My PS2 Finally Crapped Out On Me. It will no longer read blue discs which annoys me. I have it placed vertically as it won't read anything horizontally. I've tried the Laser Cleaning Disc (Its worked before). And I've done the "diagnostic" option. I am not eligible to have it fixed for free by Sony because it is opened and modded. Should I try to get it repaired, taking it in a store or trying to repair it myself if it doesn't require soldering. or just trading it in toward a new one? And I have the HD so I need an old model ps2. Can someone help me please? I'm around NYC. Please give me some shred of advice or a direction.

You could try taking it to J&L down in China town by th Elizabeths street mall, they did repairs on old Playstations... but their prices had a tendancy to suck balls. But it;s worth atleast getting an estimate from them.

Yeah You're probably better off taking it there unless they're an authorized sony repair center that might remove the mod. $40 is like half the price I'd expect to hear from J&L (but only because I think they're pure bastards).

I'm pretty sure authorized repair centers know about the wire mod. But if it's not one you'd probably be safe.

have you tried cleaning the lens manually? as in opening it and wiping it with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Has worked for me numerous times, and even shortened loading times!

They'd never let him have his system back without removing the mod. They're required to remove it because it's not standard component of the system. I asked back when I had the original playstation with a mod chip and thats what they told me.

"It's not supposed to be in there."

Take it out to the driveway and run it over in your car. My friend did that with his when it refused to play GTA:SA, but make sure you have the money for a PStwo to replace it when you do. It's fun to see it break into many, many pieces.

You could try adjusting the voltage of the lasers. Depending on what model it is, that might be easy to do or nearly impossible to do; I adjusted the voltage on my PS2 when I had the same problem, and it was easy. Works fine years later too. I tried to do that to my friend's PS2 though when he had DREs and I ended up f'ing it up even more than it already was.

Hey it's sony... wat can you expect...???

I gone through 4 PS2 system.... I'm on my 4th one...

2 of the PS1 system and

had to exchange my PSP twice, cause of dead pixel...

it's funny casue I never had any problem with Nintendo: from Super Nintendo, N64, Gamecube or Gameboy Unit... or Sega System or Microsoft for that matter....

Does Sony actual not care..... or is this the reason why Sony has manage to sell over 50 million PS2 unit... because peoiple had to buy their system more then once.. LOLZ..

I think its more the mechanism that holds the discs rather than the laser, ps2 cd games will spin really fast and you can hear it wobble a little and then it won't load or if it does it will very slowly and then when i take it out, it will have more scratches than it had when I put it in

Now seriously if people ever tell me again that people buying 1-5 PS2's hasn't added to there sell-through count heads are going to roll.

People buying 1-5 PS2's hasn't added to their sell through count.

Bring it. :)

The point that you might be missing here though Jkam is that if he hadn't modded his system he'd be elligable for a free repair, not that he has to buy a new system right now anyway. When you mod you run these kinds of risks. I say go ahead an pay the 40 bucks for a repair and get it out of the way (aslong as it's not an authorized repair shop) or find the store in chinatown and check out their price (they put in mods so I doubt they'd take them out during a repair).

Not everyone goes through several PS2s to get a working one, some people just wear their's out and if they're rich enough to actual go and blow the money to buy a second system costing over a hundred bucks without looking for a cheaper solutions (read "free" or a repair shop) then more power to em.

No, but its $40 for labor + cost of parts, and my ps2 has worked fine modded for the past 3 years, I just don't know if it will be worth it in the long run to just get it repaired.

Well then that's really up to you then. Only you can decide how much it's worth to you to keep using but personally if I'd invested in it like you did with both the mod and HD I'd do it or atleast if I felt comfortable with opening it try to fix it myself like mrDriller did. But that's just me. You might get a decent trade for it from someone willing to fix it themselves.

Try this...

Call 1-800-345-Sony

Tell them you have a disc read error problem.

See what they say. There is currently a class-action suit pending against them for this error and I have heard, quote the heard, that they will replace these for free for the current time being.

Anyone checked into this within the last month or so?

And if I they won't I'll post the step by step method of fixing this that will work on 95% of those disc read error systems.

I'm pretty sure you can adjust the mechanism that holds the disc as well, if that's the problem. There's a white gear on the inside of the PS2 that looks like a gear wheel or something, and when you move it clockwise/counter-clockwise, it increases/decreases the distance between the laser and the disc. At least I think that's how it works. If you're getting scratches on your disc, the distance is probably to low.

There's a more detailed description here:

When I was having DRE's, I pretty much tried everything; cleaned the laser, blew out the dust, and I tried this also, and it didn't work for me, but then again I probably had a different problem then you do.

It's worth a shot, I can tell you from experience that if you mess around with that wheel, it's pretty easy to get it back to the way it was, so you're not going to make it worse.
