Steroids cause parts of the other sex to develop - men can grow breasts, while women can grow beards. This is likely why some transexuals used steroids. It's because taking steroids causes the estrogen levels in men to increase, and testosterone in women to increase. It's like the opposite of what you would think because steroid intake disrupts the normal hormonal balance in both sexes. This is why female bodybuilders who take steroids tend to have deep voices and male like features...it's not just a stereotype, it's because their testosterone levels are fairly high.

The condition where men start showing female features (female like breasts, etc) is called gynecomastia, and it also occurs with the use of certain prescription drugs as an adverse side effect if taken in large amounts because the drug increases estrogen levels in men. =P
