Xbox Game Room

The retro child inside of me is currently throwing a party.

...though I wish he would quit thinking my kidney is a pinata.

This could be good. I like the idea of spending 40 points for one play. I could see myself going through a lot of points, but that does bring back the old pay to play feel. Now I just have to make my living room more smokey and filthy......ah, that true arcade feel.

It looks like Sony's Home, only without the creepy.

Personally don't see the appeal of it. Seems to bank pretty heavily on Nostalgia. And there's probably cheaper (if not legally free) alternatives to playing most of those games.

So what's going to happen to coin-op titles such as Joust and the like that are already on XBLA? Depending on how much this thing costs I can't see people continuing to spend 400msp on them in the future.

this is my question. If I have a bunch of old arcade titles already purchased through XBLA, will I get to add those for free? If not, then pass.

I hope they let you transfer some of the XBLA games you already have into the "arcade". I really doubt anyone will spend the points it would cost to buy all 30 games. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be an add on like Halo reach and maybe even offer the first game free like they did with MS Pacman when they first launched XBLA on the first xbox.

I'm sure whatever pricing scheme they come up with will kill any of the fun I'd get out of this. This is sort of interesting though. Probably won't buy much, but like Dox said, it would be nice if they integrated some of the existing XBLA arcade ports that I may already own into this. I can't see them not doing this - it's hard enough to get someone to actually buy Robotron or Joust once, no one is going to buy it twice.

Maybe it's because I'm an old fart, but if I'm going to spend 50 cents to play Ms. Pac-Man once I want to be standing at an actual cabinet. Dagnabbit.
Players have three options: 400 ($5) grants a dual-platform license (playable on Xbox 360 and PC), 240 ($3) gets you the virtual arcade cabinet on one platform (Xbox 360 or PC), and, for the old-fashioned types, 40 ($0.50) is exactly "two quarters" worth of playtime.
Hmm so you need to pay for more if you want to be able to use on two different platform.

Also the game room itself will be free.

Neat idea, though I suspect they are going to charge you to "trick out your game room". That might kill it for me. I like the pricing scheme for the games, though. On the other hand... Centipede without a trackball nor even a mouse? I suppose that's what Windows Live is for, though.

Personally, I feel that asking Gold subscribers to pay a premium on top of a premium is just begging XBL haters to fan the flames. I love Live and spend most of my online gaming time with it (PSN just doesn't have the same sense of community to me, but I acknowledge that it is a solid platform), but this is just wrong and only confirms what many haters claim.

Not to mention, it's not a good deal ;)

Shrug. I'll stick with the 360 only purchases, then. If I want retro arcade games on the PC...well, obviously there are better options with better interfaces.

I'm pleasantly surprised though, I figured everything would be 5 bucks with no exceptions. I thought I saw on the video currently on the dashboard that there would be achievements, so that's a plus.

Yea, I'll bite on some of my old school favorites if they add some achievements. The pricing isn't too bad, but I don't like the 2 tiered pricing for playing on both 360 and PC.

This seems like it could be cool, it looks like the bottom floor is the pay to play arcade, while the floors above it are your friends game room with their machines + decorations. I wonder if you can walk into your friends game rooms who don't have game room open (or are online).

The 40 points per play is a good idea, but if you play six times you might as well have bought the game. So, it seems like 10/20 points would be better.

I assume all the games are going to be

I tell you what would be cool. If somebody came into your arcade and put down 40 points to play a game that is no longer on live like double dragon. Then bam, 40 points for you in your account. Just a thought and it probably wouldn't happen. but cool none the less.

More inviting than Home at least, but I'm not a retro-phile. Who wants to bet there will be games free at GameTap (legally) that will have a pricetag in the Game Room?

Now I really hope they come out with a good paddle controller. Hoping for Circus Atari. Though I have a feeling I'll play it twice and move on.
Does anyone know what enhancements will be made to these games other than upping the resolution?

From what I've heard so far, the games themselves won't be changed all that much. you'll have the standard accoutrements that go with XBL games (online leaderboards, presumably some aspect of multi-player, maybe specific achievements), but it's also been hinted that there'll be achievements based on all the games you've played, and you'll be able to earn medals on each game to work toward achievements.

Kotaku posted a ~6 min hands on with the Game Room (http://kotaku.com/5443015/hands+on-with-xbox-360s-arcade+crazy-game-room). Few things of note.

First, it doesn't look like you'll actually be able to take your avatar and walk around the arcades. Rather, you look around at arcades, and can then focus on machines. Makes it seem like more of a fancy interface for your games than anything.

What they're doing with the Sound showed a bit of thought. While you're playing your game, you'll still hear the sounds from the arcade games around you.

I'm still not sure exactly how you interact with other users though.

3 bucks for each game isn't that bad. It makes no sense paying the extra 2 bucks for the PC version....well because you know. Also I hope they make it so that with each game you buy you can unlock stuff to deck out your arcade space. Building your own play space could be cool as long as its free like in Lego rockband or NFL 2k5.

But I hope it means there are some cool new arcade games put on there. 3 bucks for xmen or AVP would be awesome.

Here is the list of the 30 games for launch of the game room in spring 2010 taken from Kotaku :
Not sure if it is 100% confirm.
1. Centipede (arcade)
2. Asteroids Deluxe (arcade)
3. Tempest (arcade)
4. Crystal Castles (arcade)
5. Lunar Lander (arcade)
6. Jungler (arcade)
7. Road Fighter (arcade)
8. Scramble (arcade)
9. Finalizer (arcade)
10. Tutankham (arcade)
11. Shao-Lin's Road (arcade)
12. Super Cobra (arcade)
13. Red Baron (arcade)
14. Gravitar (arcade)
15. Battlantlis
16. Astrosmash (Intellivision)
17. Mountain Madness Super Pro Skiing (Intellivision)
18. Armor Battle (Intellivision)
19. Space Hawk (Intellivision)
20. Sub Hunt (Intellivision)
21. Sea Battle (Intellivision)
22. Space Armada (Intellivision)
23. Astrosmash (Intellivision)
24. Star Raiders (Atari 2600)
25. Outlaw (Atari 2600)
26. Yar's Revenge (Atari 2600)
27. Millipede (Atari 2600)
28. Football (Atari 2600)
29. RealSports Tennis (Atari 2600)
30. Combat (Atari 2600)

Nothing interesting for me yet.

Crystal Castles? that's a trackball game. It's going to suck on the 360. Also will suck: Centipede, Tempest, perhaps others, for same/similar reasons.

I do like some of the other titles on the list: Scramble, Tutankham, Super Cobra (if that is what I'm thinking it was - is that a Scramble-like game or am I thinking of something else?)

The Intellivision and Atari 2600 games should be $1 or free. Some of them were good games at the time, but now? $3 for Yar's Revenge?
then spend $5 in gas and drive to your local arcade to pay $0.25 for one of the 3 or 4 classic games they have
I should have clarified, pay per play gaming just winds up being more expensive in the long run. And on Microsoft's point system, I can see things getting ugly.

What do I think? I think it fucking sucks that if you already own a game that's in the game room, you have to buy it again.

Not touching this thing.

Would have been better if they didn't decide to throw so many dumb restrictions on everything. Like how many times a friend can play one of your games; or putting a limitation on what kind of rating the games should have.

... yet I'll still check it out once it finally arrives.

this is horrible I don't feel obligated to spend more money when I am already paying for xbox live. What a rip off should of been free.

The more I hear about it, the more disappointed in it I become.

At no point do you really control your Avatar and move around. Rather, the entire thing is "on rails". You zoom in and out of arcades, up floors, whatever, and your Avatar just appears there.

Any games you already own will not carry over to the Game Room. Any game you want to play in your Arcade you got to buy fresh. Until now, I was unaware you could really double-dip downloadable games...

Finally, there's no T or M-rated games.

Probably the lack of a thread shows you how much everyone's interest in this is lol. Yeah seriously having to repay for a game you already have is just moronic; this is 2010 the future damn it!

One of the main reasons I buy the dlc for Pinball FX is that with such a small amount of cash (compared to a pay as you play model) you can get a lot of enjoyment out of that little pinball game.
10 points a play and 120 points a game (to buy) would be the sweet spot.
Coming from XBLA that overcharges for Avatar T Shirts, Monopoly for $30 and 360 Classics for $15 more online than you can buy in the store? Nice dreaming.
