Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Just Cause 4 is all but confirmed. According to Bloomy's list it's counting down 1 day left which lines up for March 7th.

Square Enix is throwing a lot of support into Game Pass. How's this for wild speculation... what if this is a precursor to Square selling off their western IPs and studios to Microsoft? Square hasn't seemed all that interested in promoting their western IPs anymore and Microsoft is an eager buyer.

Getting SoTR on GP so early definitely supports this idea. What I'd enjoy is MS helping pay for development of games like Tomb Raider and inking a deal to make them on GP at launch, similar to first party titles. Or publishing rights, similar to Sunset Overdrive (Insomniac owns the IP).

Oh. I was just making a facetious joke about how negative this thread often is, but I know when I'm not welcome. Apologies to everyone here for being too negative for this thread. I hope I didn't ruin your days.
Believe me, you're far from the worst offender of anything in this thread. #HUGS

I don't think Square Enix would sell off everything, but I guess it's not impossible. They clearly don't know what to do with the western studios as they keep making so many weird choices with them or essentially sabotaging games with business practices that upset the fans. Maybe if all the Marvel games their studios are working on sell a lot better than the under performing owned IP.

In theory I could see them selling everything but Tomb Raider if enough money was offered, but I don't see MS wanting to do that unless studios come with the IP. Eidos Montreal would probably be the best fit if they came with Deus Ex.

Yeah I think that could happen in the future, and I wonder if Game Pass was an option then if something like that would of happened with that weird Rise of the Tomb Raider 1 year exclusivity thing.

Even if it doesn't happen so glad I didn't buy it this week on PSN ($30 and use my 20% code). Have some PSN space bucks and have bene in a gaming rut. Then I remember this will be a $10 in a year. This would be even better.

Decided to hook up my 360 to delete some games installed that have gone BC. Had 3 or 4 to delete.

Also decided to start up a non BC physical 360 game to work on the backlog and since the final season is coming up: the Game of Thrones RPG. I heard it wasn't great and had some jank to it. Haven't run into any glitches but the queue up what attack to use next combat I'm not a fan of and so far, at least in the one chapter I played, it is very cutscene heavy. I know the chances are unlikely but I'd love a well polished game set in the game of thrones world, especially one that doesn't have cameos from well known characters or isn't set at the same time as the book/show. Maybe I should just play Kingdom Come: Deliverance.

Completed Crackdown 3 campaign and I enjoyed it even if it was short. I think I only maxed out strength. I haven’t touched warzone yet tho. For some reason I started playing Just Cause 3 for the first time and I enjoyed it more than Crackdown 3, JC3 put CD3 into shame by the amount of destruction it has and the size of the map. Although the frame rate drops during moments with huge amount of insane explosive destruction, it has more of that than CD3 with its cloud power. My Gold runs out in a week but I still have a couple more weeks of GamePass. I may put JC3 on hold if JC4 gets added, since I bought JC3 awhile back when it was $9 bucks I can come back to it. Might cash out some Rewards points to redeem 3 months worth of gold but might do that started April, we’ll see.

There was no "cloud power" in Crackdown 3 single player

You can take Just Cause 4 to the bank as being the title, their tweet before this was "No Explanation Needed" (just because) 4. Does have me eyeballing the other 2 titles on Bloomy's spoiler countdown that don't look like the others. One a Codemasters game and the other is a pretty well regarded "walking sim". Codemasters no strangers to gamepass at least.

Armello is awesome either way but the DLC adds lots of cool characters to the mix.
I’ve always wanted to try this game didn’t notice it on the sale holy crap though lots of dlc don’t think I want to spend $50 on dlc what ones would you say are worth the money

They really should have done an X digital console if they wanted to do it at all. The S already has problems running newer games (judging by the Digital Foundry articles and videos at least).

I know this is supposed to be a cheap option but who wants to buy an outdated console at this point of the generation?

I think that price difference would be dead on arrival, if they are trying to bring these in at something like sub $150. This isn't for the gamer who bought the X, In reality it might not really be for anyone with more than a passing interest in games at all. I can get this box and GamePass and have all these games isn't that bad of a bargain. Makes some sense also if it's pushing the 4k app streaming angle with the work on Dolby Atmos and DTS X on the recent dashboard previews. I'd be curious if this changed up the whole "home" console sharing as it works right now. I could see wanting to share across more than 2 consoles rather quickly in a lot of setups.

I understand what they are trying to do. I just think if it runs games poorly it isn’t going to help the Xbox brand. Just my two cents.

Who knows? Maybe they did make some tweaks to make it run better than the current S models do. Just whenever I read those DF articles, sounds like some more recent games run awful nowadays on the S.

Lol another week with the AC Odyssey season pass on sale on PSN, but not on Xbox.

Guess I'm going to have to continue holding out.  I would feel silly to pay MSRP for the season pass at this point.

I think that's also something they are going to have to figure out, as you said "this point in the generation". They don't seem to be even considering hardware generations anymore. It seems at least to me there's not going to be an announcement at E3 saying here is Xbox One 2 and Halo Infinite exclusively on that system. It will also run on the current hardware to different degrees just like a PC upgrade. I do think the OG Xbox One will be killed off and we don't know if this discless system is really just an S without a 4k blu ray drive or if there is even more upgrades inside it.

I'd wager a lot more people than you would expect. Working at a game store in a town with a decent amount of low income families I see just how many people don't want, or are financially unable to upgrade systems. You also have people wanting the older systems as a dirt cheap entertainment option, with some very young or pretty old people having been buying PS2's from me lately for the $5 and lower price point on games or DVD player for the kids. It's mostly the 360, Wii, and PS2 that are carry that flag in my experience.

If this is the MS's intention, the flaw is that people with very little money want a disc drive. For one, it gives them access to much cheaper used games, and with many of these families that are just now buying PS4/Xbone they mention this is their first blu-ray player. This also falls in line with the trend of the "patient gamer", who buy into a generation fairly late once games and consoles are cheap. There are less of these guys but they are at least a small percentage, the issue once again being they will want to be able to use discs.

Really, I think this lines up more with the potential streaming service. It also could be an attempt to normalize a digital-only console if one of the two models of Xbox Two doesn't have a drive. Even if it is as low as $150, it isn't really a good sell as something on par with a Fire Stick or Chrome Cast since most TVs now have Smart functionality built in, but it does look pretty damn appealing as a competitor to Apple TV 4K, if it in-fact does support 4K. You have access to pretty much all video apps except Apple, and access to console quality games instead of trash mobile ports.

If they ONLY removed the disc drive, I'm not sure if it would drop down to $150 though. I think the cheapest actual MSRP on an Xbox One S right now is either $300 or $250. Though the various bundles seem to hit between $230 and $250 most of the time now. Maybe if they remove the drive, maybe Ethernet or HDMI in, and go back to 500 GB they could squeeze down to $150, but I feel like 1 TB should be the minimum storage if you have to download everything currently. I don't think game streaming is going to be around until late this year at the absolute earliest.

Wouldn't be surprised if all Xbox One games run natively on the next Xbox system out of the box. Additionally if there are upgraded versions of games for the next Xbox system I'm expecting to immediately have access to the next-gen version if I own the Xbox One version. Basically Xbox Play Anywhere, but cross compatibility/ownership between console generations, PCs, xCloud compatible devices, etc.

If it was cheap enough, I totally would, between Game Pass, digital sales, and GWG. But I probably have way more digital games than the average person because I spend time on here with you nerds. Could be a useful secondary system for a bedroom, for example.

With 4k video output, you think about the cost of an Apple TV 4k being $200, which is probably where this MSRP would begin, with support for 4k video across lots of streaming services. Add a Game Pass subscription, and you've got a whole lot of content.

It's not for everyone, but I think there's definitely a market for it.

I guess my thing was just having read how poorly recent game run on the S. That really was the main point I was trying to convey. People buy this new digital only system and find themselves with frame rate issues, etc. They aren’t going to leave with a very good taste in their mouth if it’s their first Xbox experience.

But I haven’t played on an S in 1.5 years so maybe those DF articles are overblown in how bad they run. And we don’t know the full specs on this thing yet.

Not sure if the Apple TV 4K is a fair comparison. It's actually deceptively powerful for a streaming device.

But I could definitely imagine a disc-less version of the S for around $200 or an X version around $350-400

Apple TV 4K is a far better streaming device for movies than the Xbox One. And way better movie deals than MS that make it worth the price as well as free 4K upgrades.

But it also sucks for gaming.

So not really a good comparison.

We still don't know if this thing is just an Xbox S without a drive that probably costs them $5 a piece in bulk. Could be other upgrades so jury is still out.

edit: or if it's even real at all

I honestly do think some of that is DF getting really specific, the average consumer cares a lot less (same with 4k and Apple streaming). The one standout issue that comes to mind is load times in RDR2, but that game is really pushing the hardware to its limit - most don't.

I know you're quite the film buff, and most folks here pay attention to the gaming industry way more than the average person. This isn't an X system because it isn't targeting hardcore anybody, it's a cheaper general consumer product, much like the S model itself. Personally, I love my S and haven't had any problems running any games on it.

I still think a system with Game Pass and support for basically all streaming services but iTunes (Netflix, Amazon, VUDU, Hulu, etc - and that's not counting Movies Anywhere as a solution) at a low enough price is going to have an appeal. In the past, digital prices have been pretty stubborn, and I think it would have prevented an all-digital system from being very successful. A subscription service makes it way more practical. Whether or not folks who pay less attention to the industry understand or care about services like Game Pass will probably make or break a digital-only system.

When I buy my next X size upgraded console hardware I do want Display Port as an option, probably not going to happen in time with TVs and all, but I do want it.

In my experience the average casual consumer doesn't seem to notice performance issues unless a game runs like absolute trash like PUBG did for a long time, has a lot of long load times like Jump Force and Anthem, or if it's really buggy like Mass Effect Andromeda or Fallout 76. Many people are simply forgiving of it as long as it isn't constant, and if they bought a cheaper system at this point they tend to know they aren't going to get the best experience due to the existences of X and PS4 Pro.

I think there are a couple more things to consider. First, the few games that the really casual players, the people that only play like three games a year, tend to run at 60 FPS even on the base consoles. I'm thinking Call of Duty, all of the sports games like Madden and NBA2k, and Fortnite. The other factor is that most games at least run at fairly consistent 30 FPS, but have a lower than 1080p resolution while still looking good enough if you aren't picky.

I watch most of the Digital Foundry console videos, and the only big games coming to mind that have looked totally unacceptable (based on performance) to me were Just Cause 3 and PUBG, and I even played PUBG for a while because it was a unique experience at the time. People who have big-brain complaints like "no Xbox One X patch makes Watch Dogs 2 UNPLAYABLE" are in the minority. People who swear so hard by graphics tend to know what they want and go for the upgrade systems and better quality TVs. As for performance, I feel like most console players are fine with most games as we've been dealing with 30 FPS on the majority of games basically since the PS2 generation.

I agree with the points above. Just haven’t had an S in a while to know just how bad a game like RDR2 runs on it.

And for the sake of clarification I am not a “Watch Dogs 2 is unplayable without an X patch” kind of guy.

I’m a graphics whore since the X but I’m not THAT bad. :)

Wouldn’t go as far as saying an Apple TV 4K is a poor gaming experience. When you pair it with a gaming controller it can be very adequate. The selection of quality games with controller support is definitely limited... though there are a bunch of great library of indie games available.

Though I completely agree that I’d rather game on a game console if I had a choice.

Anyone have a clue why I can't play Forza Horizon 1 on my 360 but it works just fine on my one?

I have it downloaded digitally on the 360 and it always gives me the insert disc or disc is dirty notice....

Pretty sure I own it from GWG not gamepass or anything (if it's even on gamepass)...

So I have a funny bug on Crackdown where the enemies don't move their legs when running around. Anyone else get this? It carries over from load to load also.

Never had that bug, and I'm in deep, I would have been at least amused hunting down the last few orbs

Decent price on an SSD although $50 is starting to seem like the base sale price on drives this size, someone was talking about one the other day but don't remember who.  480gb $50 free shipping

The load time improvements with SSD were good enough that I already replaced the 500GB SSD with a 1TB.  I'll use the smaller drive on the PS4 for stuff like Bloodborne.

Interesting, but would go against every I think that would be in play if your trying to bring everything under one Xbox banner to start dipping into pure mobile games again. That said I also don't think it was sustainable at all to keep up the cycle of main line Forza and Forza Horizon every other year. I feel the last couple of outings have suffered because of this. Maybe a 3rd Forza game in the Need for Speed Street vein? I don't know enough about the series to know how much it differs from the others, I do remember Need for Speed Shift playing quite a bit differently.

I would say the 1st step to a disc-less drive they need to address is the ability to download your Microsoft movie purchases directly onto your HD. Gamepass and streaming are nice but the ability to watch anything while being disconnected from the internet would go a long way.

Screw Microsoft Movies & TV. It's completely stupid that you can't start the VLC app without your Xbox One being connected to the Internet when you first open it.

Yeah I've seen this. They move like electric football players (the old school buzzing board kind). It's not a constant thing but seems to pop up in fire fights.
