Prepare to Relive or Redefine History with WWE Legends of Wrestlemania

May 06, 2008

THQ Inc. and JAKKS Pacific, Inc. today announced that WWE Legends of WrestleMania is currently in development for the Xbox 360 and the PLAYSTATION3. Joining the distinguished WWE SmackDown/SmackDown vs. Raw franchise, which has shipped more than 37 million units worldwide since 2000, WWE Legends of WrestleMania is scheduled for release in March 2009 to coincide with the annual pinnacle of sports entertainment, WrestleMania 25, in Houston, Texas.

"We have generated significant year-over-year growth in key global territories with WWE-licensed videogames, including tremendous success with the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw franchise," said Peter Matiss, vice president, global brand management, THQ. "The development capabilities afforded by next generation hardware, combined with our established history and deep understanding of fighting videogames, allow us to leverage the strength of the WWE brand to further extend our leadership in the fighting videogame genre and bring this new property to market."

"JAKKS Pacific is pleased to introduce a new WWE videogame property to the fighting genre," said Nelo Lucich, senior vice president of interactive, JAKKS Pacific. "The WWE SmackDown vs. Raw franchise has captured a collective audience of WWE fans, game enthusiasts and casual players, and we are confident that WWE Legends of WrestleMania will be poised for great success."

Oh, man, I'm totally excited about this.

I suspect they're going to use the Smackdown Vs. Raw game engine.

Think of it as the easy critique of Madden football: "ROSTER UPDATE!"

But with a roster that may well include the Ultimate Warrior, Hogan, Demolition, Jake the Snake, Razor Ramon and Diesel (or as The Outsiders), and with hopefully classic WWF/WCW/ECW rings and settings.

If you look at the WWE "Classic Superstars" line of figures, every one of those guys is fair game for this title (due to being signed with WWE or Jakks Pacific for the figure production, and Jakks is a credited producer on these games). This includes the WCW guys they've put out figures for, the ECW guys, and even people who have never been (mostly) in the WWF, like Bruiser Brody.

Aww, Bruiser Brody in a video game. Holy crap!

I think you're getting your hopes way too high, but I would love it if that happened. It would be amazing.

Im going to get this game... just needs to have create a superstar and custom soundtracks (or a feature where you can use your own music as entrance music)

There's no doubt about that: given the 'legends' in games thus far, I think we're gonna be treated to those guys at the least: Slaughter (eh), Piper (ok), Eddie Guerrero (ok), Bret Hart (eh), and the Hogan types.

I think it's unfortunate that the one dude this game should absolutely have, Macho Man Randy Savage, is almost assuredly not going to be in it.

It's not coming out until March, so I'll try not to get hyped up too early. But, like everyone else says - if they pick the right roster this could be epic.
