Niether format wins because consumers lose. Im hesitant to buy the hd dvd player for 360 because I don't want it dead in the water 10 months from now. So I think about buying a PS3 JUST FOR blu ray but I don't want my $600 Blu Ray purchase to end up dead in the water later. So, like most people, I buy niether one (unless I find a sweet used hd dvd player deal) because in the end I can buy a bobo ass format player and watch the one I don't have succeed, or I can buy both and watch one fail. Either way I lose.
no matter what sony says, HD-DVD is not the next betamax.

why? because universal will not put out movies on BR. theyve said this emphatically.

also beta died because sony was too controlling and it only lasted an hour. had to have 2 for just 1 movie.

and back in the days of beta & vhs people used them to record TV. people use DVRs for that now.

HD-DVD isnt going anywhere. if BR "wins" ill eat my shoe and put a vid of it up on youtube.
Wow that's the silliest thing I've ever read. I'm enjoying Kingdom of Heaven, Corpse Bride (also in HD-DVD), Ice Age 2, The Departed, The Prestige etc. They all look OUTSTANDING, and are all now MPEG4 or VC-1 (e.g. The Departed). And Casino Royale next month will likely look phenomenal. So please, don't turn this into a silly fight over what's better. Unless you hold stocks in HD-DVD, save the trolling for elsewhere. I have both the PS3 and an HD-A2 HD-DVD player, and both are great formats.
well yea. but i was trying to tit for tat w/ the same level of stupidity of the post i replied to. :p

for those interested in how the format war is going to end up, it's mostly likely both formats will remain.

See dual-format players are already in production, and they won't cost anymore than a blu-ray player already does. So once this technology actually takes off blu-ray and HD-dvd will be as different as DVD+ and DVD-, and the only people that will get screwed are the early adopters.

I was considering getting the HD DVD player for the 360 because when I play normal DVDs in the 360 I've noticed some motion blur. I don't know if I have the settings wrong or what. I have component connection, 360 display set to 720p, and the autosource detection resolution on the tv switches to 480p when I play a DVD in it. I figured 480p would be better than my old dvd player that goes 480i, but like I said there's a noticeable motion blur occurring. Anyone know what might be the issue? Has anyone noticed this with the attachment? I'm not too interested in going with a VGA connection, so it's probably going to come down to buying a decent upscale/progressive scan dvd player or the hd dvd attachment.

Also I like the idea of not having to take my game out of the 360 to play a movie by using the attachment (as opposed to the PS3) and not having to take up another input slot on my tv (as opposed to a standalone player). So the accessory has it's selling points despite the HD DVD format risks.

In all fairness though, the bluray releases this past week crushed the hd dvd release.

by numbers. but the quality of the movies on BR have sucked compared to HD-DVD so far. the only decent BR movie ive seen out recently is "The Departed". and its also available on HD-DVD.

just look at the list of flicks for each. is it just me or does HD-DVD seem to have more quality movies?

It varies by person. I like the HD-DVD lineup so far; but it seems that most of the good HD-DVDs are being released in other countries, but not here. I know that HD-DVDs are region free, but importing is expensive.
I will not lower myself to the ranks of hd-dvd owners. I just want people to know that buying the hd-dvd addon is a grave mistake and you're throwing away good money on merchandise that is going to end up in a clearance center not too long from now. I dont want people to get screwed. Thanks.
You're a deluded idiot who doesn't know a goddamn thing. Go troll somewhere else, lest you get your copy of "Little Man" shoved up your ass. Thanks.

Sorry, I had just read a few JimmieMac posts.

Anyway -

This is something that will NOT be resolved anytime soon. The PS3 is a nice vehicle for its format and has more studio support, but we will be seeing very affordable HD-DVD players by year's end which should drive sales quite a bit, and HD-DVD still has the head start and offers features Blu-Ray can't yet match. No major studio is going to budge - it's feasible that a smaller one like Weinstein or Lionsgate could, but the big guys are not going to.

Very few "player-selling" franchises are platform exclusive, not to mention the fact that one or two heavy-hitter movies are not enough to get people on a worldwide/mass-market level to plunk down the $500 required to view them. The 360 player is by far the best way to get into HD movies without blowing your wallet into oblivion.

In other words, jrhawk is right. He just made it a lot quicker to read than I did.

I can't wait until we get some affordable dual format players a few years down the road. This fanboy/shilling crap will be but a distant memory.

The 360 player is by far the least financially risky way to get into buying high definition movies.
