No, he's always been like this. He took it as an immense personal affront when the Xbox was announced, like Microsoft had kidnapped his children and wrote the press release in their entrails. Some of the stuff he said then was just loony.
It always struck me as funny, considering Sony had themselves only in the last generation firmly established themselves as a game console platform player, that mere mortals would dare tread in his Heavenly appointed territory. When in fact much of Sony's success came from the competition repeatedly bashing themselves on the head with rocks instead of throwing at Sony. Sony had some unique advantages but their effectiveness could have been blunt by better organized competitors. And that is why Microsoft bothers Kutaragi so much. They can afford to learn from their mistakes where Sega and Nintendo could not. Some people cannot avoid displaying their emotions and seek to cover their fear by expressing it as anger or outrage.
In the late 90's Sony was telling everyone how they were going to be the next big thing in personal computers with top to bottom Sony components and a Sony OS. Almost a decade after they started that push they still ship millions of Windows licenses every year and in many case it is the most profitable part of the unit. Just not for Sony. That drives them insane. Sony does insane very well. Only recently has it begun to set in that consumers really don't like Sony having a proprietary piece of equipment for everything ala Memory Stick and ATRAC, and that this was costing them more than the sales of Memory Sticks was bringing in. They've started to open up a bit still have hobbled the PSP with an overpriced flash memory standard. If they had it to do over at this point they probably include an SD slot as well or instead.
