanr1221: The paper length is anywhere between 4-6 pages. I tend to slack off a good bit til the last minute, but once I sit down and start typing I can usually bust through a paper of that length in about 2-3 hours. I'll check out the scholar.google.com page as well.

Strell: Thanks for the input and extra topic ideas. The details you listed for each possible paper are giving me some concrete ideas to focus on.

javeryh: thanks for the input.

Mospeada_21: Gave me a good laugh. Interestingly, earlier in the semester we looked at whether or not men are really needed in society considering womens' increasing financial independence, in vitro fertilization, sperm banks and other such "artificial" impregnation methods, as well as the continued striving of genetic scientists to successfully clone a human. Definitely a scary day in class.

Dpsx7: Are you referring to the study of human sexuality, or are you talking about how people (primarily men) spend so much time and money surfing the web, buying pornography, calling up escort girls, etc?

austenwithane: That's not a bad topic in and of itself, and I've asked myself that same question many times. Why do we insist on biting our tongues with something as natural and normal as sex while we have no problem showing body parts flying everywhere, people getting chopped up and have tv shows centered around violence.

tholly: I am currently attending HACC, working towards a transfer to Shippensburg in the fall.

icp_00_111: Good topic idea- although are you referring to how real-life sexual interaction has changed as a result of the internet, or are you suggesting evaluating how the internet has caused a huge industry for the porn market?

pureheat101: I had not even thought of that as a potential topic, but it would definitely be interesting to find some statistics that relate to it.

Thanks for the input everyone. As I said above, I'm open to any suggestions/additions on the ideas I originally have, and any new topics you want to suggest I will happily take a look at.

YES. Watch "This Film Is Not Yet Rated".

You could do explore the concept of statutory rape, particularly when both parties are underage. You could also examine the effect of children hitting puberty younger (it's documented to have dropped years over the past couple centuries) where it relates to children themselves, how adults/people older than them view them as interests for sexual activity etc.

Hit me up in the PM if have anything I can answer. Ive had years of nursing school and nursing experince, mental health, psychology, rape investigation and some first hand knowledge of women and sex hehe.

I've decided on a topic of evaluating the underlying causes of paraphilias and potential treatment methods involved with them. Thanks again to everyone for giving me input and additional topic ideas.

gargus, I'll keep that in mind as I progress through the writing of my paper.
