OK just a quick question. Well my xbox has been giving me some dirty disc errors( says that the game is not a game or dirty). Also had 2 copies of Unreal Champ 2 that did not work but then again it could of been the game as it does play halo 2 and the new map disc ok. Ok so I was wondering if this is a sign that it is dieing ? kinda like the DRE for PS2? Is it a good idea to trade it on the next Eb trade offer (100 for xbox and 3 games)? And will GS or eb take it with a third party controller as the first party one is broken (right trigger) unless they will take that. Anyways hope this is the right place if not sorry. Thanks for any help.
 
Well, I think that the lens just might be dirty....I'm not sure how you could clean it though. But they probably would take that broken controller, because every time I've traded a system in, they've never checked the buttons.
 
how old is your xbox? I am not sure but it could be due to a Thomson Drive. Again, not sure, just a guess. Try cleaning your lens.
 
Wish i had a hasting near here. Well I did use a cd cleaner (not recommed by Microsoft ) but it doesn't help all to much. O yeah and all the games are clean and mint , the two copies of Unreal champ 2 were New. Will try the cd cleaner again hope it helps.

edit- It about 3 years old from factory and its a thompson drive.
 
I think I might just trade it in as it would cost about extra 50$ + 3 games when the next trade in deal but that is only if it giving me alot of trouble. Thanks so the lens is dirty or dieing, just wanted to double check. BUt then again 25$. Wait I have the ones that have that power supply problem so should that come in to play as I heard it could fry the xbox (I have the safety cord which they say do nothing but keep it from burning).

Just read that the thompson has a hard time with new games but yet it read the halo 2 map disc ok ? and not UNreal champ 2.
 
I have a similar issue, but I have the newest drive in the system which I purchased last November. This are just going reallllllllly slow or not loading at all. How do I go about cleaning the lens? Do you think that could be the problem?
 
Yes...I think the lens is almost always the problem. A ton of people I know who had their lens cleaned could run everything more smoothly afterwards. Wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
 
I had it happen with UC2, having never had it happen before. Just went and exchanged the disc and it works fine now.
 
My brother joined GameCrazy and got 3 free system cleanings/year. I think they just clean the lens, but it fixed his xbox.
 
Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a replacement Thomson. My Xbox had the same signs as you, and I bought a brand new Thomson, and it had the same problem. Don't risk your money. Trade it in or have Microsoft fix it, or if you want to gamble a little, buy a good drive (Philips, Samsung, Hitachi) on eBay.
 
Just tried the cd/dvd cleaning and its did nothing. Also I started playing jsrf some more and its saying it was a dvd , dirty disc , or just freeze for no reason. it will also stop the music sometimes. With the xbox trade thing for ebgames, (75 + 30 + 3 games ) I might be doing that.
 
My parents got my xbox at lanuch and its still doing fine. I think the xbox is more dependable than the ps2. I think its your drive that is the probelm just like the other poster said.
