Some notes
  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

Hey TV nerds, I'm probably buying a larger TV. Still not all-in on 4k, but since the X1S supports HDR, I'm looking at options. May eventually get an X1X or inevitably, Scarlett, and probably won't buy a new TV for a long time.

Currently have the TCL 43" 4 Series. I like it just fine, it could be a little fancier. Tom's Guide says the 5 series is the best 4k TV under $500. Leaning towards the 55" TCL 5 Series (currently $380 at Best Buy). Is the difference in 5 and 6 series worth the extra money? A friend said she'd buy my 43" for $200 so that'll bring my cost down too.
Agree with all the others that the 6-series is worth the extra money with the local dimming, etc. Makes a big difference for HDR and Dolby Vision. I have a 607, which is the model before it and love it. Newer 6-series has even more local dimming zones and is a great deal for a TV that is closer to OLED specs at a much lower price. Also has good latency specs for gaming.

65” is down to $699 if you want to go a lot bigger than your 43”.

The point of HDR is the capability to have a very wide range of brightness, so that you can have a normal scene but have a portion of it be extremely bright (the sun in the sky is a perfect example). Properly-implemented HDR does not mean that the whole screen is blindingly bright.

I've noticed that regular SDR mode often defaults to being obnoxiously bright on HDR sets; they should be adjusted/calibrated to something more reasonable. But unfortunately a lot of people probably leave them in "torch mode". This might even reduce the life of the set, but I don't have any hard evidence of that.
A quick anecdote related to this - I play on a Sony X900F, which is a very good HDR set. AC Origins looks absolutely gorgeous on it in 4K HDR, but there's one event in the game (thankfully rare) that causes the whole screen to briefly go full-white. I've forgotten what it is - it might be transitioning into or out of the land of the dead that's in the DLC. In any case, when this happens I literally throw my arm in front of my face, because it's like staring into the sun.

lol that's not even close to her budget. great tv, just not a good recommendation for her.

I wouldn't spend too much on a tv. I'm pretty sure the new xbox will be 8k compatible.
8K isn’t going to be adopted very quickly and will probably be pricey for a long time. And honestly you will need at least a 75” TV to see the difference.

I wouldn’t hold off on buying a TV for 8K support.

Agreed re: 8k, similar to how 720p vs 1080p is hard to see a difference on anything under 40". I'm slightly concerned that I'll think 1080p looks bad on a 55" TV (or worse, 720 on some 360 games) but fuck it.

Yeah, she did say “bigger” but the 55” is probably more in the range she wants. Of course, still $180 more than what the 5 series is.

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/tcl-55-class-led-6-series-2160p-smart-4k-uhd-tv-with-hdr-roku-tv/6204548.p?skuId=6204548
I do appreciate the recommendations, but yeah, $700 is probably out of budget. I'm also not sure if the 65" would fit on the TV stand we're using.

What a time to be alive, contemplating if 55" is a big enough TV. I remember getting a 32" CRT in college and thinking gaming would never get bigger than that. Star Fox 64 sure looked good on it, though.

With the recent removal of all the Tell Tale games and the multiple other digital games that have been removed over the generation is any one else feeling a little leary about buying digital and starting to lean back into buying discs? Starting to think digital is fine for games that im not overly excited about but anything i really want and want to keep may be a disc from now on. Im sure for most games they will be there and stay on the digital store front and the digital sales can be great sometimes but no can take a disc away from me cause the music license is no longer valid.
Telltale's downfall isn't an indictment on digital, but an indictment on shitty management of a developer that works on licensed properties 90% of the time. When their management ran themselves out of business, the first thing to go besides the people are the licenses and the content made with it, which is how it'll always go for licensed games. At least Skybound stepped in for their Walking Dead games, so that should be okay, but the other license holders (Disney, HBO, WB/DC, 2K/Gearbox, etc) can decide whether they want to do the work to get their games back up or not. It doesn't help that they're episodic, so physical versions and the season passes change how you get the game compared to normal, complete games.

that reminds me, i have my 65" TCL coming in this week so if anyone has game/movie recommendations or even just settings I should turn on/off, i'll take any tips.
Mine came last Friday. Turn on gaming lol. Seriously though, gaming on this tv is crazy good. Your setting will depend on room light but very simple adjustments. Follow that Rtings for a base.

I wouldn't spend too much on a tv. I'm pretty sure the new xbox will be 8k compatible.
8K is totally worthless on consumer-sized TVs. It's sad that manufacturers are even wasting time on that crap. Television at 4K has finally reached the "good enough" point for resolution. It would be better now to focus on improvements in contrast, color gamut, motion/persistence and anything else that might make an actual difference in the picture rather than just cramming more useless pixels into the screen so they can put a bigger number on the marketing brochure. If you project onto a 100"+ screen or you have an 85" TV, you might get a small benefit from 8K, but that's about the extent of it.

Agreed re: 8k, similar to how 720p vs 1080p is hard to see a difference on anything under 40". I'm slightly concerned that I'll think 1080p looks bad on a 55" TV (or worse, 720 on some 360 games) but fuck it.

I had a 60" 1080p TV for about 5 years and it still looked good. Going from 1080p to 4K is a relatively subtle change, unlike going from SD to HD. This ties back to my "8K is useless" rant above. :)

Yeah I think variable refresh rates, which the X already supports, on actual TVs and not just computer monitors will be a bigger difference. It's kind of weird TV's currently have the better HDR and monitors have the better refresh rates. We need a nice marriage of the two.

LOL @ the people complaining that their free digital goodies they got for watching a video weren't good enough.
Not sure it's complaining, more of an amusement on how fucking awful they are, see no problem in saying that

I think it’s the HDR and not as much as the pixel count that is the big difference. And that, in turn, is why it’s more important to get a 4K TV that has good HDR / Dolby Vision. The boost in colors and deeper blacks can be significant over 1080p or 4K SDR.

1080 looks great on a 100" projection screen. Not sure if it's the same comparison, but I've also never seen a large screen 1080 screen look bad, so long as you have HD content. I have a 65" right now, and I've never looked at it and wished I was watching on my 43" 4k TV instead. You'll be fine, so long as you don't put a 4k tv and a 1080 tv next to eachother and watch the same program ;)

I know alot of us have bought xbox credit on Rakuten when they had sales, just received this email from them today so be on the look out for free points to spend.

You guys are killing me. I don't have time to report every stupid reply, but kindly keep things relevant to the thread title. It's one thing to ask if a 4k TV is worth it without an X1X, but if you're going to ask about specific models and deals just make a separate thread.

Bummed about the Mixer rewards. Like others said, should have expected garbage if they aren't even gonna advertise it. Oh well, still free for watching something I was tuning into anyways. I don't care if Mixer or Twitch gets my ad support lol.

I was out of town for a couple days, but what were the new sales Monday? Nothing on the sale page on my console stands out to me as different...

It's good to see the effort is making a difference at least, right?

If that is all the Mixpot is for an E3, I wonder if Mixer's lack of traction is starting to be felt at Microsoft. Only DLC for F2P games? That's a real dumpster fire.

I have actually received that email before also for once buying Xbox Credit, I've never actually received the free money emails from MS

I'd have thought with the focus on Game Pass that they'd give people a free month of Game Pass Ultimate to see how many would forget to cancel or intentionally pay full price for it.

Nice, thanks! Reminder for those who haven't done this, it's an easy 2500 points - you don't even have to play the game.
Wouldn't work for me... I wonder if the lame mixpot reward for the same game that auto loaded before I accepted the challenge screwed me over... :(

E3 sales were longer than the average 7 days, no new deals went up. There have been daily deals, but they have not been noteworthy.

Asking about TVs in relation to using an Xbox for gaming is plenty on topic, IMHO. I trust the regulars here more than the average forum. Complaining about this kind of thing clogs the thread more than any tangentially related topic, and now my inbox too.

I think that's what the $1 conversion is at least partial for. To make sure everyone has a payment method attached to potentially get hit with the recurring fee, or less cynically to people can see the benefits and want to stick with it at full price. They're set to make a hell of a lot more money at $15 a month than the $60 a year that Gold brings in.

I'd guess another reason is so they can go to publishers and look at how many millions of GamePass subscribers we have. The numbers surely are going to shoot up a ton from the cheap conversion.

They could've also done regular Gold or Game Pass to help add to the combined increase, though I don't know if they still haven't fixed the issue from the beta where you can't add on to the combined sub after doing it.

Here is the Major's post for the DwG sale:

Not much compared to the E3 sale, but at least there are :360: games on sale.

Why feed the captnagagain or whatever? Ignore and move on. I’m in the market for my first 4K myself and thinking of a series 6 tcl.
My TCL 6 Series is fantastic. You won't be disappointed. As if you needed more endorsements for the brand.

the telltale situation on the xbox marketplace is an anomaly. i wouldn't plan my future out of fear of it happening again.

a typical delisting scenario allows people who previously purchased the game to continue downloading it. if you paid for it, you can still access it.
I went through my 360 games recently and besides empty game servers there are only 4 games (out of 400+) that are completely unplayable after being delisted. They just sit on the start screen and give an "unable to connect to server" message when you press start.

Weekend before last we replaced a dying 50" Plasma with a 65" TCL 65R615 (Best Buy doesn't have voice remote). My wife watches lots of older TV programs. She did comment you can see more of the bad video quality these recordings have. Not horrible say 12 feet back. But much closer then that you can see all sorts jaggies and crap. I also had to turn off something to do with overscan (forget the exact wording). Otherwise at the top of some 240/480 shows you would see a wavy line. Also set the brightness lower and turned off motion smoothing.

Netflix, Prime and Youtube all look great. HD stuff looks good too.

I think it looks decent at 12+ feet even with low def stuff. It seems to bother my wife more. I might have to put the 65 in the basement with the game consoles. The sacrifices I have to make....

Yeah I gameshare with my son and I just changed it to download on the Xbox I was currently logged into and it worked, I’m pretty sure that’s why some people were having problems because it was trying to download to the home Xbox rather then where they were logged into.

Plus I’m pretty sure you can only change your home Xbox once every 6 months or twice a year or some shit, I can’t remember cause I haven’t did it in years but you definitely don’t wanna do all that.
Okay good to know. I just didn't want to mess up gameshare since it's working but if you did it and it didn't change anything, I will go ahead and try it.

E3 Mixpot so far:

Neon Ninja Class, Bushin Beatmaster Costume, Wild C.A.T. Mount for Trove

World of Warships: Legends - Combat Pack

Dwarven Avatar Pack for Gems of War

fuck
I don't know how to access those games even though I got a notification telling me I have them. I have also never heard of them.

What are those 4 games?

I've heard recently that Earthworm Jim HD can't be re-downloaded on xbox 360 anymore but I haven't test that out yet.

While being bored at work, I decided to go through some things online and I found out that there are a handful of freebies for Max Payne 3 on the Xbox Store:

Compatibility Packs:

Multiplayer Compatibility Pack # 1 (for people that don't own Hostage Negotiation Pack)

Multiplayer Compatibility Pack # 2 (for people that don't own Painful Memories Pack)

Multiplayer Compatibility Pack # 3 (for people that don't own Deathmatch Made in Heaven Pack)

Actual free content:

Disorganized Crime Pack

Gorilla Warfare Pack

Perfect for when you're unable to play the game on :xb1: because it isn't BC!

If they do acquire from software I hope they remaster demon souls .That shit would look glorious in 1080p especially taking down that adjucator boss.
Unfortunately I’m fairly certain Demon Souls is a Sony-owned property. Hence the whole reason the series became Dark Souls and was multi-plat. So ironically, if MS acquires From Software, it might actually kill a DS remaster. But I could be wrong 😉

Oh and it could also kill Bloodborne 2 ... just saying

These can still be downloaded but rely on servers that have been shut down to run:
Doritos CRASH course 2
Ascend: Hand of Kul
Spartacus Legends
World Series of Poker: Full House Pro

Hadn't heard about earthworm Jim. I keep all my games (except the 4 listed) that aren't BC installed.

I kind of doubt From Software would accept being acquired in the current era. They've had nothing but hit after hit and no trouble funding projects. Sony actually owns the Demon Souls franchise, that's why they changed to Dark Souls when they went to Bandai Namco to publish on both platforms.

He's not really being a dick like most of the mass ignored people in the thread and he's been a regularly contributing part of the community for a while. I'll just stop responding to the off-topic bitching.

Don't know if it was mentioned but the OG Xbox disc of Battlefield 2 Modern Combat will be read as the 360 version and allow you to download it.  Just tried it and it worked.
