More and more it's looking like this is going to happen, and no sir I am not happy. There's still so much that can be done with the XBox, which has only REALLY started hitting a strong stride since February and should last at least until this time next year. You KNOW some fairly solid stuff would still be hitting for many months after that if they weren't so intent on rushing XBN out the door.

Ever since they hired that idiot from Sega to do their marketing (Moore), I knew some boneheaded decision like this was coming. Being first to market without having a stranglehold on "first place" in the console race is going to be a big mistake....as we've seen before through the 128 and 32 bit systems. Cough. Sega.
 
Sony is laughing all the way to the bank. Does the evil empire really think its going to take down Sony? Hah, thats a good one (in my Arnold Scwarzennegger voice)
 
Personally I don't think that Sony is going to win the next round.
a) precedent- no console has been on top for more than 2 generations, and yes I realize the industry is still very young.
b) Microsoft is doing everything Sony should have. Buying developers and getting them to release exclusively on their console. Releasing first party games that are actually good. Getting an established online framework. Releasing a console that actually took into account what people wanted, i.e. no memory cards, 4 controller ports, integrated ethernet adapter.
c) Sony is too complacent. They feel that they are the one to beat, and they are. But not wanting to come out until 2007? That takes chutzpah.

Of course Nintendo is probably screwed no mattter what. Hell, I'll buy it, but I doubt they will live past this next round, unless things start to change.

Are they ever going to have a stranglehold on first place in this round? Probably not, so why prolong things? If it'll be ready and the best it can be by then, I don't see why they should wait.
 
There are two half pc half consoles. The Phantom by Infinium and another that I forget the name of. Supposedly the xbox 2 is going to be more console-like. Rumor has it that there is no hard drive. Ign has an article about it, you should check it out.
 
If they do lanch in December of 05, and the rumors of having 3 3.5 Ghz processors is true, Microsoft is going to loose even more money in the next generation then they did this generation.
 
I love my XBOX but I don't see this next MS console doing well at all. From what info has been released it looks like it will completely alienate current XBOX owners, no backwards compatibility, no hard drive. Who exactly are they trying to sell it to, because they certainly are looking to keep their current fan base IMO of course.
 
Im sick of hearing backwards compatibility crap...so what? KEEP YOUR DAMN XBOX!...you didnt bitch when SNES didnt play NES games...why now?...and they are supposed to have a memory card that holds ALOT...like a memory card...

Article brings up some pretty juicy possibilities -- as far as the next Nintendo and Sony console are concerned. I'm not going to be terribly pyched if you have to buy a card to save games on the next box. Bleh. Plus that will probably mean longer load times.
 
Believe it or not backwards capatability *IS* a big deal. I don't think that I am the only one sick of so much stuff being jacked into my TV. The VCR, DVD, PS2, Cube, XBox, N64, Dreamcast, cable decoder, audio decoder, etc. Back in the day of the NES and SNES the only things jacked into your TV were a cable box and VCR if you had $300-$400. Now, you want me to continue to keep my XBox jacked into the TV along with the next one? Don't get me wrong I love my XBox, but I don't love its size. Not to mention you can't stack anything on top of it since the vents reside there.

The other thing with backwards compatability is that I know my gaming library is going to be supported and thus continue to keep its value.

As for the no hard drive thing, we'll see how much of a step backward it really is, since the speed of the DVD readers in the next gen will be much faster. Afterall, the hard was really just used as a cache for the DVD. It still doesn't seem like much of a deal since that means I'll have to buy a seperate memory card.
 
december 05 seems really soon, but its like a year and a half away. They've still got plenty of time to release stuff for xbox.

My GCN sits nicely on top of my Xbox. That said, hooking up yet another system is going to be pushing it. I've got 3 already plus VCR, DVD and soon, DVR. I'm got plenty of inputs but i'm out of power plugs!
 
Playstation is held up by a few things,

1. Fanboys of Sony and Playstation and PS2 hype.
2. Developers who think exclusive-ness to PS2 is a good thing.
3. People who have never seen an Xbox or just hate Microsoft cuz of Windows.

yeah the list goes on but those are some main points.

Something that really gets me p.o. is when MS announced the DVR,Media Center etc. for X2. One week later, Sony PSX, DVR, DVD Burner, basically everything that MS is considering for X2 but with a ps2 instead of X2.
And that "X" at the end doesn't stand for "ms ideas we stole from their Xbox2 and are now using"?

it could be a good thing releasing early. as long as it's better than competition. the design for the xbox allows them to put the processer, graphics card and all the spec in pretty late, ps2/gc it's pretty early on. so an early release by a year could be good.
PS2-147mhz to 197mhz(different sources have different specs but a 187mhz is a more common one) one year before Xbox/GC
GC-450mhz(that an approx. 430-460 is the range it might be) a week or two apart for Xbox
Xbox-733mhz.

yes processor is only one point but xbox is spec wise the best than GC and last and least PS2.

anyone has the full comparision sheet or knows where it is, post it.
It's pretty fun to look at. a ton of the benchmarks for GC are unknown and the PS2 looks awful.
 
I hope it doesn't release till the Christmass of 2006. But then again, I know PS3 would also release then, therefore, I wouldn't be able to get both of them!!!

Face Facts:

PS1 dominated the last generation. PS2 shattered all known records that PS1 set and it is DOMINATING the current market. What makes you believe that suddenly everyone's going to flock to MS? Because YOU and your buddies hate SONY? LMAO, Sony will continue to dominate and the only battle worth watching will be the power struggle between Sony and N over the handheld market.

BTW I'd say odds are 500 to 1 that we'll be seeing PS3 or Xbox next before 2006. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the PS3 doesn't show up on USA soil till 2007.

I guess users never, ever shift from system to system between generations. Apparently that would be news to Atari and Nintendo.

Is it likely that Sony will fall from market leadership? Probably not.
Is it possible? Yes.
