Carcassonne is coming this Wednesday, read below.

New Press Release
The classic, well-known European board game “Carcassonne” arrives on Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360 this Wednesday, June 27 at 9:00 a.m. GMT (2:00 a.m. Pacific).

Named after the medieval fortified town of Carcassonne in southern France, famed for its city walls, “Carcassonne” for Xbox LIVE Arcade starts with an empty landscape and a single square tile. Using strategic tactics and a little luck, one to five four players take turns selecting from 72 tiles displaying various features of a city including roads, the walls of a castle or fields. The medieval countryside thrives as players and their opponents place tiles and complete towns, roads, and farms while competing to accumulate the most points.

The rules of the game are easy with no elimination and fast gameplay – perfect for just about anyone! Although simple, devoted players will find layers of strategy that will keep them coming back for more. Combining a fresh visual experience and the opportunity to always have a playing partner, “Carcassonne” is the future for board game fanatics.

“Carcassonne” from Sierra Online is the Xbox LIVE Arcade edition of the hit multiplayer tile-based German board game of the same name, designed by Klaus-Jurgen. Shortly after its release in Germany in 2000, the board game won Spiel des Jahres in 2001, the European equivalent of a Game of the Year Award.

“Carcassonne” will be available worldwide for 800 Microsoft Points and is rated E for Everyone.

Carcassonne Hits Live in June

One of the holy trinity of board games, Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne and Alhambra, first announced for the Xbox Live Arcade last summer is set to hit this June.

Carcassonne is designed for two to five players and is set in a medieval landscape made up of 72 tiles. The Live version of the game will feature offline and online multiplayer games.

Sierra Online released a dozen screens from the game over the weekend as well. Looks like it will be worth a purchase.
Looks Werid but very interesting. Is it in any way like Civilization?
Just a little.

Essentially the core game play is like this:

- Each turn you pick up a tile. The tile has either: field, road, city or a cloister (monestary). Basically, like dominos, you have to place the piece so that the edges connect to similar pieces.

- You have 7 little people who you can place on a section of the tile you just placed as long as no other player's person is on a connected part, they are conisdered a theif on the road, a knight in the city, a monk in the cloister, or a farmer on the field. So, if you extend a city, and your opponent has a knight there, you can't place a knight in the same city.

- When, for example, a city is completed you earn points depending on how big it is. Obviously, it's more difficult to build a bigger city because you need more multi-sided city pieces. The same is true for roads, when a road is completed you earn points. After you earn points you get the person back and can place him later on a tile you place.

- Farmers are stuck on the board until the end of the game, but earn a lot of points per city their fields are touching. This is a major part of the strategy, the quick points vs the long-term investiment.

- Also, tile placement can be defensive (aka completing an opponent's city when it's still small, thus less points). Also, you can create a city, placing a person there, and then later connect it to an opponent's city and steal points.

- Finally, there are numerous expansions which add numerous twists to gameplay. Most notably, the River, which allows you to start by building a 12 tile river rather than starting with just one standard tile.
Hmm..sounds interesting.

I'm ASSUMING they will have a training mode :)
Haha, it sounds a lot more complex than it is. It's definately one of those games you can learn to play in one sitting, but takes a long time to master the strategy.

Sounds really cool, thanks for the explained lordwow. I'll play the demo when it comes out, and if I like it. I might buy it.

I still would love to have Chess.

My biggest worry about this release is that the MTV instant gratification generation (you know who you are) won't have the patience to learn all the rules and strategy's and there won't be many people to play with.

there's a great online version of this at

http://games.asobrain.com

It's called Tolhouse on this site, but is the same as carcassonne. You can even play against bots, but be sure to uncheck the expansion options when playing the game (it doesn't seem like XLA will have the expansions, maybe I am wrong, the expansions add a little more complexity but in my opinion more strategy)

It's a great game!

I'm in for this and all the other announced board games. Finally a reason to retire the Uno when I'm feeling like playing a table game. Hopefully enough other people will be interested that it won't be difficult to find a multiplayer game in the long run.

Yeah this was me on the Catan tutorial, I got to the "you need to build a road, trade with other players to get blah blah blah" before I was looking for the Lost Planet disc.

If I'm going to be gratified I expect to be gratified instantly.;)

It's a shame though cos I got the idea the game would takes ages to play but a friend of mind says it's designed so games don't take any longer than 45 mins or something.

Ya I agree, Carcassone is a little more complicated than Dominos. But it's definately an "Easy to learn, difficult to master" type game.

Looks really interesting, but 800 points ($10) for these games are a bit much in my opinion. 400 points would be great, considering they are only worth 200 achievement points and are considerably shorter (with less content) than $60 games...

board games roughly cost about $10 and don't come with the option of no cleanup or online play. $10 is definitely worth it.

"Real" board games cost even more. Good luck getting Catan or Carcassonne for $10.

Ya, I paid about $50 for Carcassonne's Big Box (Carcassone & 5 expanisons). It's worth that much.

But compared to what we get with Oblivion, or Forza 2, or GRAW 2...at $60, $10 for what we get for Catan or this game just doesn't seem balanced.

That's awfully relative. I've owned Catan and Carcassonne for years and have had countless hours of play from them.
Where the fuck is Chess. You know one of the oldest if not oldest board games known to man. Played in more Countries then any other game.
it is comming to live with camera support so be happy.

I'm new to this whole XBLA scene, and $10 for an arcade game...compared to $5 i believe for a PS1 game...seems like we are getting ripped off. I mean, we are paying for XBL ($50 a year), you would think we would get some descent prices.

I loved Catan so I'm definitely looking forward to checking this out on Wednesday!

Is this the sort of game that can be played by multiple people in the same room or is there an element of hiding your pieces from the other players that makes it only suitable for online play?

Nope, there are no hidden pieces, and according to the press release, you can do 4 players on the same console.

im stoked, i just got catan and the only thing i dont lik eis i cant play with anyone on the same console. i will be purchasing this without even trying the demo.

You know I'm willing to bet that a lot more people would be willing to buy this game if it were going for 400pts. But then again, the same could be said for any other 800pt game. I'll try the demo but I doubt I'll get it. I'm saving my points for SF.

I'm still hoping MS will have a special on XBLA games during E3...tired of paying $10 for games that should only cost $5. With that said, i'll be getting this game though, been wanting a good strategy game.

I think this one is worth the $10, especially since the board game goes for like $40.

EDIT: $40 is with the River and other expansions included.
My biggest worry about this release is that the MTV instant gratification generation (you know who you are) won't have the patience to learn all the rules and strategy's and there won't be many people to play with.
It is called XBL Acrade, games should be pick up and play. But having said that, this looks more intresting than Catan was. I played the demo and it put me to sleep because the presentation was so drab.

Personally I am really pumped for this.. Ever since I quit WoW I've been organizing board game nights with friends every 3 weeks or so.. being able to play board games at any time, against AI or online makes for a easy 800 point purchase.

I just bought my 360 about 3 weeks ago, and Catan is easily the game I am playing most.

Nice. I'll be getting this!

But where is Monopoly?

Think of all the editions:
Halo
Perfect Dark
Kameo
PGR

And M$ could charge $20 for the basic version and $10 extra for each special edition! (sigh)

Um, 800 points for Monopoly, thats it. They could release 'themes' later on which im sure they would charge like 100 or 200 points for but Monopoly would be nice.

I have been addicted to Catan since it was released. I'm kind of on the fence about getting this too. Is it wrong that I'm enjoying the XBLA releases more than any of the actual releases?

I love XBLA games. I've got so many, it's ridiculous. Carcasonne is a definite day-one purchase for me. People complaining about the $10 are being silly. When the real game costs $25 or more and this version is actually better, I'm happy.

I'm shakin in my boots to play this game! Cam support yippie!

I love the monopoly idea. I used to own the xbox1 version and played it all the time. It came with 4 different boards. Perfect game to play with the woman. Chess would be bomb too. It could have traditional, battle chess, sex chess, cheese chess....

I have no problem paying 800 points for these boardgames. The replayability is so high! I was super stoked for worms, but I fizzled out on that eventually after many good games. SHEEP for WOOD you Orewhore.
