This thread will maintain a list of all current and upcoming sales and markdowns on the Xbox Live Marketplace / Xbox Games Store for the USA.  YMMV in other regions.  If non-US sales are listed, they will be marked with their applicable region(s).

Please note:

  • You cannot currently buy any Xbox 360 content on xbox.com using your account balance, you can only use an active credit card or PayPal. To use your balance, you must make purchases on your console.  Unfortunately, even "purchasing" free content through the web site like trials requires an alternative method of payment tied to your account, though adding an empty MasterCard / Visa gift card that is registered for online purchases will work.  Xbox One games can be purchased on the web site with your account balance, but DLC cannot.
  • Some sales are intended for Gold subscribers only, as noted within each section.  This requires being a paid subscriber or within a console-activated "1 month complimentary Gold trial" account.  Neither 48 hour trials, 14 day trials nor free weekends qualify.
  • All known sales and information on sales should make their way into the OP. Major Nelson usually updates his blog with new sales information every other Tuesday.
  • ALL OFFERS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE! No information within this thread can or should be construed as accurate (or still valid), therefore ...
  • Always verify Xbox Live Marketplace prices before your purchase!
  • Spend wisely, have fun, and enjoy!

These are excellent deals this week. I haven't really followed Xbox Live sales but I hope I haven't missed out on too much. I just bought Tales and considering buying Dark Souls for $5. I had a lot of trouble with Demons Souls but considering giving the sequel another try.

I hope i haven't been missing out on great sales like these all this time. For $5 I could rent most of these games, owning them is even sweeter.

Hmmm does anyone know if the GoD Tales of Vesperia would just access the normal save files made from the physical disk version? I know some digital games aren't compatible.

I rented Tales around five years ago and I still have the physical copy's save file on my hard drive. I'm currently downloading the game which is at 8% so if you don't have an answer by the time mine is downloaded I will let you know.

Nothing much interesting for me this week. Slightly interested in Future Soldier, but I still really wanting a racing game. Feeling silly for passing on NFS games in sales earlier.

Dark Souls was a pretty big financial success AFAIK. Not sure why it seems to constantly be marked down, but I don't think it's because anybody's desperate.

I, for one, picked up both Dark Souls 1 for cheap a while ago on a sale (10$ maybe?) and got The Witcher 2 for free (back when they were giving out promo copies to a lot of people who work for gaming websites/blogs/YouTube channels). Dark Souls is fascinating, and while some years ago I would have loved its difficulty, it's just not a game for my patience nowadays. It's got a lot of issues, from the constantly respawning enemies every time you go to a bonfire (which are the checkpoints, for those unfamiliar with the game), the terrible hit detection, the glitches, the complete confusion the game leaves you in regarding where to go and what to do, that playing without a guide or some help is nearly impossible. The storyline looks interesting and the places are lovely, but it's got way too many issues, and all this trial and error (or reliance on guides, which I never do if not for finding ridicolous stuff like the 430 or so flags in Assassin's Creed 1) is just too much for me with the massive backlog I own. If you feel you want to get into a MASSIVE game with tons of content but that is also a pain in the ass, just go for it, besides I'd probably recommend the game to even those who may not like it: I mean, it's 5$, deep inside you know you bought far worse than that for such prices. As for The Witcher 2, I'm more of an action-RPG guy so I didn't enjoy as much as I should have, but the graphics are great, the storyline well-done, but again this is pretty difficult, at first the combats feel like chess or something, so many things to do and think about while you perform the actions, but when you get used to it it's a great and unique RPG. These two are definitely "love or hate" type of games, I recommend checking some gameplays on YouTube or something because they're not your typical "anyone can beat it" games.

Oh, and confession time, I never seriously played any Final Fantasy game. I love the game's artstyle, but I'm not big on JRPGs, and FF always looked pretty boring to me frankly, despite all the amazing fiction and art that came out from it (Advent Children, the OSTs, etc.). So, obviously, I did not play FF XIII. At this price, I am kinda tempted by XIII-2, since I'm also reading that it's fairly easy on the achievement side as well, plus it seems more action-packed than XIII. So, given all these premises, should I get XIII-2? It's a price I gladly bite into, and the game's art style is constantly inviting me to play FF games, yet I can't get myself to play it with what the FF games usually play like (talking about FF7-era stuff mostly). Should I give it a shot? Is it really more action-based? Is the storyline enjoyable if I have no idea what happened in XIII or the previous games?

13 and 13-2 will not be enjoyable to you if you did not like FF7. I would recommend Tales of Vesperia. The fighting is nothing like Final Fantasy there. It's also the best JRPG of the generation. FF13 is all menu driven combat like a traditional JRPG. Vesperia has a sort of timer that is kind of like that but you have the control to run around and do as you wish. There are menus for item and spell usage as seen in the video.

Thanks for the feedback. I was intrigued about Tales as well, but unfortunately, the European marketplace does not have it, I guess it wasn't published around here. Would like to get into a nice RPG, even Japanese one if it's good, and already owning DS and TW2 I thought I might just bite on XIII-2, but reading this I probably won't - no need to inflate my backlog with a game I would not even enjoy, the menu-based combats are exactly what I can't stand about most JRPGs (or most old non-action RPGs, for that matter). Tales does look good, so I'll see if it's possible to buy it and play it through a US account, but it'll probably be region-locked (tried this with DeathSmiles 2X from the US marketplace once with no luck).

Didn't realize you weren't American. You should be able to buy the physical disc for the European version but it will be a good bit more than 5 dollars.

Edi: they have it...what region are you in?

Is Tales of Vesperia good for someone who is picky on RPG's in general? I'm not really a fan of the "oh, just hit me as I'm standing" gameplay and prefer a game where you have a chance of not getitng hit (i.e. Parasite Eve). Although I will admit I have liked Final Fantasy 7, Super Mario RPG, and Legend of Dragoon in the past. I also recall liking a demo of a PS2 Dragon Quest game. I think I liked many of these games because I was more into the story than the gameplay.

Anyway, thoughts?

I'm not really a fan of the "oh, just hit me as I'm standing" gameplay and prefer a game where you have a chance of not getitng hit (i.e. Parasite Eve). Although I will admit I have liked Final Fantasy 7, Super Mario RPG, and Legend of Dragoon in the past. I also recall liking a demo of a PS2 Dragon Quest game. I think I liked many of these games because I was more into the story than the gameplay.

Anyway, thoughts?
Look at the gameplay video I posted.

Didn't realize you weren't American. You should be able to buy the physical disc for the European version but it will be a good bit more than 5 dollars.

Edi: they have it...what region are you in?

If the game's available elsewhere in Europe, I might just be able to pick it up with a different country account and make it work, as long as it's a European region like Italy is. Bummer that the UK version is basically twice as much as the US one, I'll see if it works.

If you're a core JRPG fan, or want the best possible experience you can get, don't get Tales of Vesperia for the 360.  It's tempting, looking at the price w/gold, but the if you have the PS3 version, it has full voice acting (twice the script of the 360 vers) new characters, mini games, quests, gameplay features, skills, etc.  Overall getting the PS3 version when its own sale IMO would be better, but hey if you're just looking for a cheap JRPG experience go ahead with the 360 version

To everyone that told me to pick up Spec Ops: The Line last week. Thank you! The story is amazing and even though the gameplay is nothing new, the game itself is spectacular. I'm almost to the end now.

I have a disc copy of Vesperia that I picked up years ago.  I'd love to have it on demand on the HDD, but I'm worried about what will happen to the service down the road.  Is anyone else?

MS has said they are committed to supporting the 360 through 2016, but what happens after that?  Will we able to download GoD titles?  Will need to maintain backups of our downloaded titles?  Is 320gb the largest drive we will ever be able to have without a hacked machine?

These kinds of questions make me want to hang on to my old discs despite how cheap the GoD versions are.

My guess is that once the servers go down, you'll have to hope your content lasts. I'm not even sure it's possible to back up your games.

Saw it after I posted. The free roaming I liked. I'm not sure what to think of the item system as the player was very fast using it. That's another thing: How easy are the menus when it comes to upgrading/navigating?

I didn't realize there was a PS3 version of this. Thanks for the heads-up.

Even without the voice acting, that version sounds better. Is it true that the 360 version doesn't have extra minigames and quests?

From what I have seen in youtube vids and read about online, this really isn't worth the effort or cost of importing the PS3 version. Not to mention you will be at an even bigger loss if you can't read Japanese :)

My advice would be to first decide on whether the inexpensive cost of the GoD version this week is worth the HDD space it consumes and the risk that you won't be able to download it again after 2016. Otherwise, you can find this disc for $20 or less in the secondary market through Amazon or Ebay.

The guy is telling him to look for a sale on the PS3 version which is already insanely overpriced. I would just buy the 360 version for under $5 as opposed to paying $40 to import it.

How much HDD space are we talking here? If it's more than 20 GB, I will have to pass.

Looking around I noticed this game is part of a series. I saw Tales of Symphonia listed. I have that on Gamecube but never played it.

Knowing this, is there anything story related in the series that I should know before playing Vesperia?

I immediately bought Vesperia when I saw the price.  I've been considering it for years at $17, so $5 is a no brainer.  D&D, on the other hand, looks like old Neo-Geo graphics with Gauntlet-style gameplay.  I'm not a big graphics guy, but that's 2 knocks against it, so I'm passing.

Tales games aren't generally connected. It's like Final Fantasy.

The 360 version still has a ton of content, and feels very polished and complete. I've played through it twice and I'm looking at a further two playthroughs to finish off the 1000 gamerscore (someday!). It's too bad that we never got a localized version of the enhanced PS3 release but I would definitely not let that put you off of the version we do have.

Wow, the new Dead Rising 3 patch is 13GBs.

Really not digging this new trend of including DLC files in patches to the game, then making the actual DLC purchase only an unlock code.  Means you basically have to download the DLC and have it stored on your hard drive even if you never plan to actually purchase and play the DLC.  Same stuff has been happening for a while on the Vita where memory is even more of a concern.

I agree, ToV is already long enough and contains more than enough content on the Xbox 360 and for $5 vs $40 it's a no brainier. The game has never been this cheap before. Plus, most people here can't read or speak Japanese what's the point?

Maybe it's time to stop downloading patches?

Not really a viable option since most patches do feature some gameplay fixes which are always nice to have. Also not at all viable for online games since you can't go online without the most recent patch installed.

It sort of makes sense with some multiplayer stuff instead of having compatibility packs, but I can't imagine you'll be able to co-op through the new shit in DR3 unless both of you buy the DLC, so I don't really see the point. Though supposedly the patch fixes the garbage framerate so it must have some legit updates in there.

Probably so the person that owns the DLC can still craft new weapons while playing with a person that does. Instead of breaking up the dlc into a separate pack just for weapons/clothing, they kept it all together.

I'd think a smaller compatibility pack would be better if only for the saved bandwidth from the large amount of people who will never buy the DLC. If Capcom/MS want to burn money, more power to them I guess.

It sounds like the patch is also a compatibility pack. I wonder if these DLC files could have been stored on the game disc, but after all the flack Capcom got over Street Fighter X Tekken they decided not to store locked content on the disc anymore.

I would think so too. If I see 13 GB, I run away. I've bought some 5 and 6 GB downloads and that's about my upper limit.

Have any of you made a $1 or even free download  and regretted it?  I recently purchased Sexy Island Adventure for $1 and I feel like I was robbed.

It makes sense in multiplayer games to make sure that everyone has the newest content installed for compatibility purposes, even if they haven't paid to use it themselves. 13GB does seem way excessive though!

Don't know if anyone has posted this but xbox one has its first deal of the week. Powerstar golf is $5 off from $19.99 to $14.99.

That causes a shitstorm because it means the content was already finished by the time the game went to print. DLC was originally designed to be additional content added after development of the main game is finished. Before DLC existed devs tried to add extra stuff if they finished early, or make the game run better.

If DR3 had had day-one/on-disc DLC along with it's terrible 15-20 FPS frame-rate and low resolution, it would have brought a huge blow-back on Capcom when they've just started to get away from the practice that upset so many fans. It being rushed for the Xbone launch probably killed the possibility of such DLC by itself anyways.

It's not something I'm happy about, but it's also not all that dire. I have my One set in that standby mode or whatever (looks to be powered off, but will turn on if you say "Xbox On") and all patching and whatnot will be done automatically while I'm not playing. So it's not like you have to sit around waiting for a 13GB download. The patch also doesn't eat 13GB off of your HD. The installed game data went from 19 GB to 24 GB, so they are being at least slightly sensitive to space concerns. Again, it's not something I'm looking forward to, but on systems where full games have to be loaded onto the console anyway, people are just going to get more comfortable with having to delete stuff off of their HD to make room for more stuff.

I'm limited to 10 GB per month except from 2am to 8am, so this would be a huge problem for me. Also, I'm on satellite Internet. It's infinitely faster than dial-up, but I'd still be waiting for hours to get it downloaded.

Is that a Gold only discount? The web page for the game doesn't indicate a discount, and the sales web pages still show last week's stuff.
