This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

I'm also having a problem the GonD Alan Wake. About a week ago I tried to redownload it, but in it's games section it showed a price instead of the option to redownload it. Clicking on the price asked to confirm the purchase, so I stopped there. I decided to wait until my balance was less than the $20 it costs to buy the game, and I will try to start the download from my download history.

My balance is now under $20, but I haven't tried downloading it yet. I'm going to eventually do it through my download history; if I now try to do it through the games section it tells me to add a payment option.
I had also dl Alan Wake on my second HD a while back and here's what's happening, btw, I'm logged into my Live acct. When I searched for the game to dl on my primary HD it comes up as not purchased. I looked at my acct online and it's not purchased. I switched HDs and searched for the game and it says it's purchased but my acct online is still showing not purchased.

Just checked and it's the same for me; Alan Wake Games on Demand shows up as $19.99 instead of "Already purchased." Luckily I haven't deleted it off my HDD. I need to get back to that game and finish it sometime.

I have to check this. I finished the game but still need to go through on nightmare mode. I started it but I got stuck in a mess of takens and had to take a break. Stucky is much harder on nightmare mode.

Sort of like if you buy a remixed CD, you aren't also getting the "original tracks" as well.

EW includes EU as a framework, then adds more missions, another threat from Exault, and more resources (genetic mods, mechanized soldiers). You can not choose to play EU through EW as it was originally released, no. But even with the added elements, which - imo - are fairly substantial. the main plot - of responding to an alien invasion - remains unchanged. EU is great, EW is even better.
fyi, Enemy Within is $25 used at GS. With PUR and the birthday coupon that brings it down to $18 + tax. In case anyone is low on hard drive space.
Thanks to both of you. Time to try the last of my 1200-point codes from The Sale That Shall Not Be Named, I think.

Today I went to my download history section on the Xbox 360 console, and I was able to redownload Alan Wake through it. The game's details page now says Play Now, and the game loads up (I only tried while connected to Xbox Live). I might have been over cautious when I decided to wait until my balance was low enough that a purchase would not be possible.

The first Bioshock is one of the greatest games I've ever played. Anyone on the fence, I urge you to buy it and play it BEFORE Bioshock 2 or Infinite.

I got some good used game deals at Gamestop recently. Everything was CIB with manual, unless noted differently. Prices are USD.

Duke Nukem Forever - 3.59 (They had it for 4.99 "New" missing the manual)
The Club - 1.79
Gears of War (2 disc platinum hits) - 2.69
Gears of War 2 - 2.69
Prey - .89
Dead Rising (disc only) - 4.49
Crackdown (disc only - 2.99
Fable 3 - 4.99
Mass Effect 2 - 4.99

I really want Burnout Paradise again, but when I asked if they had it, he said it's 17.99 used and 19.99 new. I don't understand why most older games are dirt cheap, but some are the same price they were 5 years ago.

This times a thousand. I wanted to play Lord of the Rings Conquest not too long ago and it was in the 30 dollar region used. Yeah, I didn't want it THAT bad lol

I'm loving Farcry3.  The story is fun and it's been a looong time since I've found myself sucked into a game.  Just started playing co-op with a friend and it's like another game.  Both are just fun.  Highly recommended @$15.  If you want the disc, Best Buy has it on sale for $15 this week as well.

WTF. That's just ridiculous. They even have relatively new games (from 2012 - 2013) for sub $10 prices. I'm no pricing expert, but as far as I know Burnout Paradise isn't a rare gem of a game, or anything. Same with LOTR Conquest.

Gamestop pisses me off so much.

***EDIT***
Here is a related Gamestop rant I wrote in the PS2 sale thread:

If you just look and see what they have on the floor you probably arent seeing much of what they actually have.. after flipping through stacks of rockband and guitar hero.. I asked an assosiciate if they had a game I had seen on their inventory, I then asked for a list of every ps2 game they had which he provided.. what they had on the floor was a small fraction of what they had on hand in drawers begind the counter..
Man, fuck Gamestop. If this is true (which I believe you that it is) this is shady as hell. The bait and switch they do with all used games now really pisses me off too. I hand them a clean case with a mint manual, and they set that case on the counter, and pull a POS one out of a drawer and quickly put it in the bag...hoping you won't notice.

fuck that. The first time this happened, I went back in the store and politely asked If I could have the cases I picked out. Now I just tell them before they ring it up, but one employee in particular still sneaks in crappy cases AFTER agreeing to give me the one off the shelf. It's not like I'm asking for the only good case they have either. These are games they have at least a dozen copies of on the shelf and more in drawers.

Today the guy tried to give me a generic case with a game they had a bunch of copies of with real cases, and he tried to short me a bonus disc with a game. I wouldn't have even known if the game disk he gave me hadn't been cracked and scratched to hell. I got back in line, and the manager gave me a good disk and the bonus disc that they "didn't have".

Is this on the site?

Sometimes (most times), it will show a game as full price for me even if I have already bought it but it's in my DL history.

P.S. Finish the game, it's an amazing game that really does deserve a proper sequel.

While Gamestop does piss me off as well, Conquest costs over $30 used everywhere. Same with Burnout Paradise being about $20.

Crackdown is worth 2.99.....all kinds of fun!

I got it when it was free. Crackdown is fun but hard as shit. At least to me. Eliminating the first couple of gangs wasn't too bad but once you get to the Chinese/Russian cartels, holy shit. Those sons of bitches were mauling me. Maybe I suck at the game but I just gave up on it at that point lol. Anybody who got 100% achievement score on that thing, I salute you.

I couldn't either, but it was fun trying. My 6 year old son though, he swept right on through them.....pissed me off. :D

yeah man. Remember when we were kids and we had infinite patience to blast through rage-inducing games like Battletoads and TMNT for the NES? The 6-8 year old me was an awesome gamer. Now that I'm an adult, if I can't get through it after a few tries, screw it, on to the next game in the backlog lol.

Same exact feeling here. When I was a kid, I had nearly infinite time and patience and only a handful of games. As an adult and a CAG, I have very limited time, but an infinite amount of games in the backlog.

Didn't someone say there's a way to avoid paying tax on XBLA purchases? I bought a $5 code from Amazon and added it to my account. Hopped on the 360 and tried to buy Blood Dragon, but it was rejected because tax would've pushed the total above $5.

Hey eastx,

I think that the conversation is right now that there is no clear answer.

I think we all agree that the points that were converted to dollars back in the fall do not get taxed (in general, with some edge cases where people seemed to get charged tax).

It seems that other than that, it can vary, possibly by state, and possibly by method of purchase (who knows, maybe even possibly depending on what types of MS $ cards are used).

I live in PA. When I was running low on points, I tried using my paypal to buy something. I got charged tax for that. Then, for the next purchase, I bought some $ cards off CrazyGameTime, and once I redeemed those and used my MS credit, I haven't been getting taxed on purchases again. I don't know if it mattered, but I did have a small amount left from my converted points in my credit.

So, unless I missed any posts, which I don't think I did, I think it's still up in the air why some are getting taxed and some aren't.

Hi guys:

I might be able to shed some light on the tax situation when you purchase from XBLA. Let's take amazon as an example. I live in WA where both the main sales offices for Amazon. & MS reside. In regards to Amazon, I get charged state tax because my credit cards have a billing address in WA, same place where they're main sales office reside. Now amazon does have distribution warehouses in other states but since they are not sales offices , you won't get charged state tax if your billing address is in that state since it is only a distribution center & not a sales center. This used to be true of MS as well. Living in WA we got charged sales tax on XBLA purchases since it was they're main office as well as main sales center. In recent years that's changed. People report in other states that they are now getting taxed on XBLA purchases outside of WA. I believe this is due to the fact of MS opening Microsoft Store's in multiple states. Those stores count as a sales office and for some reason it applies to XBLA. So simply put if you live in a WA state or a state that has a local MS Sales Office like a Microsoft Store (Note: MS has sales centers in other states that are not Microsoft Stores, not sure what the proper name is for them), you will be charged tax for XBLA. I've worked at MS main Campus as a contractor for years and have many friends working in the many different parts of the Xbox division. None of them had a clear answer to the XBLA tax question, but this is kinda what we figured out during lunch. Hope this helps with the caveat that I could be completely wrong. FYI - Nintendo has their main campus two blocks from MS main campus so even though we are so close to all these gaming companies we get charged close to %10 sales tax on all our gaming. At least we get to see the halo warthog driving around all the time :)

I wondered at this as well. I had even looked up to see if we had a store in PA, and there is one, but it's considered a "specialty" store, so maybe it doesn't "count". I'm not sure why purchases with my credit card with a billing address in PA would get taxed though, and not MS $ that I redeemed and use on my PA account. So I still think there are some weird differences that don't completely make sense.

I remember having a slightly difficult time with the second gang until I killed someone who was carrying a rocket launcher (don't remember if it was standard or homing). Just pick up the gun and make sure you store it, so you can use it anytime. That made it much easier.

And collect orbs they make you more powerful

Regarding the tax thing: has anyone who gets taxed on purchases made with MS credit tried switching your address to something in Delaware?  This at least used to work with PSN purchases with PSN credit.

For Crackdown I found it a lot easier if you find someone to play with in coop.

Yep...so the people that get onto us "new school wuse" gamers that "can't handle" real difficulty...we used to...now we just have better things to do with our time (like collect games instead of actually play them....)

Sidenote...just finished deadlight last night....not sure what people were talking about the pacing of the game and the style changing 2/3s in and stuff. I rated the game 3 stars due to constantly dying from either the controls not doing what I told them to or ambushes designed to kill you just for the sake of making you replay sections until you mezmorized what you had to do. That said...worth my $3 during the holiday sales. Kind of reminded me of a cross between Out of this world (another world) and old POP/Flashback/Blackthorne

I wanted to give a shout out to Rollobobo, for giving me a great price on the Alan Wake dlc.....looks like I will be firing up my flashlight and looking for manuscript pages tonight :D

I had been waiting for that dlc to go on sale during the countdown in December and it never did. If the main game goes on sale again, grab it. I recommend it highly.

I'll throw my $.02 in regarding tax. As I understand it, a company does not charge tax in a state it does not have a physical presence in, be it a warehouse, B&M, offices etc. For example, Amazon did not originally operate in CA hence one of my reasons for buying so much from them. The states then went after Amazon for its unfair advantage to B&M and all the revenue they weren't getting from the taxes. Amazon then opened a distribution center in CA. I know there's more to it but you get the gist of it.

Also, any gift card purchases does not have tax, but any items purchased using gift cards could be taxed. GC are in a sense treated as cash.

As for why some are taxed and others not on Live, that's still up in the air.

Is Far Cry 2 worth for $5??
The gameplay is pretty good but the lack of fast travel hurts the game overall. Also enemies respawn so that can be a drag. Otherwise it is a very fun game. If you don't mind those two issues then it is definitely worth $5.

Hard to say.

I enjoyed what I played of it, the premise is very smart. The world is well done and the characters are somewhat interesting.

However the very large map becomes a problem because you seem to drive forever with nothing to do and not a lot of motivation to go there. The scenery is pretty and that helps the drive, but the story gets lost... I don't know.

I payed $12 for the game years ago and it was worth that to me.

Thing is, can you go to a store at this very moment and buy a physical copy for $5?

Probably.

There's technically fast travel. It's the god awful bus system they use. There's also the whole medication shot you have to take that ends up a burden the entire game. >.<

I didn't mind the malaria pills as long as some were available. Completely forgot about the bus system as fast travel. Still remember driving for long periods of time before getting to my next destination. This was something I was glad to see remedied in Far Cry 3.

My Far Cry 2 breaking point was a few hours after my first sidekick died. I had no idea who he was, why he showed up or that I was supposed to keep him alive.

The game just threw some guy at me who died saving my life, I assumed it was in-story and an unavoidable death. NOPE, just had no idea that a new game mechanic had suddenly activated at the same time a random encounter showed up.

Hate that in games.

But every time I think of the game it still makes me want to play it... something alluring about it.

There aren't many busses in Africa, especially in areas with armed men that attack on sight. Part of the whole problem of trying to make the game real in some parts (cheap crappy weapons in Africa, little fast travel, cars break easily, etc.) while keeping other parts too unrealistic (respawning enemies quickly, animal A.I., magically golden weapons that never break or jam). The game never quite finds a good balance.

I would recommend you stay far far away from Dark Souls. You'd hate it.

Started Bioshock last night, and I've got to say, it's so good. Loving the story. Can't believe it took me years to pick it up. Also didn't realize that it was a thrilled, as I started it before going to bed and in the dark.

Thanks for all the positive recommendations. Grabbed that, the sequal, and Minerva's Den. Should last me 'till the next sale

Bioshock is a great game for playing in the dark fo sho

Really hoping for some good sales this week. Actually liked last week sales as well, but talked myself out of spec ops and Mafia.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned this before but you can borrow or buy used the bioshock ultimate rapture edition and just install all of the dlc per game and you'd be set. Thinking of buying at least Bioshock 2 since I never got to complete it and have funds to spare.
