The lantern-jawed king of stunts Joe Danger arrives on Xbox LIVE Arcade with Joe Danger Special Edition, an Xbox 360-exclusive version of the award-winning game from British independent publisher Hello Games. In a lighthearted combination of the challenge of Trials HD and the goofy platform tricks of Doritos Crash Course, you control the eponymous stunt bike rider as he rides on courses containing loop-the-loops, insane ramps, spring-loaded jump boosters, decapitation bars, speed bumps, and much, much more.

Tons of Levels

There are over 100 levels or events in Career mode available in the game for you to sequentially unlock. Each level has special tasks to accomplish, outlined at the start of the event, which earn you a Gold Star. These tasks might be to pick up all the stars in the level, hit every target, or even spell out D-A-N-G-E-R by collecting letters in the air (doing this will also get you avatar awards). Certain events can only be entered if you have enough of these Gold Stars, so take the time to go for them.

You’ll start off with straight platform runs, but eventually you’ll run into races against A.I. riders. (Note: if a race ends a career segment, you must WIN the race, not just finish in order to unlock the next track. That had me blocked for a while.) Then, you’ll encounter Puzzle levels where you have to use the track editor to rearrange the obstacles in order for you to proceed, or even Bowling, where Joe flies through the air to knock down pins.

Even if you’ve raced through every track in Career mode, there’s a second set of levels in the Laboratory. The Laboratory is EXCLUSIVE to Xbox LIVE Arcade and contains another 50 levels grouped into five paths. Completing each of these groups grants you an achievement on completion. They can be quite tricky but they’re a great way to practice your skills in order to get those elusive Gold Stars.

Be Patient; Explore Your Options

At first, getting these stars may seem difficult but it’s amazing how much better you’ll get as you play more. Take your time to explore the level and find those hidden stars. If you get stuck on a level, go back to replay an earlier level and go for a Gold Star or try out the Lab. Practice makes perfect here.

Controls

It’s not just a racing game. You have to master the control scheme in order to rack up points and achieve those in-level stars via stunts. The bumper buttons on your controller cause Joe Danger to perform wildly irresponsible stunts on his bike such as a cowboy maneuver. Combining these moves in one flawless run and doing all the other stunts (wheelie, endo, back flip, front flip, etc.) will give you points and stars, while mastering the jump and double jump (X) will let you glide over the fiendish mousetraps and speed bumps.

Play in the Sandbox

Need more levels? Joe Danger SE comes with a built-in track editor that’s pretty easy to use. You can create your own stunt tracks, and even share them with people on your Friends List. Choose a save slot for your track, then choose to Edit Level. Once you’re on this screen, press the Y button to enter the actual track editor. (That step had me stumped at first until it was pointed out to me that it’s mentioned on the Top Tip screen when you go into the level – pay attention to those tips!) Press X to open up your Toolbox of fifty available stunt items. Highlight the chosen item and place it with the A button on the track, then the Y button to close the editor and see the finished product. Go crazy! Once you get the hang of the editor, you can place collectible stars or coins, and all other kinds of crazy things on the track. Create wild tracks and challenge your friends to complete them!

Huge Amounts of Fun and Challenge

This is a big game with tons of levels, tons of things to do within those levels, and even a way to make more levels. There’s even a two-player split-screen local multiplayer mode, so you and a friend can battle it out on the couch. It’s fun, and while levels can be completed fairly quickly, they also present significant challenge for the player trying to achieve perfection and get all those Golden Stars.
Looks great fun, but will probably wait for a sale.
Me too. I have a really hard time spending $15 on an XBLA game.

Understandable, but keep in mind that it probably won't be on sale during the holiday sale and this is one of the titles that I would say is worth a full purchase price.

I totally get waiting a while though.
I had no idea this was coming to XBLA. I got the PSN version well over a year ago and it is excellent.
They announced it a month before launch, so there wasn't much time to really build up hype since MS doesn't seem to have a PS Blog-style platform for third-parties to reach out to their audience.

Does adspace all over the dashboard count?

I grabbed the demo, but probably won't be buying any time soon. I'm still holding out hope that Trials Evolution will be out before Xmas. That game will get all my time.

Yeah, I'd bet more people see the ads on the dashboard then they would on an Xbox blog. :)

Just read this over on TA, but there will be a free Santa Character available for free on December 21st. No word on achievements, and it's only available for a limited time. Unsure of if that means Santa is limited, or the ability to buy for free is limited.

According to Joystiq, the DLC will run from 12/21-12/25.

Here's a video of the Santa DLC, which not only has Santa but a quadbike that handles differently than the normal bike. Sean Murray of Hello Games describes it as being like Luigi in a Mario game in terms of offering a different style of control that offers a new way to play or replay the events in the career mode.

It disappears after Christmas, so you better get it right away if you're interested. I actually have a couple of early codes that we're giving away on our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/#!/SmashPad/status/147802782664105984), so feel free to try for an early code since I'm not sure how many people we'll get to enter the contest.

No.
I'll grab the DLC while it's available, but will probably wait for a sale on the game.
I'll do the same. 1200 points is hard to swallow, but then, I haven't tried the demo yet. I just may want the game more if I try it. :D

I can definitely say that they've made the game much easier to get through and that's not to say that it's an easy game now, but those races that were incredibly hard now aren't nearly as much of a bottleneck now. I'm on the eighth set (out of eleven) of events, so I'm not too far from the end now despite having only completed 33% of the career mode at the moment.
