Phil Harrison, the president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has claimed that the Xbox 360 “doesn’t have true HD functionality” and that consumers looking for such functionality will have to wait for the PlayStation 3 to arrive.

In an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Harrison said: "As you well know, the Xbox 360 doesn't play high definition movies and doesn't have true HD functionality - PlayStation 3 is the only format that has 1080-progressive, which is the true definition of HD, so it's really premature to be talking about the HD era."

"The HD era really only starts when we are on the market," he concluded.

My TV doesnt support 1080p OMG I my HDTV is not true HD....Those bastards lied to me

These gaming execs are fuck . 95% of the friggin population doesn't know the difference between widescreen and fullscreen and this guy thinks 1080p is going to sell his console? At this point Nintendo reps should just come out and say that the Revolution is going to support 2160p. People are either not going to know the difference or they'll know it BS and not care.

While he may consider 1080p to be the only "real" HDTV none of the broadcast networks or cable channels will touch it. The bandwidth is excessive. 720p is going to settle as the broadcast/cable standard and everything above that will be from various components like gaming/PC's or HD-DVD/Blu Ray.

The number of people with 1080p sets by the end of this generation will be less than half that of those that currently have HD/digital sets.

I'm surprised he didn't make mention of dual 1080p displays. We all know that there's a plethora of gamers out there with matching $5,000 displays they only have because they want the ultimate PS3 setup.

Sometimes I think these guys only talk to taunt the competition because anyone with half a brain thinks they're full of shyte.

heh, he has a point in terms of talking about movies from the DVD. It's mostly a way for him to pimp out how the PS3 has a Blu Ray Drive. However In the future as more WMV9 HD content is released we'll get more content but he has a point that we can't get HDTV content in the form of media discs that you can stick into your 360.

The reason I jumped on the 360 was to play games in HD, not to make my DVD collection obsolete.

Did he go on to say how many hours of overtime and extra work we should put in to pay for a new 1080p HDTV so that we can be ready for when this HD era hits?

never mind the cost of the ps3

Sony's narcissism is really getting to be annoying. Let's all line up like sheep and buy the PS3 on launch day! Maybe they'll have The Bouncer 2!

Sony seems to really be going out of their way to alienate their customer base by offending them.

Ehh...This would be the same way if the console release dates were reversed. We'd all be sick and tired of J Allard if the 360 had been pushed back. However, none of this HD crap applies to me since ive been using the same TV since I was born

i admire his forwardness. once you see shit playing in 1080 p, you'll be saving those pennies for a new tv. yes, sony. bring us the deliverer!!

honestly 1080p isn't that far from being affordable. I bought my 1080p 37" LCDTV for 1649 (it's 1499 now)

And with more projection DLP's supporting 1080p it's not that far from being very affordable.

Trust me when I say i'm happy enough to get 720p in my games. The biggest difference was the difference between traditional 480i games and the jump to 720p.

Sony never lives up to their own hype, and I think we've learned this enough times already (PSP? PS2 Linux and AIM? PS2 producing Toy Story real-time graphics?). This guy is full of it, and Sony is only digging themselves a deeper hole, which will cost them customers (myself already included).
never mind the cost of the ps3
Because $300-$400 is oh so expensive
PS2 producing Toy Story real-time graphics?
MICROSOFT MADE THE CLAIM FOR TOY STORY GRAPHICS

Sony should know what "real" HDTV is since they've been making HDTVs for years now. What they're trying to do now is push "Full HD" which is nothing more than a marketing term for making you regret not waiting to buy a 1080p set. All the HDTV manufacturers are making a big push for the 1080p format to cash in on holiday sales even though there's very little content for it.

isn't it less than 2% of US household even have a TV that puts out 1080P...

Anyway sony was the 1 claiming realtime toy story graphics.. and this was for PS2... not microsoft...

I'll like to see them pull something remotely close to the killzone demo...

Don't forget to add that crazy Ken said something to this effect: The PS2 is like jacking into the Matrix. :D

With all this bad-mouthing of Sony, its as if none of you own a PS2 or PSP (yeah right), or won't buy a PS3 at some point in time. Don't kid yourselves, you know you're gonna buy one eventually.

What's the point in hating a company you'll eventually end up supporting and who's products you'll enjoy?

It's really unfortunate there isnt a single HDTV standard out there. I think a lot of consumers (for both the XBox 360 and PS3) will be upset that their system doesnt output to the resolution of their expensive LCD or Plasma and latency from upconversion becomes an issue.

Stupid corporate fucks.

I'm sick of hearing about HD.

Wow. Could you please try to sound a bit more condescending and stuck-up? I'd like to see if it's posisble.

When broadcasters actually start broadcasting in 1080p, then 1080p will be relevant. Xbox 360 doesnt even do 1080p. HD starts at 720p, not where Phil Harrison says it does. Look, I can agree, Sony does make great tv's. But Blu Ray has not won the next gen dvd battle and neither has the PS3 even sold one unit yet. Phil is just talking a whole lot bs and it's not relevant and it's not accurate. How about some playable ps3 demos instead of pr blabber?
(re: Sony & PS3) What's the point in hating a company you'll eventually end up supporting and who's products you'll enjoy?
Maybe if you make 50,000+ a year or something. It's too expensive to own all the upcoming consoles and buy enough games to be satisfied with all of them. It's time to pick a side and live with it - note that doesn't mean acting like asshole fanboys, but it means being happy with the decision you made.

No interest in the PS3. None. They've shown me nothing that even remotely grabs me. I honestly have more interest in the Revolution right now than either the 360 or PS3 (although I'll probably wind up getting a 360 when the price is reasonable). If the Revolution would just use a regular goddamn controller instead of this interactive outer space moon device from the year 2099, I'd probably be down for it already. Keep in mind this is someone who hasn't had any interest in Nintendo since the original (full size, non-backlit, green and black graphics) Game Boy came out.
Ehh...This would be the same way if the console release dates were reversed. We'd all be sick and tired of J Allard if the 360 had been pushed back.
What are you talking about? Peter Moore is just as much an annoying bastard prick as this Sony clown is. I wish they'd both shut the fuck up, they make whoever supports them look retarded.
MICROSOFT MADE THE CLAIM FOR TOY STORY GRAPHICS
I'M VERY ANGRY AND UPSET ON THE INTERNET!
Maybe they'll have The Bouncer 2!

The sad part is I really like The Bouncer and would buy a copy if they ever made it..

// owns a copy and still play it from time to time, it was the closest thing to final fight back then..

As far as I know, none of the current Sony 1080p displays will even accept 1080p inputs yet. Sony said they did not allow 1080p input because of copy protection. So, I guess their 1080p displays aren't really true HD either.

1080p will make 1080i look like black and white tv. like it or not. 1080p will knock the socks off of anything else. sure, sony is talking smack, but there is truth to it. you'll be drooling when you see it in action.
Way to piss on all those consumers who bought sony hdtv's that only support 720p.
you cant blame sony for that. eventually 1080p owners will be pissed on. technology moves too quick to keep up with.

Coffeedge - Sorry if I sounded that way. I was simply trying to make a statement, this forum is Cheap Ass GAMER. I'd think its pretty reasonable to assume that the people on this board aren't stupid enough to let themselves decide which console to buy based on whether or not it runs 720 or 1080p. And I still think, regardless of how much Sony-bashing there is, I'm going to guess that 85% of posters will buy a Ps3 at some point in time, whether it be at launch or 3 years after launch, and *gasp* they will like it.

Kanerobot - You have a good argument with the near-ridiculous price levels of consoles, games, and their accessories. But aren't you gonna work those extra hours JUST to buy the PS3? (my ass whoever from Sony said that)
Oh Sony. Is you're system HD? Oh, wait, you're PS3 isn't out yet.
Your.

"Is you are system HD?"

NO!

YES!

How many games are really going to be able to run 1080p with 512 Megs of RAM and no hardrive. You are talking about serious horsepower needed for something like that. I bet that the number of 1080p games on the PS3 will ber like the number of 720p games on the original XBOX. There will be some and they will be very pretty, but the majority of games will be in 720p.

Bad mouthing of Sony??? I'm bad mouthing Crazy Ken. I don't like being blatantly lied too over and over again. I've grown accustomed to pulling the BS card 99.9% of the time whenever crazy Ken talks. He truly is full of ****.

As for this HD era hasn't arrived yet nonsense. He sure could of fooled me. Even the PS2 and XBOX had games that ran in 1080i/720p. HD era in games was started by those consoles. XBOX 360 just solidified it even more.

there is a point beyond which consumers do not associate quality and price. They may have hoodwinked the general populace with the PSP via the aid of rappers and whatnot, but I dont see them convincing anyone to buy a 500+ dollar console. It hurt atari. It can hurt them.

I can easily afford a PS3, but out of principle, and general disgust over the garbage spewing that happens everytime someone from Sony opens their mouth, I plan to pass for as long as possible, if not period. Furthermore, I dont own an HDTV. I dont even own a regular TV, nor do I intend to buy even a regular TV anytime soon. I play everything on a 17" monitor via a pc tv tuner card(composite or s-video). I'm obviously not picky about these sort of things.

And the person who said
a) that you would have to work extra hours(and/or get a job or something like that) and
b) the PS3 cannot be at a price point that targets regular households
is Ken Kutaragi, President of SCE. Nothing good happens when he speaks.
But aren't you gonna work those extra hours JUST to buy the PS3? (my ass whoever from Sony said that)
Like Dr Mario Kart said it was crazy Ken who said that nonsense.

And you forgot to mention that he said PS3 would be expensive. He said the same thing about PS2 and we know how that turned out.
Just as a side note, wasn't the PS3's pricing confirmed? $300 and $400 sets just like the 360? I swear I saw a thread on CAG about this.
That was the speculation, but nothing "confirmed" has been released. I will believe it when I see it.

To anyone who is sick and tired of hearing about HD: get with the program, HD isn't coming it's already HERE. It's called set envy: you want HD? Save 50 cents a day, $15 per month . That's enough to finance a mid range HDTV at a store like Best Buy or Circuit City.

Want to buy one and not bother with financing or credit? Save $1 per day, in a year you'll have enough to buy a decent 26 inch wide screen with HDMI and progressive component inputs.

All this cheapness stuff is needless conformism. The prices on monitors drop every day and every network has an HD option OTA for free in most major metropolitan areas, most digital cable companies offer local channels in HD for free with basic service and offer tiered HD programming [Discovery, ESPN, inHD, HBO, Showtime, etc] for as little as $3 a month.

Yet Walmart sells dozens of 20 inch $100 sets everyday..for real..what a waste. Even the cheap $40 DVD players support progressive scan and even PS2 runs quite a few games in 480p/1080i...people still use RF switches, composite boxes, and VCR's? Ugh.
1080p will make 1080i look like black and white tv. like it or not. 1080p will knock the socks off of anything else. sure, sony is talking smack, but there is truth to it. you'll be drooling when you see it in action.
Wrong.

If a TV properly deinterlaces 1080i, there should be almost no noticeable difference between 1080i and 1080p.

Many TV, even the 1080p displays do not deinterlace 1080i correctly. Because of this, you only get half the 1080 lines of resolution (540).

It's here for diehards and the wealthy. It's not here for the general public.

Therefore, it's not here. Sorry.

And yes, I do have an HDTV...although I've owned it for less than a month.

I disagree. Anyone who buys a primary TV from now on that isn't HD and 16:9 is a total moron. It would be like buying a Beta VCR because they were cheap but were already discontinued. OK, maybe money has something to do with it but HD sets are really really cheap now - certainly cheaper than a regular TV that looked like a piece of furniture was back in 1975 and I'm not even counting inflation.
