Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.
On Xbox One, Gold trials of any length work for sales and Games with Gold.  You must be an active Gold subscriber (paid or trial) to play Games with Gold purchases.
  • On Xbox 360, you must have at least a 1 month Gold subscription for sales and Games with Gold.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.

[*]All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every Tuesday.
[*]ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...

Gosh diggity, I can't decide whether or not to buy the Forza Horizon 2 DLC bundle. I've played the demo and liked it.  Just bought a XB1 2 weeks ago and grabbed the Forza 6 Ultimate bundle for $45.

I was really excited to pick up Book of Unwritten Tales 360 version for $1.99. Such a great deal!

...Oh, I already own it? Oh, from when it was $9.99 instead? Ok then.

*cries softly*

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/296710/NPD_has_been_underestimating_digital_game_sales_since_at_least_2010.php?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

NPD has been wrong for many years regarding Digital sales for video games and has made massive corrections.

As of the end of last year 31% of Video Game sales were boxed goods in the US.

This is *HUGE* news. Basically we are the point where 7 out of every 10 people buy their game brand new digitally.

Edit: Re-reading the article I should correct myself: We are probably at a point above 5 out of of every 10 users, we are still a few years behind 7 out of 10 users for most games. But I have to wonder for some of the big titles we are approaching a 6 out of 10 average in the US for certain titles.

RIP Target clearance threads. RIP Gamestop. RIP Walmart electronics (the video game section anyways) in five+ years?

This means less and less people care about re-selling/trading/flipping and the like.

Microsoft was only about ten years too early with that digital only console.

I for one, welcome our overlord Bloomy.

Edit: Also of note Microsoft is going to start sharing data with NPD for digital sales on the next report. So the numbers should be more accurate on their side. Sony has been mum on digital sales and Nintendo only reveals here and there (they are way behind according to Zhuge, but revenue should change since they will be charging for online starting this fall/winter. Rumored to be $25 in Japan a year at least).

Civ. Revolution dlc sale tonight? Oh wait, hell hasn't frozen over yet, and its not raining men..... Hallelujah.... It's raining men!

:wall: sometimes i hate my brain....

I would have been cool with the XB1 as originally conceived. Buy a disc game and it installs and you don't need the disc? So basically, digital games at (usually) cheaper retail prices.

Damn... I was looking at my achievements the other night and clicked on BO3 for the X1... I played 924 hours in MP. I guess I got my money's worth out of that game.

Gamestop will die for sure if they don't manage to make huge strides with their gamer knickknack stuff or somehow making a successful digital side, but I don't think big box stores will totally drop games for a while. They are already basically meaningless to stores like Target and Walmart, they just help enforce their "buy everything here" angle. Big stores already adjusted their game selling years ago, they only keep best sellers in stock, and generally only carry games for like a year after release. They also don't bother with niche stuff, games from small publishers or big collector's editions.

With Microsoft, I think the original Xbone pitch would still be shot down if it happened today. Even as continent as digital has become for many people, the daily online check in alone would be a deal breaker for a lot of people, and the idiotic plan for DRM on used physical games is still insulting. They really needed to dial it back a few notches, and not have faith that console gamers would just instantly jump on board to the PC game model, especially since XBL isn't even close to Steam when it comes to prices. Everything about that launch screamed arrogance from being top dog during last generation and the huge success that Kinect 1.0 managed to have, combined with the seemingly completely-out-of-touch-with-consumers design philosophies that I think came from all these employees being in Seattle in an extremely tech savvy company. If the Microsoft of 2017 were in charge of that launch, we'd have a completely different situation now.

Honestly, if Best Buy allowed GCU discounts on digital, I'd probably buy all digital. But the savings for day one physical combined with some trade in consolation outweigh digital for day one purchases.

That said, I have replaced a lot of physical games when digital drops enough...along with games I didn't care enough to buy day one.

But if MS 2017 were in charge back then we most likely wouldn't of seen Backwards Compatibility and there is no way someone would of built something as crazy as the Scorpio. Getting their arse handed to them by people jumping ship to the PS4 was actually great for me in the long run.

That's not what I was excited about with the original concept. It was the gamesharing. Remember the plan to let up to five of your friends use your digital library? That would have been great. I think they mentioned a few years ago that was still in the works but I think it's probably fallen by the wayside. And I know it's able to done with one person, but I don't feel like switching my home console designation over to someone else's.

Yup, I went digital because of game sharing.  That's more of a discount than disc because me and my bro could play the brand new game at the same time on our own Xboxes from different locations using our own profiles at the same time.

Yeah, that would have been awesome, too. I think they would eventually have implemented the refunds they're considering now, too. And I know a while back they were polling users about the ability to sell back digital games (albeit for a small amount).

Seeing Bloomy post his insider info about the sale hours before it happens, is like seeing your date drop something on their facebook feed stating they'll meet up later w/their friends cause the date will run short cause they ain't expecting much. Hope has been extinguished and expectations are extremely low now.

That NPD data update is kinda shocking. I knew digital purchases were rising, just not at that rate. Purchasing game discs/carts will become a niche thing to do. Like how music has cd/vinyl. The times they are a changin

Did anybody really read the data?

( "digital" here includes "subscriptions, digital full games, digital add-on content, mobile apps, and social network gaming")

Folks, if it's a surprise that people spend tons more money on apps and social network gaming then I don't know what to say to you. Look at all the F2P games that wind up soaking hundreds of dollars out of people, all the DLC that gets sold for games, etc. That's all being counted into those stats.

Anyone have thoughts on the generically titled Kingdom: New Lands?

Hopefully, it just means we're getting an EA pub sale but we'll still get good weekly deals.

Re: Digital game sales, there are also more games than ever not getting physical releases at all, or getting them but not being available at major retailers. And like was said earlier, if you want something that's not Madden, CoD or is a year old or more, Walmart or Target often won't have it. It's like stores are stocking less games due to rising digital sales, but that only leads to digital sales rising even more.

EDIT: Written before I saw reaper's post. ^ Not gonna go back and change it all on my phone and I still think all of that is a factor, although f2p add on sales are YUUUGE.

Actually, to compete, they need to have decent discounts on preorders. That would make a huge difference over discounts on old games many people already own.
Both really. The X1 has built up a decent amount of Indie Titles and some of them have never gone on sale or if they have not even at a decent sales percentage. We have $20 games on the XBox which has been $5 games on Steam.

pre-order discounts would be nice. I would probably buy a lot at 10% off on day one to have digitally. It would even give me more to complain about when it goes on sale for less before I get around to playing it.

Even if it didn't include mobile apps, social network gaming and subscriptions your probably looking at worst a 50% digital conversion on PS4 and X1. The most recent title to CROSS the threshold in the US was For Honor. I think in 5 years we are going to see a 80%/20% in terms of digital sales for games. Actually, the only company behind digitally is Nintendo who had a whopping 19% digital revenue last year. That will of course go up with their subscription service that will drop in the fall/winter.

I'm really curious to hear what the Halo 5 digital numbers were at launch considering it's anemic US showing on the NPD charts, and dis spearing mostly from the charts overall. Halo 5 being their second biggest first party title on the system. Same for Gears 4 numbers. Those are both games most people wouldn't trade in, or so I would like to think.

Just making sure that before everyone shoots their load we were all on the same page about what the data actually said.

Indeed. I also corrected myself and can agree on a 5 out of every 10 ratio going forward from last month, at least in the US for the big sellers. I think we are a few years off from 7 out of 10 but we are approaching that. Some titles like Halo and probably Destiny 2 will approach a 6 or higher but the majority of the titles will still be on the lower end.

Anyways these sales are garbage so far at least on the X1 side. Thanks Bloomy.

I liked THPS5. Some of the later levels and missions are ridiculous but it's a passable THPS game now that it's been fixed up. My brother lost my disc copy so I'm gonna try to talk him into fessing up some money he owes me for that disc and get it digitally. But even so, I totally got $20 worth of play out of it. WAY better than the THPS HD remake on 360.
