Aw man - so I tested out my Brawl Stick this weekend. There are some problems recognizing diagonals. It's not immediately apparent, but if you do something like holding 4 and moving down to the 1 position, the stick will continue to register as 4.
Not sure if I should buy a Sanwa joystick part to place it, or just save up for a TE. Seems like it's not worth the time and money to get a replacement directly from Amazon or Mad Catz.

Not bad. I hate the artwork too but am probably too lazy to do all that scraping. Thinking about going with Focus Attack. Still, it feels weird to pay $23+ shipping just for a replacement stick, almost the cost of the thing itself! (Not to mention another $22 if I want to do the buttons as well)
I don't suppose there's any chance that the stick needs to "break" in and that it might get any better on it's own?

Or if there's anything else I can do?...
There's no break-in period for these sticks. Only thing over time it'll do is loosen up a little (just barely) due to the spring. Check all the connections (harnesses & wires) just to be sure though. If that doesn't work then yeah, unfortunately, you're SOL. I have an extra stick (not the whole case; Madcatz 2nd gen; brand new) if you want it for $14 shipped (PM me).
You can call Madcatz directly & ask what they can do assuming you're still within the warranty period. If that gets you nowhere then just save up & wait for a sale on a Sanwa-based bigger stick. NewEgg & Amazon randomly has Hori & Madcatz TE sticks on sale for $90 - $100 shipped. Usually right before a major tournament, Madcatz online store (GameShark) will have a sale with a promo code for around the same price.
You're comparing apples to oranges since you got that WWE Brawlstick on clearance for $30 when it was originally $80. Paying $20 - $25 (plus shipping) for a Sanwa/Seimitsu stick is the norm (unless you want the all-new silent Sanwa stick which is $60+). Same goes for either company's buttons (a set of 8). Lowest I've ever seen sticks from either company is $20 - $23. The same for 8-buttons by either. I prefer 6-buttons for my arcade sticks so I usually just plug the last 2 up.
I highly recommend Focus Attack! Excellent prices & prompt shipping service. Tell him Nucking Futs! from SRK sent you, he'll take good care of you.
You should mod it, it's pretty easy if you don't change the artwork, but I couldn't stand the original art, so I swapped it out for a P4 Arena art. Also got the Sanwa buttons and joystick.
Really liked how my fightstick turned out considering it was my first time modding anything ever >_>

I could care less for swapping the artwork but to each their own. BTW, looks good!
So does this stick only work for WWE or could I use it for mortal kombat/tekken?
Yes, you can use this stick for MK & Tekken but I don't recommend it for MK. If you're use to playing MK in the arcades (back in the day) with the center block button then it'll be a PITA to use this stick but not impossible.
