XBLA - Age Of Booty - 800pts

I've been really enjoying this one... I got into an awesome team last night, and played a good twenty-matches back to back. Teamwork is so essential in this game, and when you find a good group the game really shines... probably my favorite online XBLA game thus far.
Did you do each challenge with each difficulty?
Each of the "difficulties" is a totally separate challenge. There are 21 (if I remember right) total challenges, broken down into 7 of each difficulty, and each has a completely different mission.

Yes I did all the easy challenges on release day then finished up the rest over the weekend. I will gladly pay for an expansion on this. I wish this would get deeper. Like have different types of towns so we can spawn more ships. Mainly I would like control of more than one ship cause the AI just plain stinks in the later challenges.

For now I'll just work on getting those 10 wins to finish up the achievements.

In the challenges, the computer "partner" A.I. blows. They always follow you so you get hosed as you try to protect one city and take over another at the same time.

Online is quite the blast though if the players use their mics.

Yeah, that is one of the major knocks against it. They really should of taken the time to optimize the A.I a little bit, I'm having a hard time completing the later challenges because of it.

the challenge that is giving me fits is the medium one on the 4th page (I believe) where your a slow ass powerful ship and there is only two cities.

Yeah I'm having trouble completing that one, I skipped it for now.

Ok this game has some great moments and some are even with the AI. I had 25 secs to get one more town so our team would be in the lead so I went for the town in the inlet on the lower left, hard lv3, which got the attention of patrolling AI. I broke off my attack and blocked the opening to the inlet and my AI buddy came behind the enemy AI and flanked him. I let him in and did some strategic moving around and the enemy AI put down a whirlwind on the right hex of the town. Sure enough my AI, both of them, went right into the trap and then another whirlwind appeard on the spot where I was so I quickly got out of there and the enemy AI, last one, went into the whirlwind! I was the only one left with very little health and then the town was captured 75% by the orange AI and I took the town with 4 secs left. Man!

Avatar support was just added, maybe that's what the update I just downloaded gave us?! You have an avatar pic come up whenever you take a town or upgrade ship/town and when you win you see your avatar on the ship laughing in an "oh I got you good UNO kind of way". ^^

Exclusivity maybe ... I enjoy making maps and auto downloading the new ones when you go into the map editor. That's a cool feature and surprised me the first time lol.

I bought this game about a week ago and finished all of the challenges. Holy hell this game is fun. I want more challenges!

I played the trial with a friend of mine. It was really fun, but I would only buy this game if more people actually played it online.

I've been waiting for this game to be on some sort of sale, but i may not be able to wait much longer. the demo was really fun. how many maps are there to download?

Just got the Impulse newsletter and it looks like they're selling the PC version is 5 bucks. I love this game so much, like Peggle I think having it on my laptop would be perfect. I've been making some maps recently, man I love the editor!
the pc version is broken and Certain Affinity and Capcom are doing nothing to address the issues. You would pretty much be throwing your money away.

Ack, too late. So how is it broken?

Anybody else grab this in this week's sale? I've really been enjoying it. Cleared everything except the final hard challenge, which is a bit of a bitch, but still fun -- a testament to the quality of this game.

Also have not been able to get the double bomb achievement. Any suggestions on the best place/scenario to pull this off?

My husband and I tried playing online co-op, but the other folks we were playing with were so ridiculously better than us. It didn't help that one set of players were waiting until we had used up our health beating a city down, then they would pounce on us, beat us, and claim the city.

One of the only times in my life I've felt like throwing a controller.

Yea, anyone have any tips for the final hard challenge? I played that almost until the timer ran out but one of the teams snagged their 3rd city (or is it 4th?) with just a few seconds to spare.

For the double bomb I waited until two CPU ships were attacking the same target (or capturing a city) and set a bomb behind them. This is probably easiest on those maps where there's a central city that gets beat up on a lot.

Took about 60 tries but I did finally beat that last challenge. For a long time, it looked like trying to win with 3 towns and running out the clock was the best strategy. But I lost in the last 15 seconds many times with this (a controller throwing moment, to be sure). But here is how I ultimately ended up doing it and what I would recommend to others:

- In terms of upgrading your ship, put a star each into speed and cannons. From there, put next two into speed, then max cannons, THEN worry about hull strength.
- DIE AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. Early on, you need all the resources you can get to upgrade, and you can't afford to be losing them by dying in pointless fights. Just focus on picking up the random crate drops, sinking item ships (for resource stealing items), and accumulating resources from your first town (see below). If someone tries to take your town(s), especially when you only have one or two stars on them, let 'em. You can easily take those one-star towns back when they sail away. TIP: When taking towns or fighting other ships, keep moving constantly. Decreases the number of hits they're able to land on you.
- Claim the town immediately below your starting point (forget the name) and upgrade it to three stars as soon as possible. Once you get it to three stars and full health, the AI pirates will leave it alone most of the time, especially if you're anywhere close. That plus your early maxed speed will give you time to get back and defend it if someone does try anything.
- As early as possible (basically, when you feel like you're fast enough or your first town's strong enough) go get the double-gold town in the center of the map. You need gold to upgrade town defenses, and this is one of the only places to get it quickly and consistently. Hang out down there until it's upgraded enough for you to venture elsewhere. While you're doing so, pick off the random gold villages that pop up in that area to further pad your coffers. Keep in mind, even with three stars, this town will still be highly contested, and you may lose it a couple times. But it's easy to take back when it's one star. Just watch out for enemies that have maxed out their cannons.
- Once you have those two towns shored up, you'll find that there are two or three one-star towns farther out (I favored the one directly to the south that no one had even tried to take 2/3 through the match and an enemy one-star town to the right of that). If you time it right, you can grab both of those real quick and take the match.

For the double bomb I waited until two CPU ships were attacking the same target (or capturing a city) and set a bomb behind them. This is probably easiest on those maps where there's a central city that gets beat up on a lot.
This was the last achievement I got. I think I got it on the level where the item ships only drop bombs. You have to get it right at the beginning of that match, otherwise the enemy ships upgrade their hulls and cannot be sunk with one bomb.

I got the PSN quite awhile back, because of the 9 free map packs it had available. If the XBLA community is there though, having recently been on sale, I would gladly grab it again. I was browsing the marketplace a short while ago and noticed it's 400 points now, which is very worthwhile in my opinion.

Thanks a lot for the in-depth guide!
