Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but if you already have a 360 hard drive (say a 20GB), I thought it was relatively easy to buy a 120GB notebook drive and upgrade it. I've seen compatible notebook drives selling for $40-50 without really researching it too much. I think the official 120GB hard drive would need to drop to around $60 before it really became a decent deal.
Even if you didn't have a hard drive, don't they have a program coming out that will allow you to snag a 20GB for $20? That would still make it considerably cheaper to just upgrade your drive yourself... basically like getting a free game with the hard drive when you factor in the savings
I was planning to look into this more once the dashboard update came out. If the functionality to copy games to the hard drive is as nice as it sounds, I think a lot of people are going to be looking to upgrade their drives. This would make the information on how to do so even more readily available.
I have changed out harddrives for multiple XBOX 360's. I don't know why some people are spreading misinformation, but if you Google for the information you desire, then you can find it easily. The only real information posted was the following: the 360 will only recognize a 120 GB of any drive you use, and you need some specific files to get it running on the 360.
You need a certain brand / model of 120 GB drive. Most recently, I changed out my youngest nephew's harddrive. It cost me about $55 to buy the drive brand new. I switched out his 20 GB for the 120 GB. The whole process took me about a hour, and I was really taking my time.
I have played on LIVE for MONTHS with my nephews and friends (over a year?) from work that play on LIVE. My friends and myself have never had a single problem. My other older nephew, living in the same house, had his drive changed as well. They play each other without any problem.
If you wanted to build a 360 HDD from scratch, then you need another $20 to $25 on top of the $50 to $70 for the harddrive.
