Yes! I thought I would have to wait a month or 2 but ATT announced that ANYONE eligible for upgrade in 2010 can get the phone at contract price!

It depends on what format is used to record them. Videos from my camera that does 1080i, and my previous cameras that did 720p take up less space than those from my old ass cameras that just did 640x480.

720p is 25mbps, but depending on what type of formatting and compression the phone uses it can be less. a 3 minute video you might be looking at several hundred MB. (at least according to google)

My prediction is that Apple will launch with another carrier in the US when LTE hits. Verizon is deploying LTE at the end of this year. Verizon said no iPhone in the "immediate future." AT&T is extending early upgrades to anyone who's upgrade would normally be in 2010 and also just happens to have upped their early termination fee to $350.

IMNSHO, this points to an iPhone verizon launch later this year or early next year.
 
Checked with the kid I know, he actually has T-Mobile.. my mistake, not that I didn't believe you guys, you all know more than me.
 
im gonna have to wait for reviews. If the antenna improves the 3g connection / dropped calls I might stay w/ at&t. If not ill just transfer over to verizon on a pos phone to save some cash & wait for the LTE iPhone.

i hope they improved the phones ability to keep a call when going from 3G to Edge but I probably use my phone to talk the least out of all the other stuff I do with it.

I'm a little confused. All these websites say if you jumped into the iPhone bandwagon late with the 3GS, you can upgrade to iPhone 4 early. But the 3GS came out in June 2009 which means my contract doesn't expire until June 2011. Does that mean I can or can't upgrade this year?
 
They ammended their statement to include anyone eligible for an upgrade in 2010. I think that is around six months prior to your contract's expiration date.
 
From what I gathered it depends who you are in the phone contract. I'm on my parents family plan, my line only costs 9.99 before data. Let's face it, AT&T doesn't care about me. I'm not eligible for the upgrade. However, if I was the main number on the bill, I most likely would be eligible to upgrade.
 
I have AT&T but it's for my Blackberry at work (my name is on the account and I get reimbursed monthly which is total bullshit but whatever). My initial 2 year contract is up in January 2011 I think - can I switch the account to the new iPhone and give up my Blackberry?

i believe that youre eligible for an upgrade several months prior to your contract actually being up.

Iphone users are normally eligible 18 months after they've purchased the phone (this is because the cost of their plans causes AT&T to consider them premium users). If you purchased on day 1 and your date is being pulled back 6 months, that means all the day 1 3GS buyers can be day 1 iPhone 4 buyers.
 
Checked my eligibility and it looks like I can do a full upgrade in March 2011 (I signed a 2 year contract in July 2009). Probably isn't worth it since I'd rather wait 3 months and get the next iPhone revision in June 2011. From what I gather, if I wanted to upgrade now I'd have to cough up $100 and pay $299 instead of $199 for a base iPhone 4.

No, the premium is $200. $199 to $399, $299 to $499.

I wonder if we'll need an AT&T account to get the no commitment price this time around. I had to go to several stores last year before I finally found one that would sell me a 3GS without having to sign up for anything.

Okay, so I have a 3GS currently, and will not be eligible for an upgrade. However, my mother will be eligible for an upgrade, so is there a way that I could just buy the $199 iPhone 4 under my mom's contract upgrade, and then when it comes in the mail, I just activate it under my own number? Also, would my mothers old phone still work?

All you have to do is swap SIMs when you get the phone. Since it is MicroSIM, you can either cut your current SIM card to fit (tutorials out there), or go to an AT&T store and request a new one, which they'll give you for free. I've done all this before myself, no issues.

Thats what I plan to do. My grandma has actually been wanting to get a cell phone lately so I figured I'd add her to my plan and grab the Iphone 4. She won't get my 3GS due to the fact that shes not that tech literate so I could just pick up a cheap phone that just makes calls with big numbers on it.

As far as WWDC goes my gf is watching the keynote right now. I can't believe how many times Jobs asks the bloggers and press there to turn off wifi so he can show off the new features. It became rather annoying to hear especially during the call.
 
I don't understand why the price isn't just $299 (for the 32GB) for a new iPhone with a 2 year commitment. Why does it matter if you are an existing customer or not?
 
Because if you are an existing customer you are either in contract or not. If you aren't in contract (or within the time frame allowed to upgrade) you have to pay the early upgrade fee which is basically the fee for terminating your contract early but staying with them which is $200. If you aren't a current customer/in contract (or able to upgrade) they give you the subsidized price of the phone since they will lock you into a new contract. Gotta look at it from their point of view. No matter what they get the good end of the deal.

Exactly. They are just being dicks to their existing customers - it might make sense financially since a certain percentage will upgrade no matter what but it doesn't make sense for business relations long-term. Maybe they just don't give a shit since they are so successful. It would seem to me that they should actually be rewarding existing customers with lower prices - like an upgrade should make the iPhone $50 cheaper with a 2 year commitment (extension) for existing customers.
 
I mean, if that were the case, people could hypothetically buy a 32GB 3GS for $299, then go back in a few weeks and sign a two year extension (which is really a one month extension) to get a 32GB 4 for $299. That's a $400 loss for AT&T. What a dick move.

I'm thinking about switching to the 200MB data plan since I average around 125MB per month. If you are grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, does that mean it will end as soon as your contract is up?

I like the idea of having unlimited because I signed up when it was offered, but will I lose it anyway as soon as I get the iPhone 4 or when my current contract is up? If that is the case, I'm thinking about just switching to the cheaper data plan asap.

I don't understand. That person would have spent $600 on two phones inside of a month and be locked in for 2 years. How is this bad?

From what I've gathered, as long as you stay with ATT and an iPhone, you keep the unlimited plan if you want it, even if you sign a new contract or get a new phone. That was my understanding of it, anyway.


After getting a clear answer on the early adoption thing... I apparently can pay $299 for one now, or wait 2 months (September) and get one for $199. Gee, wonder which one I'm gonna do? :lol:

AT&T claims they need the life of that contract to recoup the loss they sold they phone at to get you to sign up. Without knowing what AT&T actually pays for the phones, it's difficult to tell just how much time it actually takes.
 
So, for someone who has upgraded their iphone before, how do I got about transferring my contacts/apps/data from my 3G to the 4, if I decide to get it? Is it as easy as synching the iphone 4 to my computer?

You have two options.

1) Create a backup of your current iPhone and restore from this backup.

2) Simply sync your new iPhone with all of your contacts/apps, etc. iTunes keeps all of that stuff so long as you regularly sync for phone with it. (Do a final sync before you switch the phone. Make sure you select it so that everything from the phone will sync to iTunes). Then you just plug in the new phone and sync with your stuff.

I recommend 2 because it's more of a "fresh install."

I need to do a full system format but don't want to lose my contacts. For some reason my photos are messed up and my songs keep skipping. Is it possible just to backup the contacts?

Because that person only spent $600 on two phones that would've cost over $1,500 without a contract (my 3GS was $760 after taxes), and should be locked in for four years instead of two.
