WWE Legends of Wrestlemania - Out now! Buy it or the Warrior will lecture you!

From JRs new blog:

Yours truly worked several hours Friday night on the upcoming THQ produced video game featuring amny of the greatest the legends ever of the WWE. I presented the THQ rep a J.R.'s BBQ truckers cap, our $9.99 red neck special which is available here in our store, and he was most appreciative. Hey, some folks collect caps, what can I say? The creative on this game is being kept under wraps as it relates to all the amazing stars that will be featured. Nontheless creative fans will be able to book some of the greatest, dream matches ever. We are slated to do two more days of voice overs next week. To tell you that I am simply having a blast doing audio bytes for these guys would be a major understatement. This is the game that will likely encourage me to get video game friendly.

This game is coming out in 10 weeks, and we still don't have a great deal of information on the title. Fewer than 10 confirmed roster members have been listed.

Hulk Hogan
Andre the Giant
Stone Cold Steve Austin
The Rock
Jimmy Hart (Manager)
Bobby "The Brain" Heenan (Manager)

Arenas seen in screenshots:
Wrestlemania III
Wrestlemania IX
Wrestlemania XV

I don't think anyone else has been shown in screenshots, and no other official roster additions have been confirmed so far. Christ, that's not a lot of info.

Frightening that they haven't revealed an expanded roster list outside of the six mentioned or any new information this close to release. I'm in rental territory on the game, and this isn't helping matters at all.

Did you read how the game plays? Ive been dreaming of this game for 3-4 years now. But the gameplay sounds like udder shit. I really hope its cool, but so far it just sounds like its going to be a letdown.

Whats wrong with WWE:SvsR 2009? If people buy this legends game, then THQ might keep legends of the regular series permanently.

Just a guess, but I'm assuming that if you can import characters from SvsR2009 to Legends, then the games are going to play the same.

[quote name='whiptcracker']Just a guess, but I'm assuming that if you can import characters from SvsR2009 to Legends, then the games are going to play the same.[/QUOTE]Legends is supposed to have a simplified "arcade-like" control scheme of some sort, so I dunno!

Previews suggest the gameplay is "simplified," but I haven't read enough to specify more than that.

I don't give a flyin' squirrel at this point. I want to see screenshots of Razor Ramon, Demolition, Macho Man Randy Savage, and all the other motherfuckers who should be in this game.

They should just call him Savage Man Randy Macho and put him in the roster, shhhhh, Vince will never know.

It's a shame that Macho Man and Mick Foley aren't going to be in the game though.
I wonder if it's just like the rest of the Smackdown games with different button inputs and slightly different gameplay mechanics. That's okay I guess, just at this point I'm slightly tired of the Smackdown games since I've played every one of them.

I read that its like rock paper scissors. You have to win a battle of button presses to pull off something like a suplex. The more battles you win the bigger the moves will be, and finally hit a finisher which consists of more than just a hogan leg drop. Thats what i get out of it. Which sounds like shit. Like you will be playing a movie, and all you do is press buttons and hope you can pull off some dumb animation sequence. Of course you can move around. But its not how i want to play a wrestling game. It looks like the Legends of Wrestling game is cursed, no matter who makes it.

If they're gonna go all avant-garde with the control scheme they should really be doing that on the DS or something.
Although it's still hard to get less intuitive then holding RB and moving the analog stick to do a grapple.

Oh yeah, I remember that from the preview now. Strikes beat grapples, grapples beat blocks, and blocks beat strikes.

As long as they're using new move animations I guess I'm happy with it.

Dude. The lack of news is so aggravating. As a huge old-timey wrestling fan, I'm ready to plunk down money for this today, despite my newfound willpower during 2008 that allowed me to be patient enough such that I rarely spent more than $30 on any title.

TODAY.

But we're just over two months from release (fewer than 9 weeks), and there's no hype, no information, no nothin'. Just the paltry 4 wrestlers we know about and 2 managers.

So, THQ: WTF!?!? I half want to see if ol' CAG ViolentLee is working on this title (he was part of the SvR09 dev team) so I can beg him for info.

Yeah. I would like some info too. Just watch and see, the game will probably sell horrible and there wont be a second title because of their poor advertising, and lack of info except for 2 months before release.

I see one of two outcomes here: 1) Game isn't even close to finished, WWE forces a release anyway... game sucks. 2) Game doesn't come out on time.

There's no other reason to not have any press yet. Then again, outside of IGN, the Smackdown series doesn't get much in the way of press anyway.

But yeah, anyway, I really can't see any way that this lack of ANY news is a good sign. I understand keeping a new control scheme on the down-low, but it's the fact that there's no ROSTER news that's bothersome.

I expect the roster to suck (consisting mostly of guys who have already been in previous Smackdown games) and the controls to be the downfall of this game.

If they don't put the option to use the traditional SD control scheme in I think I'm passing.

It's a shame because I was really looking forward to this.

What sucks is that some of the biggest WWE legends aren't gonna be in the game because of stupid copyrights. With something as big as WrestleMania you'd expect every significant figure in the WWE's history, but I'm gonna guess we'll get a smaller-tier roster that could actually be put in the game due to legal issues.

I really hope all WrestleMania venues are in the game, if they do that that will be a plus. This is looking like a great idea but something as big as WWE legends needs to be done carefully, and I dunno but as many have said, the lack of info on this title is a bit suspicious.

Well, obviously guys that have already been in games (exceptions: guys who've had a falling out with Vince) will be in... but there *are* other interesting choices.

We have an entire line of WWE Legends figures where they haven't been in games. How about even mid-level guys like Hall, Waltman, or even Sid? Frankly, those excite me more than getting 'OMFGBBQ LEGENDARY!!!' guys. Also, I'm really curious to see if we get old versions of current stars, namely HBK. A circa mid-90's HBK would definitely help sell the game for me. Oh, and seriously, I want Mr. T. Heh.

So... it's not really as cut and dry as you might think. In fact, that's what worries me the most... that no news might mean it really IS as cut and dry as 'in before, in now'. That'd be awful.

I mostly want... Hogan, Andre, Macho Man, Ultimate Warrior, Ted Dibiase, Big Bosman, Demolition Ax and Smash, Earthquake, Mr Perfect, Bret Hart, Jake the Snake, Sgt Slaughter, Elizabeth, Scary Sherri with 90's HBK.

Demolition and Razor Ramon FTMFW.

Dino Bravo would be my underdog "awesome!" to have in the game.

Macho Man is my "never gonna happen" pick. One of these days we'll find out why he's been blackballed by the WWE.

Well, I'm happy to see that... it's definitely something I wanted in this game.

Also, I love that he even has the mullet. Heh.

I dont know if any of you saw, but there was a site that had a little preview of the game, and named the full roster. It looked believable, since it stated how savage wouldnt be in due to unknown reasons with vince, and how mick foley was taken out. Along with the usual rundown of what the game has in store, complete with andre vs hogan photo. But it was taken down shortly after i seen it. The URL was
Code:

I dont know if it was taken down because THQ contacted them and told them to take it down, or because it doesnt seem to be that trust worthy of a website. But for what its worth, THQ seems like they cant hold on to any secrets as of late, with roster leaks happeneing twice during the SVR09 previews. Here is a list of the roster they listed below.

Big Bossman
Mr Perfect
Jimmy Snuka
Hulk Hogan (Pictured)
Honky Tonk Man
Hawk
Greg Valentine
Dusty Rhodes
Brutus The Barber Beefcake
British Bulldog
Bret Hart
Big John Studd
Arn Anderson
Animal
Andre the Giant (Pictured)
Hunter Hearst Helmsley
Iron Sheik
Jake Roberts
Hacksaw Jim Dugan
Jim Neidhart
Junkyard Dog
Kamala
King Kong Bundy
Koko B Ware
Michael Hayes
Nikolai Volkoff
Ric Flair
Ravishing Rick Rude
The Rock
Rowdy Roddy Piper
Sgt Slaughter
Shawn Michaels
Stone Cold Steve Austin
Ted Dibiase
Ultimate Warrior
Undertaker
Yokozuna

This roster is really impressive i think. I hope its true, but a couple things that throw me a curve ball. Kamala and Michael Hayes. Im not sure they were at a wrestlemania, or in a match that really mattered. Kamala might have been a part of the gimmick battle royal a few years ago. But they could have thrown Hayes in just because he is a part of the WWE team.

Interesting, I was going to point this out the other day and forgot:

Best Buy has an exclusive 'Legends' disc with WWE The Music Vol. 9. I guessed that anyone on there would make the game... and they're all on that list. Off the top of my head: Austin, Rock, Helmsley, Warrior, Piper, Roberts, Perfect, Slaughter... a few more, too, I think.

Anyway, if that *is* the list, it skews way older than I ever anticipated. I figured we'd get a glut of people from the Attitude era, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The lack of Demolition or Razor is REALLY disappointing, though. 37 people... reasonable, but there may be more not listed. No indication of unlockables, either, which I'm sure there are.

Adding Arn Anderson and neglecting Tully Blanchard (Arn's only wrestling appearance at Wrestlemania was WM5 with Blanchard as his partner) is just weird to me. To the best of my knowledge, Michael Hayes' only 'Mania appearances are as Dok Hendrix - and Myke's right, Kamala was only in the Gimmick Battle Royal. JYD's another one, as I think he was only in very minor matches. If he got in without Hillbilly Jim, I'm confused.

A few others not making the list - Paul Orndorff (main evented WM1), Ricky Steamboat (though I sorta get it if they're not mentioning Savage), Dynamite Kid (see Arn Anderson), Sid (I'd mark out), Mr. Fuji (managing Yokozuna), and the aforementioned Razor Ramon and Demolition.

Yeah ricky steamboat is a strange one since he is still with the wwe. The list didnt show any managers. But i would assume Fuji would be in. Hopefully Sherri is in as HBKs manager.

I'd really like to see Owen Hart. He's never been available as a legend or anything in the SmackDown games since his death.. and I get why, but come on. It'd be a tribute to him.

I can't understand why Razor's in. I'm pretty sure that he'll be a hidden character. I know he signed a contact with Jakks which let them make figures based on the Razor character, so I don't understand why it wouldn't apply for his likeness on games, either.

People I want to see in: Sid, IRS (Money, Inc.. come on), Natural Disasters, Owen Hart, Bam Bam Bigelow, Demolition.. and I'd be set. Maybe Diesel, but that wouldn't happen.

Shit, I forgot about Earthquake. I've wanted his finisher in a game ever since WWF Wrestlefest.

The thing that throws me off about Sid is that he's even on WWE.com under the alumni/legends/whatever thing for non-HOF guys. So, I assumed he'd be fine.

The one thing I notice about that list that makes me believe it's not the whole roster... zero women. I know Impact did it, but I can't imagine they'd release a WWE game where the only women are managers. Hell, surely even just Trish and Sable (on the same list as Sid) would agree to it.

EDIT - just checked, it's the Alumni section. Not terribly impressive, but people that could or should be in the game and not on the list: Doink, Sid, Sable, Sunny, Lita, RVD.

I know I already said it, but looking over that list again and again I'm FLOORED at how old it skews. How many of their target age group (kids) even know who half these guys are?

EDIT EDIT - any indication on *which* Undertaker we're getting? Aside: he hasn't done too much of interest at Mania, but masked Kane would've been a worthy addition.

Usually i care about the female wrestlers in smackdown games. But for this legends game, there arent many females you could put in the game. Lita, Trish, Sable, ......count alunda blayze out. Not enough to worry about imo. I would love to see Elizabeth, Sherri, and maybe even Sapphire in the game as managers. But you wont see Liz. Sherri and Sapphire are possible though, since they managed HBK, Dibiase(money inc), and Rhodes of course. I dont see a big reason to include female wrestlers.

RVD isn't eligible, I believe they said it only covers up through WMXV.

I would love to see Elizabeth, Sherri, and maybe even Sapphire in the game as managers. .

Sunny, Luna Vachon, Sherri, Chyna, Terri Runnels, Debra, Ivory.. but Luna would require Bam Bam being in the game, and Terri would require Goldust in there.

[quote name='mykevermin']I can't fathom how Demolition and Razor Ramon would be left out of this game.[/QUOTE]

If they really are not in there it may be similar to the Savage issue...a long-term grudge. Vince may still be grinding his ax (no pun intended) with Eadie over the Demolition name/gimmick lawsuit from years ago. I don't think he's pissed with Darsow since he was on that LoD DVD from a couple years back...but I'd rather see no Demolition at all than Smash by himself. I guess I could accept Smash & Crush if they opted to go that route, but I don't see that happening.

Yeah the best we can hope for is demolition gear in the CAW.

A valid point, I suppose. I can't identify any rhyme or reason for who gets pulled from the game, and how that relates to grudges. Macho Man is one of those people who we'll seemingly never get the full story behind, and I just don't see the Demolition matter being as big of a deal.

Ultimate Warrior is in the game, no? Some folks have their non-WWE-involved Jakks contracts that would let them be in the game. Warrior is one. Dunno where Demolition are in there. Sammartino (not a WM guy) also has his contract without WWE's involvement. But, hey, so does Foley. Pulling Foley I lamentably understand - he's current on-air talent with TNA. Same reason we shouldn't expect Diesel in the game. But there are figures of Razor and Hall, Diesel and Nash, and Demolition as well. Macho Man, OTOH, simply is nowhere to be found in the annals of WWF history.

EDIT: I fully acknowledge that pulling Warrior from the game would be a disastrous move. But wouldn't the same be said about Savage? I'm also skeptical of the McMahon grudge thing. Not that it exists. I think that's highly likely. But that he's so intimately involved in the decision making process of a video game.

There was a brief glimmer of hope when they put Savage matches on the History of the IC Title DVD... which I still don't understand. The only way I can reason it out is that considering Macho/Steamboat is arguably the most well-known IC feud, they couldn't *not* put it on there. The problem with that logic is that Vince doesn't seem to care about Savage's ability to make money (blacklisted from toy line) OR video libraries. It literally doesn't make sense... Vince has a ton of stuff he doesn't release DVDs for, and obviously his hatred for Savage overrides the money issue. Doesn't make sense.

That's the baffling thing about the game... why let Savage be on a DVD (finally), but not in the game? No sense.

[quote name='BostonCollegeFan']Cool so this will be a remake of WWF Raw on Genesis, going by the cast list...

Hopefully it's Hunter Hearst Hemsley, and not Triple H.[/QUOTE]Hopefully it is his Hunter Hearst persona so you can re-live his epic confrontation with the Ultimate Warrior.

Because Savage on a DVD that features something about the IC Title is different then adding him to a video game. It sounds wonky, but it's logical. The IC Title DVD and other DVDs that have a Savage match on it, because it already happened and is a part of history.

Likewise why they put Benoit on DVDs still, they won't promote him obviously but they still include him because it's a part of history. But they won't put Benoit on any new video games for the same obvious reasons.

The Savage thing is petty on Vince's part. I saw a good article posted a while back detailing as to why Vince might have a grudge with Savage. And get this, it's due to Savage leaving the WWF and taking his Slim Jim sponsorship to WCW with him. And at the time was the WWF's biggest sponsor, thus Vince lost a LOT of money because of it.

Also, Savage hasn't been one of those old timers who crawls back to Vince because he needs money. Vince thrives on knowing that his former employers need help, it's all about ego and Vince knows Savage doesn't need his money.

It's childish, but what do you expect from a carnie sport?
