XBLA - Costume Quest - Expansion "Grubbins on Ice" out NOW! (Only 400 MSP!)

Where are the media reviews? GameRankings only shows a 6/10 from Game Informer. That doesn't sound as great as I hoped, but it's only one review.

Use the knight's shield to get past water and other overhead hazards. The last costume piece should be in the sewer since the other leads to the other two pieces.
Yeah, I figured that out two posts above yours. It was annoying me so much, I went back and messed around until I finally figured it out. I must have wasted 20-30 minutes at least, wandering around trying to figure out where to go next.

not going to purchase this for 1200 ms points, it'll end up like zombie wranglers just collecting hd space so i'll wait for a price drop. kinda cool though on the theme and how they released it in perfect time.

Game Informer isn't a fan. They gave it a 6.0.

http://gameinformer.com/games/costu...t-review-too-much-trick-not-enough-treat.aspx

I agree the saving system is sucky, but I enjoy the turn-based battles. Granted, I'm a HUGE fan of turn-based games, so take that with a grain of salt.

Also, the reviewer finished the game in 5 hours. While doubtlessly he was rushing so he could finish and do the review, I'm hoping the game takes me longer, what with all the quests that need to be done and stamps that need to be collected.

Alright, so tried the trial and the game clicked with me so I decided to bite. Having a LOT of fun so far. Does anybody know if there are more prizes from the apple bobbing game? I finished the 3 stages but didn't get the achievement. I'm guessing there must be more stages later on in the game or something.

Utopian, ha, yeah I got stuck on that part as well. Thankfully a little tip popped up as I tried to enter it and I figured it out. Took me a little while to find that last house though. Just passing the gate now.

Going to go do some MANUAL LABOR (gasp!), and then come back and play later.

As for the apple-bobbling, I can only assume there are other opportunities to play the game, as I also completed all the challenges.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to get stuck at the sewer. ;)
Completely finished the game about an hour ago. Took bout 6 hours total, very fun game.
Yeah, I think I'm in the second half of the game. I'm thinking 5-6 hours total playtime for me. I intend to finish it tonight, I guess.

The xbox.com website is a complete mess, so maybe that's related to the XBL issue? Also the website now *requires* a mouse-over to be able to select how to sort the list of games, making impossible to change the sort order when viewed on an iPhone. Boo. But even on my computer I didn't have much luck with the website. I finally found the game, only to get a "service unavailable" message when I tried to queue it up for download.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the demo and am not too concerned by the 5 to 6 hour length. It takes me a long time to finish games due to lack of time to play, so games that are too long I tend to never finish anyway.

Just about to finish up in the mall area I think, but I'm noticing two chests on the left side of the mall to the left of the mall-o-train or whatever it's called. Anybody know how to get those two?

If you're talking about the one inside the big pumpkin,
you knock out a railing on the third floor to fall down inside the pumpkin.

The other one you get to when you walk the
train path, from the arcade. Instead of going up towards where the boss was, head down to a little alcove where the chest is.

I might be fuzzy on details, but this is how I'm remembering... Could be wrong on that second chest.

Tried the demo, bought the game and am loving it. I completed the first section and had a lot of fun with it. Very happy to
put the pumpkin avatar item on display
Great game! Now I'm a little worried I'll blow through it too, though. Guess maybe I'm not going to want it to end in 5 to 6. Still, very happy with the purchase. Now I need to figure out what else I want to buy to get me to 2400 points spent this month.

Just finished it! Got all the achievements and all the avatar awards (which I promptly displayed). Was sad to see it end, but I think the length was just about right otherwise it might have started to drag a bit.

I did my best to switch out my costumes every now just to keep the combat from getting TOO stale. The
Vampire's life steal ability is fricking wicked awesome. Saved me from dying twice during the final battles.

Didn't swap out the battle stamps too much though. I never once equipped a "B" ability but rather used the slime (that damages all enemies) and the increased attack power/crits and their upgrades the entire game. I wanted to do as much damage as possbile. By the end I was hitting for about 140-160.

Overall, I had a blast playing this today! The famous Double Fine humor/charm was present and the art style was adorable. Wish it had a bit more depth but it doesn't ruin the game.

This is one to play with the kids (if you have them)! I hope they make CQ2 and release it around Halloween next year!

That was the one I needed, thanks!
I had completely forgotten about that little section behind the arcade, and the train skips right past it!

anyone know where the 3rd costume contest judge is in the mall? i can only seem to find 2
There should be two to the left of the stage near the pumpkin with the chest in it and one on the right near the arcade, next to a fries stand.

haha, didn't see the other one on the left, thanks.

now i just need to find 2 more unicorn costume pieces, i've been rolling around the mall for like an hour now and cant find these last 2 pieces :\

the demo was cute, part of me wished it had voice over acting like the Peanuts Gang or something...though I suppose the way it is has it's own charm. Hopefully it will be the deal of the week sometime soon.

Played straight through this today, I couldn't put it down. It's not super challenging, but it's darn fun. I actually stuck with the robot for a great deal of the game despite it being the first costume you have. Missile Barrage is just awesome. Can't display my avatar awards though, dashboard beta doesn't want me to :[ Loved the Narnia reference at the end :D

i played the demo and im gonna buy it. seems kind of expensive but its to cute to pass up and it'll help me get the 800 points for the october promotion. im not a really slow reader but some of the long text fly's by and 1 sentence just sits there with a press "A" prompt i found that a little weird. after work tonight im jumping in deep.
Just quit playing after an hour or so. I really enjoyed my romp through the neighborhood, whacking mailboxes for candy and interacting with all the great NPCs. I'm actually stuck now, if you can believe it.

I've found 4 of the 6 kids playing hide-and-go-seek. Mrs. Pumpin Pie lady wants an ingredient I think comes from a tree I can't get to without making a new patriotic costume. I have 2 of the parts for it. I can't get through the water tunnel with the robot or knight costume. I've hit every house I can find. I must be missing something.
I am similarly stuck.

I've found 4 of 6 kids. I did manage to get into the sewer as I figured out the shield thing. Looking at my quest list, I have one ?????????? that is then followed by 2 quests I've started. I assume this missing quest will get me back on track, but I can not find it. I've gone up to and talked to every person I can find and I can not find this quest. So, I can't get the patriotic costume, which will get me in the yard with the fruit, which will get me into the rest of the town. I've literally spent 90 minutes running around and can't find it. It is really annoying me.

Heh, I liked The Lord of the Rings reference when
Lucy joins your party
.

I also can't display my avatar award, although you better believe I would be wearing that mask if I could.
About how long was the game total?
I just finished the game myself. I would say, depending on the speed of your play, you could finish the game in 5-7 hours. I took my absolute time, meandering around, battling every single monster in the game.

A highly recommended experience, even at its shortish length. 1200 points was worth the admission price.

Also got all 200 achievements after Googling how to find the last Unicorn costume piece I missed.

Hah, was it the
chest at the top of a random escalator that went nowhere? Took me forever to find that one!

Yep, that was the one I missed! I find the convoluted ones inside that pumpkin and behind the train tracks, but don't think to go up that escalator!

what'd you have to google to find it, I'm missing 2 unicorn pieces and have been searching every corner of the mall w/ no success. I've tried googling it but can't seem to find any help

Man, it's already a day later and I want to play more CQ! Maybe they'll release a small $2 DLC pack with some more costumes/stamps/enemies/etc. A new area to explore would be cool too, but I'm not sure how they would fit that into the story.

My guess is you're missing two specific pieces.

One you find by
going up the escalator in the second level, the one that's by itself leads to a chest at the top.

The other chest is alongside the train tracks on the second floor. You get to it by going through the hole at the back of the arcade, then following the train tracks around to the right.

They'd just plainly tell you "Hey, since you totally UNLOCKED the full game...we found another street for you to Trick or Treat on!" "Hurray! MOAR CANDIES!" Then you'd just go on the side quest and do that.

awesome I found them, thanks utopianmachine! (don't know how I kept missing that escalator)

Now my only problem is the game is saying I only have 14/15 achievements, but when I go to the achievements it says I have all 15. maybe just slow on updating or something?

I really like that it doesn't have voice acting. Usually voice acting is terrible except on (and only some of) the bigger budget games. Bad voice acting would have killed this game. Besides that, there's a charm to it this way.

Having said that the, the text is way too small. This is another game that I can't play from the couch because it's completely unreadable from any kind of distance. Also, my kids aren't going to be able to keep up with the text that progresses on it's own which is already a tad too fast for me at times, plus it's in a font they are going to have a hard time reading. For a game that's suppose to be good for kids and adults, you'd think they would have considered that.

But that's not stopping me from loving this game. My kids be damned. ;^)

How much replay value do you see this gaming having? I'm hoping one of my local friend's buys it and I'll just play it there one night and beat it.

If they had a dynamic Halloween town where there's like "daily quest" (find 30 candy corns etc), and the game's engine dynamically changes the layout of the street every time you boot it up would be pretty sweet or some repeatable short but sweet multiplayer mini game.

There seems to be a bug for those of us who bought the game only after trying the demo - it says you got credit for the achievement, but it doesn't actually give it to you. Or at least I suspect that's the issue here. I'm sure it will get addressed in an update.

While I am a fast reader normally, some of the text was so clever, it took me a slower read or a re-read to get the joke, and there wasn't always time for that.

I would think the game would have little replay value. When you finish the game and go to continue it, you're just replaying the final boss battle. You can explore the whole world, but there are no more enemies after you beat them all. If you beat almost all the enemies, you'll have enough candy to buy all the stamps. You max out at level 10.

Me, I'll probably mess around with a second playthrough as the male character, as I played the female one first. I'd just like to see if the dialogue changes much, as the girl seemed really spunky compared to the boy.

I bought the game when it prompted me for that achievement, and I got it. But I've seen other people complaining about them not all registering on the Xbox forum too.

yeah, there's not much replay value here. the game is great for what it is, but I can't help feel like there could've been so much more to it. I'd recommend it fully at an 800MSP or 560MSP price (if/when it goes on sale). As is, there's just not enough content/replayability to recommend paying the premium $15 for this game. They should've put something in like an online arena mode or something, though I don't know how that'd work with the turn based combat system they use in the game.

Any idea if I start a new game and playthrough 'til that first achievement again would it unlock? I may try it anyways.

I played the demo yesterday, its good but the lack of voices/music bothers me.. theres alot of times with just awkward silences which I find odd.

Did a blind buy on this because I didn't want to deal with the demo achievement glitch, because it's Double Fine, because I need exactly 1200 points for the 800 point rebate promo, and because based on all of the comments here I know I will love the game. Looking forward to playing through it this week to get in the Halloween spirit!

I finished it today. I would say that it is definitely worth a buy for 800, but not quite 1200. The rebate incentive might be the tipping point to invest at 1200 though. Price aside, I loved the game. The combat was a tedious at times, but still engaging enough that I never stopped because of it.

Yep, that's why I spent the 1200. I only have to spend 800 now to be eligible for the rebate.

The combat did get repetitive, but I switched out the costumes frequently enough on Reynold and Lucy that it didn't get TOO repetitive (I ALWAYS had Everett in the Statue of Liberty costume. It's heal saved my ass so many times.).

Personally, ever sense I first heard about the game, I knew I would buy it day one even at 1200 points. The rebate this month just put the icing on the cake.

Just bought points to get this game, I enjoyed the demo.

The game is so full of charm, looks like I'm in or near the last part of the game based on the quest list.

Just beat the game in two sittings (doctors ordered bed rest FTW?) and really enjoyed it. This game is charming and funny. In my opinion this game has no replayability and really borders on being worth 1200 points. I say during the promo, do it. Afterwards I'd wait for an 800 point sale.

Or get some points on the cheap and dog on.
You get all the pumpkin pieces from the scarecrow - make sure you talk to him before you enter the maze (if you are that far yet)
I loved that costume. Looked so badass.
Unfortunately, it's charged ability seemed a little pointless. Usually after two turns, I can one shot a guy with the robot or spaceman charged ability. Why bother with reducing their already small amount of health left by half? It was pretty useful during those final boss battles though.
