X360 Backwards Compatibility: Will it impact your purchase?

Since every current Xbox game will NOT be supported by the Xbox (see full list of backwards compatibile games here), has this had any impact on your desire to own a new X360?

Personally, I'm hesitant to buy the new system since I haven't finished all of my old Xbox games. I obviously don't understand the programming required to make games backwards compatible, but it just seems stupid that you would create a system that is unable to continue sustain its old fan base. Yes, I know the SNES wasn't backwards compatible with the NES, as were most other systems. However, ever since the PS2 has established the notion of backwards compatibility, most gamers are going to want this "feature" included in their systems. I know I do. I am disappointed that you can only get it with the premium system and only select games are included.

What are your thoughts on this? Any games that are missing off the list that you feel you personally need (or at least want) before you will buy the X360?

The first game that strikes me is the Prince of Persia series. While they have the first one (Sands of Time), Warrior Within and Two Thrones are missing. I'm sure there are several more games I would personally like to see, but I haven't gone over the list with a fine tooth comb, yet.

EDIT: When I said ALL current Xbox games, I mean that every single game isn't supported, not that none are supported. Sorry for the confusion, I have corrected the language and hopefully it's more clearly stated now.

I'm keeping my Xbox, so it doesn't really impact my personal purchase.

With backwards compatability, if the technology is different from the last console, you'll have to program software to emulate each and every title. My biggest gribe about backwards compatability is that it hinders the progress on future software and hardware. Because there is such a demand for it (specifically with "money-smart parents" who think they're getting more bang for their buck -- and maybe they are, in their household), I think Microsoft caved in.

Like I said, I'm keeping my Xbox, so I'm unaffected either way.

Well, most of the Xbox games worth playing ARE compatible. Also, an area of each memory card is set aside specifically for downloadable content. I am not sure if that includes the emulation for Xbox games, but I would assume it does.

Keeping my XBox; not effected.

And I really wish people would quit acting like that list is all that's going to be supported. They've said that they're going to issue updates and more and more titles will be BC.

And i'm not sure why you say "no current titles are bc".. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland is. Like someone else said, it's probably just the individual developer or engine that is giving them problems.. like the Unreal engine. None of the Unreal engine games are on the list. Just give it time.

It's the main sticking point for me, and the reason why I'm leaning towards a PS3. The biggest omission, IMHO, is the Burnout series. I've heard that Burnout: Revenge will come out as a 360 title (but I've no idea when).

In the meantime, I'm supposed to make due with PGR? Looks lovely, but Burnout is in a class of it's own.

Dang... That's what I get for doing four things at once. I'm busy studying and making a poll up and you fuckers go and post before I can finish the poll! I guess I should include: I'm not getting a 360 until I have some more free time, a bit more money, and i see more games that I'm actually interested in, but I do plan on getting the system at some point in the future. In the mean time, the in-between time, I plan on talking about it a lot. :D

I never owned an Xbox but am interested in the 360, so it would be a good selling point to me, that way I could go back and play a lot of the exclusives I missed like Ninja Gaiden.

It wasn't that big a deal until all the upgrades to Halo/Halo 2 leaked out. The fact they're putting a bit more into the emulation than just playing the game at a lower resolution.

Plus, better controller.

i feel exactly the same way about burnout. i really hope burnout 3 is compatible soon, yea they're coming out with revenge but 3 is way better than revenge. i've also looked to PGR as my substitute but i'm sure it won't fulfill my crashing and takedown needs.

not really, a majority of the games I played on my Xbox a bunch are on the list.

-Crimson Skies
-Star Wars: KOTOR
-Jade Empire
-Dead or Alive 3

I'm hoping somewhere down the line Mercenaries is added to the list.

Backwards compatability is nice, but if SONY never introduced it this discussion wouldn't even be going on. Back in the good ol' days everyone looked forward to the new titles with their better graphics. Also most would play the new system and disreguard the old. This is a good marketing tool, but I myself rarely play PSX games on my PS2. If this impacts purchases I feel sorry for the buyer. The only way you benefit from waiting over something minute like this is you get a cheaper system, but that to me would make you a casual gamer not a hardcore one. New systems are for better games and better graphics, it is nice to have the option to play past gen games, but if you really need to you can just boot up the old console.

or, you know, don't post until you're done writing out your post.

With the Nintendo Gameboy series and DS standing out, I can't really see how it would hinder progress. It's an extra, not a ball-and-chain, that adds to the systems library of games.

Personally, I've never played "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night," or owned any type of Playstation, but I like the fact that I could choose a PS3 and have immediate access to their back-catalog.

Very difficult game to emulate. And keep in mind, it will be emulated.

What makes a game difficult to emulate?

Nope, I buy new consoles to play new games. Most of my games are supported, that and the fact I'm keeping my XBox kinda makes the BC issue something that is a nice bonus, not much more.

I see the list, apparently quite short according to some people, as something for fanboys to bitch about and justify their crusade. Hell, I've had several DVDs not play in my PS2, and PS1 games lock up in it, but I've never really thought of it as a problem. I wanted a PS2 to play *gasp* PS2 games.
My somewhat "BC" DS doesn't play GBC games, not really an issue.

Somebody please tell me what the big deal is.

My only complaint is that they should have strived to emulate the new releases first. I just bought Burnout Revenge and NHL 2K6, and now I won't be able to play them for a while (I'm selling my Xbox).
